History:

Cancer registration in Louisiana began in 1947 at the Charity Hospital Tumor Registry in New Orleans. In 1974, as part of its Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program, the National Cancer Institute provided funds for a population-based cancer incidence and survival registry covering Jefferson, Orleans, and St. Bernard parishes. Data regarding an individual's ability, or the ability of members of a household to speak English, primary language spoken at home, educational attainment, and the level of literacy proficiency should be taken into consideration when designing and implementing policies regarding health care initiatives and the publication of health care information. This report highlights data collected from three sources: 1) The National Adult Literacy Survey; 2) The 1990 Federal Census; and 3) The Massachusetts Institute for Social and Economic Research.

Enhanced long chain fatty acid synthesis may occur in breast cancer, where it is necessary for tumor growth and predicts a poor prognosis. “Spot 14” (S14) is a carbohydrate- and thyroid hormone-inducible nuclear protein specific to liver, adipose, and lactating mammary tissues that functions to activate genes encoding the enzymes of fatty acid synthesis. Amplification of chromosome region 11q13, where the S14 gene (THRSP) resides, also predicts a poor prognosis in breast tumors. We localized the S14 gene between markers D11S906 and D11S937, at the telomeric end of the amplified region at 11q13, and found that it was …

Lautropia mirabilis, a pleomorphic, motile, gram-negative coccus, has been isolated from the oral cavities of 32 of 60 (53.3%) children infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and 3 of 25 (12.0%) HIV-uninfected controls; the association of L. mirabilis isolation with HIV infection is significant (P < 0.001). All children in the study, both HIV-infected children and controls, were born to HIV-infected mothers. The presence of this bacterium was not associated with clinical disease in these children. The HIV-infected children with L. mirabilis did not differ from the HIV-infected children without L. mirabilis in immunological status, clinical status, or systemic medications. The role of HIV infection itself or concomitant factors in the establishment of L. mirabilis in the oral cavity remains to be elucidated.

Coronavirus-like particles were observed by transmission electron microscopy in smooth-walled vesicles of Golgi, or endoplasmic reticulum (ER) in a primary Kupffer cell culture. The culture came from a clinically normal 10-day-old pig, from a swine herd that was known to be infected with porcine respiratory coronavirus (PRCV) and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV). Budding profiles of virions were observed in the smooth-walled vesicles and later, apparently free viruses accumulated in the collecting vesicles. The virions were enveloped and pleomorphic, with a diameter of 50-100 nm. The virus particles contained an external envelope and an inner membrane and a …

Lazarus' Stress and Coping Theory was used to examine the relationship between hardiness, social support, and nurses’ appraisal of stress as a threat or challenge. This descriptive correlational design used a convenience sample of 40 registered nurses on orientation at a large West Michigan hospital.

Hardiness and social support were dichotomized by splitting them at the median. The proportion of the sample viewing orientation as a challenge versus threat was not significantly different regardless of their hardiness or social support status. The results were limited by lack of variation in stress appraisal (77% challenge) and hardiness levels, sample size, and …

In the early days of the United States, care of the disabled elderly outside the home meant the public almshouse. By the 1920s, private, nonprofit homes for the aged were prevalent. More recently, private, for-profit facilities have grown to dominate the field.

For-profit ownership has been controversial. Underlying the controversy is the concern that quality might be lowered in order to enhance profit.

Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) have been shown to induce bone formation in ectopic and orthotopic sites. This inductive capability has led to their evaluation as possible adjuncts in periodontal reconstructive therapy. Indeed, studies have reported periodontal regeneration following surgical implantation of recombinant human BMP-2. This study evaluated regeneration of alveolar bone and cementum following periodontal reconstructive surgery including implantation of a construct consisting of sterile lyophilized rhBMP-2 in buffer adsorbed onto an absorbable collagen sponge. ความเหมือนและความแตกต่างของจำนวนโครโมโซฒที่พบในสัตว์ป่าบางชนิดของประเทศไทย, วิวัฒน์ ชวนะนิกุล

จำนวนโครโมโซมของสัตว์ป่าบางชนิดที่พบในประเทศไทยได้ถูกประมวลไว้ ในสัตว์ตระกูลแมว-เสือ (Family Felidae) ทั้งสกุล Felis และสกุล Panthera พบว่ามีจำนวนโครโมโซมเท่ากันหมด คือ 38 ตัว เช่น เดียวกับในแมวบ้าน ในทางตรงกันข้าม ในสัตว์ตระกูลกวาง (Family Cervidae) พบความแตกต่างของ จำนวนและรูปแบบของโครโมโซมค่อนข้างมาก จากจำนวน 6-7 ตัวในเก๋งธรรมดา (M. muntjac) และ 13-14 ตัวในเก้งหม้อ (M. feae) จนถึง 58 ตัวในละมั่ง (C. eldi) และ 68 ตัวในเนื้อทราย (C. porcinus) ในสัตว์ป่า ตระกูลจระเข้ (Family Crocodylidae) แม้ว่าจำนวนโครโมโซมของจระเข้พันธุ์น้ำจืดซึ่งมี 30 ตัว จะไม่ เท่ากับพันธุ์น้ำเค็มซึ่งมี 34 ตัว ลูกผสมที่เกิดจากการผสมข้ามพันธุ์ก็ไม่เป็นหมัน แต่มีจำนวนโครโมโซมแตก ต่างกัน คือ 31 ตัว 32 ตัวและ 33 ตัวขึ้นกับชนิดการผสมพันธุ์ จากผลของรายงานดังกล่าว การค้นคว้าในทางลึก เช่น ด้านอณูพันธุศาสตร์และพันธุกรรมการสืบพันธุ์ การสำรวจเพิ่มเติมและการนำมาประยุกต์ในการเลี้ยงจริง น่าจะได้มีการศึกษากันต่อไป เพื่อจะได้ทราบขบวนการที่เกิดขึ้นจริง และเพื่อกำหนดทิศทางที่ถูกต้องในการ รักษาพันธุกรรมเดิมไว้ประการหนึ่งและในการเลี้ยงในเชิงเศรษฐกิจอีกประการหนึ่ง

การปฏิสนธินอกร่างกายของโอโอไซต์เก็บจากลูกโคก่อนวัยเจริญพันธุ์, รังสี อดุลยานุภาพ, มงคล เตชะกำพุ, วันเพ็ญ อดุยานุภาพ

เก็บโอโอไซต์จากรังไข่ของลูกโคพื้นเมืองอายุ 4-6 เดือน ที่กระตุ้นด้วยฟอลลิเคิล สติมูเรตติ้ง ฮอร์โมน (เอฟ เอส เอช) แบ่งโอโอไซต์ออกได้เป็น 2 ชนิด คือโอโอไซต์ที่เจริญพร้อมปฏิสนธิ (mature oocyte) และ โอโอไซต์ที่เจริญไม่พร้อมปฏิสนธิ (immature oocyte) นำไปเพาะเลี้ยงเพื่อให้เกิดสภาวะพร้อมปฏิสนธิใน น้ำยาเพาะเลี้ยงชนิด TCM-199 ที่ประกอบด้วย FSH/LH (10 ug/ml), Estradiol-17 (1 ug/ml) และ 10% FCS โดยเลี้ยงร่วมกับเซลล์กรานูโลซานาน 4 ชม. สำหรับโอโอไซต์ชนิด mature และ 24 ชม. สำหรับโอโอไซต์ชนิด immature จากการสุ่มตัวอย่างโอโอไซต์ทั้ง 2 ชนิดมาตรวจดูสภาวะพร้อมปฏิสนธิ พบว่ามีอัตราการเกิดระยะ เมตาเฟส II เฉลี่ยเท่ากับ 73.6% (67/91) ซึ่งโอโอไซต์ทั้ง 2 ชนิด มีอัตราการเกิดสภาวะพร้อมปฏิสนธิ ไม่แตกต่างกัน (73.6% และ 73.5%) ตามลำดับ นำโอโอไซต์ส่วนที่เหลือไปปฏิสนธินอกร่างกายกับตัวอสุจิที่ ผ่านกระบวนการคาร์ปาซิเตชั่น จากนั้นเลี้ยงตัวอ่อนที่ได้ในน้ำยาเพาะเลี้ยงชนิด B ที่เติม 10% FCS ที่อุณหภูมิ 39° ซ และ 5% คาร์บอนไดออกไซด์ ในบรรยากาศ โดยเลี้ยงร่วมกับเซลล์ท่อนำไข่โค พบว่าได้อัตราการแบ่ง ตัวเฉลี่ยเท่ากับ 32.9%(114/346) ที่ 48 ชม. โดยไม่มีความแตกต่างระหว่างโอโอไซต์ชนิด mature และ โอโอไซต์ชนิด immature เฉลี่ยเท่ากับ 35.4% และ 32.2% ตามลำดับ จากผลการศึกษาแสดงให้เห็นว่า โอโอไซต์ที่ได้จากลูกโคสามารถเกิดการปฏิสนธินอกร่างกายและเจริญเป็นตัวอ่อนได้หลังการผสม 48 ชม.

The efficacy of Ivomec-F was evaluated in 60 cattle and 14 buffaloes that had a naturally acquired infection of Fasciola gigantica. Some animals were also concurrently infected with gastrointestinal nematodes. The animals were divided equally into treatment and control groups. Treatment group 1 which consisted of 30 cattle, were administered a single subcutaneous dose of Ivomec-F (1% ivermectin /10% clorsulon) 1 ml/ 50 kg body weight. Although cholera is an endemic disease in Bangladesh, India and other countries, it was never a significant cause of gastroenteritis in Pakistan before 1988. Since then, cases of cholera are identified each year, both in adults and children in Pakistan. In order to see the contribution of Vibrio cholerae as a cause of gastroenteritis in children, we reviewed the cases of cholera admitted in the pediatric ward of the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan. The California, coastal school district where this pilot study took place, needed to develop an orientation program for newly hired school nurses. The purpose of the project was to ascertain confidence levels of novice school nurses in performing their new role as compared to experienced nurses. Testicular cancer remains the number one cancer for men age 15 through 35. Early detection is essential to decrease morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this study was to identify and describe the extent to which California nurse practitioners screen for testicular cancer and the frequency of teaching testicular self-examination to patients. The study surveyed 425 adult or family nurse practitioners, currently practicing in the state of California, with a patient population that includes males age 15-35. The study supported the previous findings of Sladden and Dickinson (1995). Nurse practitioners do believe that testicular self-examination is an effective screening method …

Parent-teen communication about sexual topics was examined in 666 mother-teen and 510 father-teen pairs. Parents and their 8th- through 12th-grade children completed parallel surveys that assessed demographic, relationship, and attitudinal variables hypothesized to be linked to sexual communication. Logistic regression analyses were used to determine which variables were linked to teens’ reports of “one good talk” about each of three sexual topics (whether teen sex is okay, the dangers of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, and birth control) in the past year. Aside from gender of parents and teens, demographic variables were largely nonsignificant in the final models. Instead, …

A snare assembly includes an outer, flexible sheath having a distal opening and a loop received for relative sliding movement with respect to the sheath. The loop has a proximal end and a distal end. The loop is formed from a resilient wire and includes a substantially 180° reverse bend at a midpoint forming the distal end and the ends of the wire are fastened together at the proximal end. “Other Teens Drink, But Not My Kid”: Does Parental Awareness Of Adolescent Alcohol Use Protect Adolescents From Risky Consequences?, Karen Bogenschneider, Ming-Yeh Wu, Marcela Raffaelli, Jenner C. Tsay

This study included 199 White mother-adolescent dyads and 144 White father-adolescent dyads. All adolescents reported regular alcohol use, yet less than one third of parents were aware of their adolescents’ drinking. Parental awareness of adolescent alcohol use served to protect adolescents by moderating the relation of parents’ responsiveness to episodes of drinking and driving. Aware parents were more likely than unaware parents to believe their adolescents’ close friends drank alcohol. Aware mothers worried more about their adolescents’ risk behaviors and discussed them more frequently with their adolescents. Aware fathers held values less disapproving of adolescent alcohol use and were less …
