Obesity is a critical public health problem because of its prevalence, medical and psychosocial effects, and resistance to intervention. Weight loss in overweight individuals has been encouraged by the United States Public Health Service and by the medical community as a means for improving health. However, recent studies have suggested either positive or negative effects of weight loss on survival. It is possible that physical fitness may have a confounding effect, or be an effect modifier on survival in weight loss studies.

The purpose of this study was to determine if a patient’s discharge destination could be predicted by information available upon the physical therapy initial evaluation using the Physical Assessment Key (PAK). There were 141 subjects (58 male, 83 female) included in this study and their ages ranged from 19 to 89 years (mean age=57.1 years). Each subject was given a PAK score on the day of the initial physical therapy evaluation and on the day of discharge from the hospital. Mineral Trioxide Aggregates (MTA) was recently developed at Loma Linda University. It has been shown to possess good sealing ability when tested with dye, bacteria, and a fluid filtration technique.

Endotoxin is a component of the cell wall of Gram negative bacteria. It has been proposed that it may play a role in the pathogenesis of periradicular lesions. Previous studies have demonstrated that MTA can prevent the leakage of bacteria. However, the bacterial products were not tested during these studies.

This study used endotoxin to compare the sealing ability of SuperEBA, IRM, amalgam, and MTA.

Enamel demineralization due to increased plaque accumulation is a well-recognized problem associated with fixed orthodontic appliances. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a proprietary product to be marketed by 3M Unitek for the reduction of plaque accumulation and thereby reduce enamel demineralization.

Sixty four bovine teeth were divided equally into an untreated control group and a group treated with the proprietary sealant product. The efficacy of radiotherapy for cancer is limited by the dose that can be safely delivered to the tumor without causing debilitating side effects. In addition, successful treatment of highly malignant tumors such as glioblastomas is likely to require adjunctive therapies to enhance tumor response to radiation. The purpose of this study was to determine whether women with breast cancer and the presence of the drug tamoxifen, are more severely depressed than women with breast cancer and the absence of tamoxifen. Average Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) scores did not differ between the two sub-groups; however, two significant group differences were found. First, 10 women in the tamoxifen group had scores of zero (versus 4 in the absence of prescribed tamoxifen group). Treatment with fixed orthodontic appliances can change the environment in the oral cavity by creating stagnant areas that facilitate bacterial colonization and substance retention. The purpose of this study was to examine in vitro plaque formation associated with bonded orthodontic appliances and how this could affect bonding strengths.

Postural instability is one of the most debilitating symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and the best clinical prognostic indicator of progressive disease. Significant differences in neuropathology, neurochemistry, response to L-dopa therapy and stereotactic surgery as well as prognosis have been identified in subtypes when patients with predominant postural instability and gait difficulty (PIGD)/Type B were differentiated from those with predominant symptoms of tremor and rigidity/Type A. Postural instability is resistant to the therapeutic effects of L-dopa, despite its continued efficacy on other Parkinson’s symptomatology, implicating the nondopaminergic mechanism of postural instability in Parkinson’s disease. Postoperative Nursing Care Contributions To Symptom Distress And Functional Status After Ambulatory Surgery, Beth Ann Swan

The relationship of postoperative patient-perceived nurse caring behaviors to symptom distress and functional status in 100 adult ambulatory surgical patients was examined. These behaviors explained 9.3% to 18.2% of the variance in functional status on the 1st, 4th, and 7th day postsurgery, and 10% of the variance in symptom distress on the 7th postoperative day after controlling for ASA physical status classification, preoperative symptom distress, and preoperative functional status.

Clinical presentation, radiologic and endoscopic examination provide clues to the diagnosis. Renal disease and diabetes lead to dysautonomia resulting in consequences ranging from gastroparesis to sudden death. New technologies to detect dysautonomia, such as 24-hr heart rate variability, are being evaluated and compared to traditional evoked tests. These advances have, however, lead to a lack of standardization in testing batteries, procedures, and reporting formats. This series of 3 studies psychometrically assessed measures of autonomic function (AF) and explored relationships among objective and subjective measures in healthy adults and uremic patients. Minimal research has addressed effects of postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on heart rate variability (HRV), a measure of cardiovascular autonomic balance and a predictor of cardiac morbidity/mortality. Using an exploratory, pre-test/post-test design to describe HRV in postmenopausal women (PMW) before/after six weeks of HRT, twenty-four Black (n=15) and White (n=9) women, (mean age=55±4 years), were recruited from two primary care clinics (n=20) and one church population (n=4) in a large urban midsouth community. Primates can act as reservoirs for human pathogens. Objective: To develop and test a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) for use in rural areas of Kerala, India. Design: Based on food use and market surveys of the study area, a quantitative 81- item interviewer-administered FFQ was developed. A validation study was conducted consisting of 24-h diet recalls (24HR) administered on 8 days randomly selected over an entire year and two administrations of the FFQ, one at the beginning of the l-year period and the other at the end. Idiopathic scoliosis is more frequently found in early adolescence. To prevent possible deterioration and thus, inevitable surgery, early diagnosis and treatment are strongly considered. Screening school children for scoliosis has been very popular in developed countries. The purpose of this study is to find (1) the best age to start screening and (2) the best way to screen. Using the forward bending test, one experienced physiatrist observed the backs of 5185 students from TaipeiMunicipal Dun-Hwa Primary School, which included 2618 boys and 2567 girls. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing is a powerful non-invasive mean for objectively assessing the exercise response of patients with cardiovascular or respiratory disease. The ventilatory equivalent for CO2(V E/V CO2)derived from gas exchange analysis is considered to be an estimate of dead space ventilation and provides an assessment of the efficiency of minute ventilation during exercise. Clark and associates showed that the V E/V CO2 ratio differentiated patients into subgroups in terms of the severity of congestive heart failure by measuring the maximal oxygen consumption and theduration of exercise time. This study tested if reminiscence therapy would improve client satisfaction with nursing care. An experimental post test only design was used on 39 clients in a moderate sized home care agency in the Midwest. Ages ranged from 65 to 98. A single, one-on-one reminiscence session was done with 22 subjects in their homes after a routine nursing visit. The control group subjects did not receive the reminiscence intervention. The groups were homogeneous except for the number of hospitalizations experienced in the past year. The control group had a significantly higher number.

There are several variations of nerve communications between the ulnar and the median nerves in the hand, which are referred as the Riche-Cannieu anastomoses. The anatomic and clinical significances of these anastomoses have not been clarified. Because of these variations, electric stimulation may travel from the ulnar nerve, through the communications, to the median nerve impulse and thus induces the contraction of thenar muscles. Drooling is a common problem among children with a neurological deficit. To establish the incidence of drooling and to determine the factors related to drooling in a population of the children with a neurological deficit, seventy-two children of Chang Gung Children Hospital were analyzed, prospectively. They were aged from 2 to 8 years. Exercise training, especially aerobic exercise, is beneficial to one's health. This is also true for end-stage renal failure patients. However, exercise programs prescribed on non-dialysis days are not usually carried out by the patients, which can decrease the expected effectiveness of exercise training.We present an uremic patient who first underwent a 3 month non-exercise control period, then immediately followed by another 3 months of exercise training during hemodialysis, with a stationary bike. We found the patient's compliance rate for exercise training was 94% (34/36). His maximal oxygen consumption increased by 37.8%, and he was able to discontinue his anti-hypertensive agents …
