In Study 1,we explored whether guns presented for target shooting would lead subjects to assign longer prison sentences for crimes unrelated to the guns. Weapon-condition subjects recommended longer sentences than did control subjects, who had experienced equally energizing sports activities. In Study 2, subjects acting as jurors watched a police officer’s videotaped deposition about a burglary arrest. Through the deposition, subjects in all conditions received identical information about the gun. While functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is now used widely for demonstrating neural activity-related signals associated with perceptual, motor, and cognitive processes in humans, to date this technique has not been developed for use with nonhuman primates. fMRI in monkeys offers a potentially valuable experimental approach for investigating brain function, which will complement and aid existing techniques such as electrophysiology and the behavioral analysis of the effects of brain lesions. The purposes of this study were to determine if posttraumatic stress (PTS), depression, and anxiety occurred in a community sample of Vietnamese and Hmong mothers and to describe relationships between PTS, depression, anxiety, acculturation and maternal sensitivity. Transition theory (Bridges, 1980), and a conceptual model of parenting in immigrant populations building on Belsky's (1984) work, provided the theoretical framework (Foss, 1996). The sample was divided evenly between Vietnamese and Hmong participants. Ages ranged from 17–43 years, time lived in the United States ranged from 3–21 years, and education ranged from no formal education to completion of college. Maternal sensitivity was …

In reading and contemplating Yenca's (1998) article, I was immediately struck by the utility of the ideas she offers on a number of clinical fronts. We are presented with occupation-based strategies that are directly applicable to our work with patients and program development; we can make use of the language and ideas that are offered as a way to begin talking to one another (therapist to therapist) in clinical settings about occupation; and we are given the opportunity to think about the contribution, value, and efficacy of occupation and how we might convert those ideas into clinically based research actions. …

This study analyzed the grip and pinch strength of children aged 7 to 12 years old in order to establish the relationship between hand strength and anthropometric factors. Two hundred and two children in primary school were divided into three groups based on age, with group A aged 7 to 8 years, group B aged 9 to 10 years, and group C aged 11 to 12 years old. A Jamar dynamometer was used to measure subjects’ grip strength, and a B&L pinch gauge was used to measure their tip, palmar, chuck, and key pinch strength.Significant differences were found between left …

Two hundred and one stroke patients who were admitted to the Rehabilitation Department of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Linkou, from April 1995 to March 1996 were evaluated by the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) in order to analyze the influence of age on stroke outcome. It is well established that repeated, high doses of 3, 4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) result in the long-term depletion of serotonin levels and destruction of serotonergic terminals in various locations in the brains of a variety of species. Further, it is also well known that concomitant injections of the serotonin reuptake inhibitor, fluoxetine, prevents this deterioration. It has recently been noted that such MDMA neurotoxicity disrupts stimulus control in rats trained to discriminate MDMA from saline in a drug discrimination procedure (Schechter, 1991a).

Developmental Expression Of Rat Target Of The Antiproliferative Antibody (Rtapa) Protein In The Brain, Clyde Dale Sullivan

The present study defines the expression pattern of rTAPA (CD81) in the developing rat brain. rTAPA is a member of the tetramembrane spanning family of proteins, and like other members of this family, appears to be associated with the stabilization of cellular contacts. On immunoblots of the brain, rTAPA is present in higher levels than any other tissue examined: muscle, tendon, peripheral nerve, cartilage, liver, kidney, skin, and testicle. Immunohistochemical methods were used to define the distribution of rTAPA in the brain. This protein is expressed by ependyma, choroid plexus, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes, and rTAPA is dramatically upregulated at the …
