Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) is a rare complication of hyperthyroidism, marked by episodes of muscle weakness and hypokalaemia. Although it predominantly affects young Asian men, it can also occur in females and individuals from non-Asian ethnic groups. TPP is a treatable form of hypokalaemic periodic paralysis and can often be the first indication of thyrotoxicosis. Triggers such as a high-carbohydrate diet, strenuous exercise, emotional stress, and steroid use can provoke TPP attacks. During an acute episode, the key diagnostic indicators are hypokalaemia along with elevated levels of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Treatment consists of two phases: promptly correcting hypokalaemia …

Cooper Rowan Medical Journal
Introduction: Post-surgical inflammation is a common adverse event that can have detrimental effects on the recovery phase for patients. Commonly associated with pain severity, inflammation can make the management of postoperative pain difficult. Of the multiple inflammatory molecules that can be found in an inflammatory response, interleukin 6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP) are two of the most commonly assayed biomarkers of inflammation. Dexamethasone (DEX), with its anti-inflammatory properties, is thought to reduce IL-6 and CRP. It thus may reduce pain when administered perioperatively. In this review, we assessed the anti-inflammatory effects of DEX and the relationship of such …

Millions of Americans live in hospital deserts—communities where people lack geographic access to hospitals and primary care physicians. People living in these deserts often miss doctor appointments, delay necessary care, and stop adhering to their treatment. In this way, hospital deserts exacerbate the health disparities plaguing America. This Article demonstrates that hospital deserts are not inevitable but the result of several business strategies—including noncompete agreements and merging with competitors—and antitrust enforcers’ unwillingness to recognize these harmful practices as antitrust violations. To cure the issue of hospital deserts, this Article makes three proposals. First, antitrust enforcers and the courts should expand …
