Background: This brief report presents data characterizing air quality throughout the New Orleans area in the hours before, during and after the Carson Six fire in DeSoto National Park, Mississippi (October 2024). Fine, respirable particulate matter (PM2.5) is the air pollutant of greatest concern to public health from wildfire smoke as it can travel deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, where it can have a detrimental effect on the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Background: Smoking has been associated with negative cardiovascular health outcomes. We analyzed data from The Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study to investigate whether certain biomarkers collected were related to both cardiovascular disease (CVD) occurrence and cigarette or ecigarette use. Methods: A total of 6,473 participants were grouped into cigarette users, e-cigarette users, and non-users. Among them, 6,020 (93%) developed CVD and 453 (7%) did not over PATH Study Waves 1 to 5. All participants were adults, had valid tobaccouse and biomarker data, and no pre-existing CVD prior to Wave 1. We conducted mediation analysis using nonlinear multiple …

Background: As of December 2023, there were roughly 28,000 people held in state custody in Louisiana. Prior research and litigation have documented challenges with healthcare service delivery within prisons, but less is known about the higher acuity care incarcerated people receive at state-contracted hospitals. Methods: Between November 2020 and January 2021, authors conducted semi-structured interviews with a convenience sample of Louisiana healthcare professionals about their experiences of providing incarcerated people care at hospitals. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Authors used applied thematic analysis techniques to synthesize qualitative data and identify themes. The impact of music on subjective reporting of pain and anxiety has been increasingly described in medical literature. Multimodal methods of alleviating postoperative pain and anxiety, including the use of live or recorded music in perioperative settings, have been shown to improve patient-reported pain levels and, in some studies, to result in decreased opioid usage. The overprescription of opioids after surgery can contribute to long-term abuse or trafficking of medications, and the use of non-opioid medications, alternative methods of pain relief, and environmental/auditory stimuli offer new mechanisms to promote safe opioid prescribing while improving both pain control and patient wellbeing. …

Introduction:

Myocardial infarction (MI) is one of the leading causes of mortality in Saudi Arabia, with individuals sharing genetic, lifestyle, and environmental risk factors. The present investigation aimed to review the literature on genetic susceptibility to MI among Saudi individuals, with a specific emphasis on genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for coronary artery disease (CAD) and MI. Studies have revealed the relationship between polymorphisms in genes such as proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9), cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP), and cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2B antisense RNA 1 (CDKN2B-AS1), which are involved in lipid metabolism, inflammation, and endothelial function.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of aging on inhibitory control from the prefrontal cortex (PFC) to the motor cortices and inter-limb coordination during dual task standing. Participants performed single-task and dual-task standing. Ground reaction force, center-of-pressure, muscle activity, and cortical activation were measured. The older group showed a greater effective connectivity index from the intra-hemispheric dorsolateral PFC (DLPFC) to supplementary motor area (SMA) (right, p = 0.009; left, p = 0.003) and left DLPFC to right M1 (p = 0.020)than the young group across task conditions. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a significant public health concern globally and in Owerri, southeast Nigeria. The deleterious effects of diabetes have been linked to poor glycemic control. Background: Type one Diabetes Mellitus-(T1DM) can be accompanied with cognitive impairments due to dysglycemic states including hyperglycemia, hypoglycemic states, and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). This study evaluates cognitive functions in children with T1DM and examines the impact of factors associated with diabetes. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 100 children with T1DM (6–14 years) and 100 agematched non-diabetic controls at the National Institute for Diabetes and Endocrinology, Cairo. Cognitive function was assessed using the Arabic Stanford–Binet Intelligence Scale. Glycemic control (HbA1C ≥ 7%) and DKA history were analyzed. This study aims to evaluate the influence of compensation, including wages, incentives, and benefits, on the performance of health workers in primary health centers and hospitals. A literature review was conducted using Google Scholar and PubMed, focusing on articles published in the last 5–10 years. From an initial search yielding 1,021 articles, nine were selected based on inclusion criteria. The results show that direct compensation (salary) and indirect compensation (benefits) have a positive impact on health worker performance. Background: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is an alternative treatment for surgically high-risk patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS). This study aimed to assess the echocardiographic outcomes of TAVI in patients with severe AS, focusing on left ventricular mass, volume, and pressure.

Methods: This retrospective,registry-based, single-center study was conducted at King Salman Heart Center, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Aim: To evaluate the relationship between the location of chest pain (topography) and the site of coronary artery involvement in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) undergoing percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA).

Materials and Methods: This prospective, observational study included 411 consecutive ACS patients admitted to a tertiary care center between January 2017 and December 2019. A total of 589 angina topographic sites were analyzed. Objectives: Diagnosing hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) can be challenging due to its nonspecific clinical manifestations, variability in electrocardiographic (ECG) patterns, and limited access to echocardiography, the gold standard for diagnosis, often leading to delayed detection. Recent artificial intelligence (AI) advancements have enabled ECG-based algorithms to improve HCM detection. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to assess the overall diagnostic performance of AI-enhanced ECG in identifying HCM.

Promoting Parent-Child Connectedness: Insights From A Parent Education Training, Bisola E. Duyile, Robyn Becker, Kate Papas, Shanta Pamphile

Purpose: This study explores the interrelationship of speech, language, and literacy development, parent-child connectedness, and children’s mental health when viewed as social determinants of health, specifically among families of children with developmental disabilities. Through interprofessional collaboration, researchers aim to identify effective strategies that parents can use to enhance their children’s communication skills and emotional well-being.

Methods: A mixed methods design was employed, involving a post-workshop survey completed by five mothers. The quantitative component included Likert scale items to measure satisfaction with social support. We also evaluated satisfaction with the workshop.
