Mechanisms Controlling The Peripheral Circulation Of The Lung With Some Clinical Correlations, Vernon E. Krahl

Supported by experimental evidence, I have presented the thesis that there is a stasis of blood in alveolar capillaries caused by a generalized constriction of precapillary arteriolar sphincters produced by vagal hyperactivity. This, alone, can be held accountable for every clinical and histopathological feature of the syndrome. Evidence adduced from my own and other studies supports the idea of vagal predominance in PHS. A rational basis for a simple and, hopefully, a generally successful treatment of PHS by anti-vagal agents such as atropine has been outlined.

In previous work with rabbits on high-cholesterol and on high-cholesterol plus triparanol diets, I observed that no offspring were produced, even though the animals were not carefully separated by sex. Consequently, it seemed advisable, as the main purpose, to reexamine the possibility that a diet high in cholesterol, with or without triparanol, might affect reproduction. In this study rats were used instead of rabbits. Since triparanol inhibits the conversion of desmosterol to cholesterol, it seemed advisable to study the effect of triparanol on blood and tissue cholesterol itself. Recent Advances In Pediatric Allergy, F. Stanford Massie

Evidence has been presented to indicate that atopic disease is not limited to man but occurs in subhuman primates. The genetic transmission of allergy may relate to altered membrane permeability or an enzymatic defect, with inability to handle certain N-glycosidic protein-sugar linkages occurring in the atopens of nature. The suggestion that an infectious agent transmits allergic disease has been examined. Finally, in vitro and animal experimental models of anaphylaxis closely akin to atopy and the effects of manipulation of the autonomic nervous system in laboratory animals and man have been discussed.

Hematopoietic Colony Forming Cells Of Spleen, Y. Maruyama, J. G. Eichten

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

It was found that isologous spleen cells injected into heavily irradiated recipients produced spleen nodules. The number of nodules or colony-farming-units (CFU) varied with cell dose, and were presumably clonal descendants of a single progenitor cell. The properties of the spleen and bone marrow CFU were compared and it was found that although present in greatly differing concentration, the radiation response and morphological features were similar.

In any event, all abortion laws--especially the newer laws--are rather elastic. I presume that they will be applied rigidly or leniently depending upon the attitude of the physician. Given a liberal attitude, I suppose the deciding factor would be whether the woman concerned wishes to have the baby or prefers to terminate the pregnancy. I have a feeling that any woman in the United States today who takes the latter attitude will have an abortion, therapeutic or non-therapeutic, medical or lay. In the long run, legislation against abortions is like any legislation against sin; it is commendable but ineffectual.

The experimental results in guinea pigs confirm Raekallio's findings. It is clear from the results that the enzyme reactions are the earliest detectable changes in the healing wounds. The non-specific esterase gives earlier staining reaction than any other enzyme studied so far. It is quite possible that a study of other enzymes may reveal even earlier detectable reactions.

In this paper I will try to show how the proposed intrinsic dilator mechanism may, with due allowance for a variety of modifying factors, underlie the dilator phases of reactive hyperemia, post-exercise hyperemia, hyperemia due to local warmth, autoregulation, vasomotion, inflammation, and shock. These ideas are based on histamine studies (Schayer, 1962, 1963, 1966). However since there is much misunderstanding about histamine, and since the theory can be largely developed without need to identify the dilator, this paper will be presented in two parts. 5-Flourouracil, A Tool In The Treatment Of Skin Cancer And Keratoses, Reuven K. Snyderman

20% 5-Fluorouracil ointment in an acid mantle cream base is a useful tool for the treatment of multiple basal cell carcinomas and keratoses. The method of treatment to date is application twice a day for a period of 30 days. A second course of treatment can be applied to the same area or other areas. A more severe reaction occurs with the second and third course of treatment. The treatment removes the lesions which are present but in no way alters the skin, and those disposed to develop new lesions will probably continue to do so in the future.

Focal glomerulonephritis is a form of glomerulonephritis in which only a certain number of glomeruli show lesions, the others being normal. It is a feature of most cases that the glomeruli affected show an involvement of only a portion of the tuft, a change that will be referred to as a local lesion. In general, focal glomerulonephritis can occur as a manifestation of well-recognized entities such as systemic lupus erythematosus, polyarteritis nodosa, subacute bacterial endocarditis, or Schönlein-Henoch syndrome; it can also occur apart from these diseases with a variety of clinical pictures (Heptinstall and Joekes, 1961).
