During the period from June, 1966, to September, 1967, 27 amphibians of two species, 446 reptiles of eight species, 561 birds of 81 species, and 4050 mammals of 26 species were examined for ectoparasites at the National Reactor Testing Station in southern Idaho. Of seven species of ticks collected, the predominant one was Ixodes kingi, found on mammals of 12 species. Next in abundance was Dermacentor andersoni found on birds of three species and mammals of 16 species. Haemaphysalis leporispalustris was taken from birds of 10 species and six spvecies of mammals. This interesting case report comes from an alumnus of Henry Ford Hospital - Dr. Carlos Petrozzi who was a medical resident here from July 1961 to 1964. The findings may be of interest to opththalmologists and others because of the rather specific changes in the bulbar conjunctiva which can be easily seen without special ophthalmic instruments.

Experience with radioisotope therapy at Henry Ford Hospital is reviewed here through critical analysis of results with 105 patients having recurrent malignant effusions. Classically, Howship's lacunae and osteoid seams or tissue have been used for microscopic identification of sites of bone osteoclastic and osteoblastic cell activity respectively. Recent transmitted light and blue light fluorescence microscopic study of fresh, undemineralized, specially stained and tetracycline labeled bone specimens have supported this use of these parameters of bone resorption and formation. Reports that the osteoclast is not required for bone resorption are evaluated here; it is concluded that no evidence exsists for resorption of bone tissue without osteoclasts. This does not apply to the perilacunar phenomena observed in certain well-defined situations.

The Edsel B. Ford Memorial Lectures, which are sponsored jointly by the Edsel B. Ford Institute for Medical Research and the Henry Ford Hospital, have been held annually since 1952. Correlation Of The Transverse Sizes Of 6th And 11th Ribs In Normal And Osteoporotic Individuals, F. Santoro, H. M. Frost

In a continuing study of bone biodynamics, established values for the 6th rib are used to predict the parameters of the 11th rib. Autopsy samples of the 6th and 11th rib are compared and the correlation is used to validate studies of the 11th rib in osteoporosis showing normal cross sectional area with enlarged marrow cavity. The values presented are considered provisional until larger numbers of patients are studied.

The cerebellopontile angle and the vascular supply of the adjacent brain stem and cerebellum are susceptible to compression and damage by tumor and may be injured, directly or indirectly, during surgery. Awareness of the normal anatomical features of the region is valuable to the neuropathologist, the neurosurgeon and the neuro-otologist. Following is the first of a two-part presentation which describes the anatomy of the cerebellopontile angle, the vascular supply of the brain stem and its pathophysiology.

The subject of my lecture requires better definition: I shall talk about pancreatitis and, chiefly, about the diagnosis of the recurrent variety of pancreatitis. How can we recognize the pain of this disease? This pain does tend to be in the upper abdomen, more often on the left than the right, and radiates to the back in about a quarter of the cases. It has, however, no characteristic quality, and the degree of the pain may range from the relatively painless to the excruciating. Most often, its severity is between these two extremes.

The Relation Of The Intestinal Cell Surface To Vitamin B₁₂ Absorption, Robert M. Donaldson Jr.

I have tried to indicate that it is now possible to separate out events occurring at the surface of intestinal absorptive cells. Previous work has shown that intestinal brush borders contain diverse enzymatic activity and that the surface of the intestinal cell is a site for active glucose accumulation. Furthermore, brush border and microvillous membrane preparations now provide direct evidence that intrinsic factor acts at the intestinal cell surface. These studies directly support the concept that a specific receptor for the IF-B₁₂ complex is located on the surface of ileal, but not jejunal absorptive cells. Studies with antibodies against pure …

Severe parenchymatous diseases of the liver, both acute and chronic, are frequently associated with hepatic encephalopathy. This term is preferable to that of hepatic coma, as it encompasses the whole spectrum of changes from bizarre alterations of behavior to various degrees of disturbance of consciousness, as well as protean neurologic manifestations. In many instances it is a reversible phenomenon, occurring either spontaneously or as the result of various therapeutic agents. The puzzling feature of hepatic encephalopathy is the discrepancy between dramatic clinical features and paucity of histopathological changes in the brain. Potential Applications Of Lasers In Ophthalmology, Walter J. Geeraets

The continuing evaluation of laser instrumentation is of particular interest to the ophthalmologist. Several lasers now exhibit potential properties which may result in superior clinical instruments in the future. An important feature of almost all existing lasers, as related to ophthalmology, is the potential hazard of accidental exposure of the eye. This aspect of the laser is certainly as important as its clinical application, and it should be the responsibility of ophthalmologists to work actively to provide recommendations for safety standards and criteria for ocular protection in every field of laser application.
