Current Trends In College Health Medicine, Philip B. Chase Jan 1971

Current Trends In College Health Medicine, Philip B. Chase

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

All the complex factors which are bringing about changes in college education--economic, social, political, and cultural--are profoundly affecting college health medicine. These changes are occurring with unusual rapidity, and are certainly causing strains to the old establishment thought to be so secure and unassailable a few years ago. However, in the new trends--student participation in the work of the Health Service, expansion of the work of the Health Service to include the entire college community, and the coming age of the Mental Health Program--we recognize new and more effective ways to deliver health care to our college youth and their …

Evolution Of The Iguanine Lizards (Sauria, Iguanidae) As Determined By Osteological And Myological Characters, David F. Avery, Wilmer W. Tanner Jan 1971

Evolution Of The Iguanine Lizards (Sauria, Iguanidae) As Determined By Osteological And Myological Characters, David F. Avery, Wilmer W. Tanner

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

The problem of phylogenic relationships within the iguanine phyletic line and the Madagascar iguanids have been investigated in order to explain the discontinuous distribution exhibited by the members of the family Iguanidae. Owing to inconclusive results from cytology and histological methods, the comparative morphology of the anterior osteology, myology, tongues, and hemipenes were used to determine relationships.

An examination of the above structures of the members of the iguanine phyletic lines and a comparison with the Madagascar iguanids indicates the following: ( 1 ) The Madagascar genera Chalarodon and Oplurus appear to be more closely related to each other than …

The Use Of Principal Component Analysis To Increase The Ability Of Multiple Choice Examinations To Distinguish Among Students, Flora E. Roger, Walter H. Carter Jr. Jan 1971

The Use Of Principal Component Analysis To Increase The Ability Of Multiple Choice Examinations To Distinguish Among Students, Flora E. Roger, Walter H. Carter Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

A method of scoring multiple choice examinations based on the statistical technique of principal components analysis is described. This test is applied to two tests. The results indicate that the method yields test scores which have a marked advantage over the usual percentage scores in distinguishing among examinees with respect to knowledge of subject matter. In addition, the method provides an indication of whether a question is "good" or "poor" for purposes of distinguishing among examinees.

A Survey Of Laboratory Programs For First Year Medical Students, James L. Poland, Kenneth E. Guyer Jr., Hugo R. Seibel

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Basic science courses offered to freshmen medical students have been traditionally taught by didactic presentations and laboratory work. Various factors have prompted many departments to either markedly reduce the time allotted for the traditional, but more vulnerable, laboratory phase of these courses or drastically alter the content of the laboratory programs. Information concerning the desirability for such changes is incomplete and no evaluation has been developed to determine the effectiveness of change. Before beginning any further alterations in the laboratory programs at the Medical College of Virginia, it seemed desirable to determine anew what we wish to teach in the …

Neoplasms Of The Internal Auditory Canal, James R. Leonard, Marion L. Talbot Jan 1971

Neoplasms Of The Internal Auditory Canal, James R. Leonard, Marion L. Talbot

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Histopathological studies of tumors of the temporal bone are scarce. The authors examined a relatively large number of sectioned human temporal bones in search of small asymptomatic acoustic neurilemmomata and have reported the findings (Leonard and Talbot, 1970). During that search, several other neoplasms were encountered in the internal auditory canal. This report presents a clinical and pathological review of these lesions.

In childhood, prior to adolescence, vaginal bleeding is only rarely a problem. During adolescence, however, vaginal bleeding (or the lack of it) is a common complaint.

Psychological Aspects Fo The Management Of Adolescents With Malignancy, Charlene P. Holton Jan 1971

Psychological Aspects Fo The Management Of Adolescents With Malignancy, Charlene P. Holton

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The approach to total patient care in a teenager with malignant disease represents one of the greatest challenges to any physician. To bridge the generation gap and communicate in an area of medicine where we cannot always cure, but often only palliate, guide, comfort and listen, is often difficult for we physicians who are so often taught only how to win therapeutic battles. Malignancy is the leading medical cause of death in the 10-21 year age group in the United States. Leukemia, Hodgkin's disease, bone and brain tumors are the most commonly encountered forms of cancer during this period (Heald, …

Techniques Of Bedside Pacing, Leonard S. Dreifus Jan 1971

Techniques Of Bedside Pacing, Leonard S. Dreifus

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In temporary pacing the primary approach is transvenous--either percutaneous or via a cutdown in the jugular or brachial vein system. Tripolar and quadripolar pacemaker catheters which have been used for His bundle recordings are now obtainable as well as the bipolar variety. Among the latter is the floating catheter which may also be used as an intracavitary electrocardiogram. Doctor Furman of New York City has been extremely successful with this type in approximately 500 patients.

Pasture Legume Varieties And Ewe Fertility, T Marshall, H. E. Fels, H. G. Neil, R. C. Rossiter

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ALTHOUGH it was first thought that all varieties of subterranean clover would cause ewe infertility, research in the last 10 to 15 years has shown that varieties differ in potency.

The relative level of potency has also been shown to remain consistent for any one variety under normal conditions.

Infectious Sinusitis Of Turkeys, J Edgar Jan 1971

Infectious Sinusitis Of Turkeys, J Edgar

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Climatic conditions in W.A. are ideal for turkey production if advantage is taken of the wide open spaces. Over-crowded, poorly ventilated quarters are ideal for the spread of infectious sinusitis, and the disease, once established, is hard to eliminate without a complete change of birds.

This article provides advice for the prevention of this important disease at a time when turkey raising is increasing in W.A.
