Cytomegalovirus Infection Of The Eye In A Case Of Renal Homotransplantation, G. E. Madge
Cytomegalovirus Infection Of The Eye In A Case Of Renal Homotransplantation, G. E. Madge
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Ocular involvement in cytomegalic inclusion disease, a viral infection usually seen in infants, is rarely seen in adults except as a terminal infection complicating diseases such as malignant lymphoma and leukemia. In infants, chorioretinitis and the frequent finding of intracranial calcification make clinical differentiation from toxoplasmosis difficult. This report presents a case of cytomegalic inclusion disease involving the eyes of an adult who had received a renal homotransplant.
Observations Of Lens Epithelium In Cell Cultures, Walter J. Geeraets
Observations Of Lens Epithelium In Cell Cultures, Walter J. Geeraets
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The following investigation had been conducted to evaluate lens epithelial cells in vitro as a potential suitable model for future studies of chronic low dose ionizing radiation effects on this cell type in vitro. Since there is a great range of dose requirements to produce in vivo radiation cataract in man, monkeys, and rabbits, and an equally wide range in time from radiation exposure until the first minimal lens changes can be biomicroscopically detected, it may be assumed that in vitro comparison of cells derived from these three species may provide some explanation for the in vivo differences.
Genetic Counseling In Retinitis Pigmentosa, Van B. Noah
Genetic Counseling In Retinitis Pigmentosa, Van B. Noah
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
During his lifetime the practicing ophthalmologist will see more than a few retinitis pigmentosa cases. It is his responsibility not only to diagnose and prognosticate this eye disease, but also to set aside a little time in which to advise the patient and his family on its genetic aspects.
Some Common And Less Common Aspects Of Orthoptics, Elizabeth E. Porter
Some Common And Less Common Aspects Of Orthoptics, Elizabeth E. Porter
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Orthoptics (derived from the Greek word "orthos"--straight and "ops"--vision) has been in use for centuries at various stages of sophistication and has been applied to the treatment of visual anomalies not amenable to other medical approaches. However, today's orthoptic evaluation and treatment techniques date back only about 50 years, with continuous refinements in both knowledge and technical equipment. Orthoptic treatment is primarily directed towards restoring normal binocular vision; whereas, pleoptic treatment is aimed at regaining monocular vision. Thus, although the art of oprthoptics is in the final analysis an ancient one, its scientific application has been greatly enhanced and placed …
Chemical Changes In Amniotic Fluid, Ajay S. Bhatnagar
Chemical Changes In Amniotic Fluid, Ajay S. Bhatnagar
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
An ever present dilemma in modern obstetrical management is the proper timing of delivery of the fetus in situations where complications either threaten its own life in utero or significantly affect maternal morbidity. In such situations the obstetrician is confronted with the equivocal choice between premature delivery and the high risk to the fetus of continued intrauterine existence. In addition, he is placed in a unique position where any sort of direct communication with one of his "patients," namely the fetus, is nearly impossible. In the past, the delivery of obstetrical care to the fetus and the monitoring of its …
A Modification Of The Spectrophotometric Method For Determining Oxyhemoglobin Affinity, Jack D. Burke
A Modification Of The Spectrophotometric Method For Determining Oxyhemoglobin Affinity, Jack D. Burke
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The role of hemoglobin as a carrier of oxygen in the blood was established in 1859 by Hoppe-Seyler. Bert, using whole blood, furnished experimental data whereby an oxyhemoglobin affinity curve could be plotted. In 1886, C. Bohr published data on purified hemoglobin for the second curve of oxyhemoglobin affinity. By 1903, Bohr had established that the oxyhemoglobin affinity curve was S-shaped for both whole blood and hemoglobin in solution. Since that time, various methods have been reported, or modifications thereof, to estimate oxyhemoglobin affinity.
The Effect Of Electrical Curren On The Crystalline Lens, Herbert Wiesinger
The Effect Of Electrical Curren On The Crystalline Lens, Herbert Wiesinger
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
In summary, the cataractogenic properties of electric current were studies. Previous observations dealing with this subject utilized a multiple shock technique--something which is unlikely to occur in any accidental exposure. This study focused on the production of lens changes in rabbit eyes following single exposures of measured electric current.
Hormonal Changes In Pregnancy, Michael E. Yannone
Hormonal Changes In Pregnancy, Michael E. Yannone
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Because of the time factor involved, it would be an impossible task to present the vast body of biochemical information accumulated during the last decade on the endocrine aspects of pregnancy. However, certain key points can be made concerning the feto-placental unit and the hormone levels and effects in normal gestation. These concepts will be discussed not merely for their academic value, but also as a base to evaluate our present diagnostic and therapeutic endeavors in obstetrical practice. With the audience’s indulgence, an occasional personal conjecture will be interjected concerning hormonal mechanisms and clinical practices.
Postoperative Ventilatory Care, Terring W. Heironimus Iii
Postoperative Ventilatory Care, Terring W. Heironimus Iii
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Postoperative ventilatory care implies that some significant percentage of surgical patients cannot breathe adequately in the postsurgical state and need to be appropriately assisted in order to do so. It further implies that there may be some difficulty in or complication resulting from such care. Both implications are correct.
Musculoskeletal Sarcoidosis And Rheumatoid Factor, Duncan S. Owen Jr., Marion Waller, Edward S. Ray, Elam Toone
Musculoskeletal Sarcoidosis And Rheumatoid Factor, Duncan S. Owen Jr., Marion Waller, Edward S. Ray, Elam Toone
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Articular manifestations of sarcoidosis were present in 19 of our 60 patients (32%). This correlates with previously reported studies. In all of our cases but one, the articular manifestations subsided in eight weeks. This fact and the absence of hyperuricemia are in contradistinction to other studies for which we have no adequate explanation.
Our Growing Numbers, Allan C. Barnes
Our Growing Numbers, Allan C. Barnes
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
According to Dr. Barnes: There is no one problem more immediately pressing or as crucial as the questionable future of man's existence of terms of our expanding population. The stress the immediacy of the problem, Dr. Barnes vividly illustrated by statistics the magnitude of the world's population growth. The exponential curve yielded by calculations of this rate of growth leads Dr. Barnes to state, unequivocally, that "...we have about six hundred years at the present rate of growth before every man, woman, and child on this globe has one square foot in which to stand. This calculation includes the polar …
The Anesthesiologist-Anesthetist Team, Bernard A. Kuzava
The Anesthesiologist-Anesthetist Team, Bernard A. Kuzava
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
In summary, I call upon anesthesia educators to abandon technician-training programs and instead help us develop nurse anesthetist programs to a higher level nationally. Let us remove our finger from the panic button and begin working together as a team, acknowledging our shortcomings and limitations. The time for us to establish the strongest possible ties both in our educational systems and our service-oriented institutions is right now. Mutual respect and cooperation are the keys to a smooth, efficient operation of an anesthesiologist-anesthetist team. And finally, let us be certain that the next meeting with the format of "What is New …
Nitrous Oxie-Curare Anesthesia: Reappraisal, Richard L. Keenan
Nitrous Oxie-Curare Anesthesia: Reappraisal, Richard L. Keenan
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Of the many inhalation drugs available today, nitrous oxide is the only one which is both non-explosive and non-toxic. Although the compound is rarely listed as a primary agent, it is used on almost every patient. The usefulness of nitrous oxide tends to be dismissed because it is considered to be relatively weak. However, with the continuing trend toward lighter anesthesia seen during the past quarter century, this viewpoint is no longer reasonable. The fact that MAC for halothane can be reduced to one third by the addition of 70% nitrous oxide attests to the drug's potency.
Pulmonary Function Testing For Preoperative Study Of Patients For Anesthesia And Surgery, Orhan Muren
Pulmonary Function Testing For Preoperative Study Of Patients For Anesthesia And Surgery, Orhan Muren
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
In conclusion, if history and physical examination indicate pulmonary dysfunction, simple pulmonary function tests should be obtained and proper measures taken to reduce morbidity and mortality in surgery patients, especially those with underlying chronic lung disease.

The Chronically Ill Child: A Challenge To Family Adaptation, Ake Mattsson
The Chronically Ill Child: A Challenge To Family Adaptation, Ake Mattsson
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
In conclusion, by studying the emotional stress and the coping behavior of children with chronic physical illness, we can learn considerably about how these patients and their families learned to "play a poor hand well." In this regard it is noteworthy how often adolescent patients relate their good adjustment and positive outlook on life, despite their handicap, to their parents' early and consistent attempts to raise them with realistic and minimal restrictions. As one 16-year-old boy put it, as he was lying in bed receiving plasma infusion during a hemophilic bleeding episode, "Don't worry about the kids, Doc, but help …
Financing An Office, Personal Investments, And Money Management, James L. Keeler
Financing An Office, Personal Investments, And Money Management, James L. Keeler
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Today's medical doctor is very much like today's lawyer, engineer, or accountant in that he is trained very highly in his own field, but has received very little educational background for successfully managing the office he operates. Although I am not an expert in any of the areas which I am about to discuss, I would like to pass along some observations, most of which are drawn from experiences I have had while practicing as a CPA. There is no set way to handle many of these problems, and I can only present some of the pros and cons I …
Cogan-Guerry Microcystic Corneal Epithelial Dystrophy: A Clinical And Electron Microscopic Study, Robert G. King Jr., Ragnit Geeraets
Cogan-Guerry Microcystic Corneal Epithelial Dystrophy: A Clinical And Electron Microscopic Study, Robert G. King Jr., Ragnit Geeraets
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
In summary, microcystic epithelial dystrophy of the cornea as described by Cogan and Guerry has become a well documented clinical entity. In this paper, a case report and preliminary electron microscopic findings of a patient with this dystrophy were presented. This case showed a thickened, two-layered basement membrane which was completely missing in some areas. The second characteristic change was that of cystic epithelial areas containing debris. The possible significance of these findings and a diagnostic technique for detecting of these corneal changes were discussed.
Accounting Systems And Patien Receivables: Complementary Management Areas, Richard J. Vargo
Accounting Systems And Patien Receivables: Complementary Management Areas, Richard J. Vargo
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The first segment of my discussion will deal with medical accounting systems and my evaluations of those systems. The second part of the paper will deal with the topic of improving the cash flow from patient receivables. Cash flow is in many ways dependent upon the effectiveness of a doctor’s accounting system, and if the system works well and produces timely and accurate information, the cash from patient receivable will flow more efficiently.
Radiation Cataract: Biomicroscopic Observations In Rabbit, Monkey, And Man, Walter J. Geeraets
Radiation Cataract: Biomicroscopic Observations In Rabbit, Monkey, And Man, Walter J. Geeraets
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The type or configuration of lens changes in these two species was quite different. This can be understood on the basis of the structural differences of their crystalline lenses based on the location of the suture lines.
Cryopreserved Corneal Tissue: A Practical Guide To Its Use, Walter Mayer
Cryopreserved Corneal Tissue: A Practical Guide To Its Use, Walter Mayer
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
What we will explain in detail is the technique we have developed to actually use cryopreserved tissue in the operating room. Anyone who has followed the development of this type of transplant material has heard and read how important it is to follow exactly certain steps, but nowhere in the literature is there a guide as to how, in practice, the different steps are to be carried out. We know of no other procedure in ophthalmology where absolute adherence to the strictest set of guidelines is absolutely necessary.
Acuity Variations In Diabetes Mellitus, William W. Carroll
Acuity Variations In Diabetes Mellitus, William W. Carroll
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The purpose of this paper is to briefly review the factors involved in acuity changes in diabetes mellitus and to report findings suggesting a new concept, namely, diurnal fluctuations in acuity that are not associated with hypoglycemic episodes.
An Optical Approach To Aid Cerebral Hemiplegics, Thomas W. Nooney Jr.
An Optical Approach To Aid Cerebral Hemiplegics, Thomas W. Nooney Jr.
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
Communication is the process by which information is received, interpreted, and retained; however, communication often breaks down as a result of brain injury. It has been estimated that there are 400,000 adults in the United States with some degree of communication loss from stroke, and each year another 20,000 people become similarly afflicted. The ability to transmit and/or receive information depends on visual and auditory comprehension and retention, reading comprehension, visual motor facility, and speech. These areas are so interrelated that a collapse in one often causes a breakdown in a closely connected ability.

Experimentally Induced Coloboma In The Golden Hamster: A Preliminary Report, Ragnit Geeraets
Experimentally Induced Coloboma In The Golden Hamster: A Preliminary Report, Ragnit Geeraets
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The present study represents the second part of a more comprehensive investigation of the morphogenesis of the normal and abnormal embryonic fissure. The first part, an electron microscopic study of the normal closure, has already been completed. The second part consists of the attempt to induce colobomata by means of hypo- and hyper-vitaminosis A. If both attempts are successful, the resulting colobomata will then be compared with one another as well as with the sequence of events in the normal closure. It is hoped that this investigation will permit some insight into the cellular phenomena that lead to a congenital …

The Surgical Approach To Problems Of Sexual Identification, Howard W. Jones Jr.
The Surgical Approach To Problems Of Sexual Identification, Howard W. Jones Jr.
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
While transsexualism is a disorder which seems to affect both anatomical sexes, the gynecologist plays his principal role in the therapy of the male transsexual, i.e., the anatomical male who considers the difficulty to be that of a female psyche trapped within a male body. It is only with these male patients with a female gender orientation that this discussion will deal.
An Ounce Of Prevention, Nancy G. Witt
An Ounce Of Prevention, Nancy G. Witt
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
In conclusion, we have found that an educational and behavioral approach has been most effective in correcting maladaptive behavior in children, and complete success is only limited by our own creativity. We cannot advocate behavior modification for all children because neither we nor our children should adapt to an ineffective educational system. Improvement in programming in both academic and social skills must be of primary emphasis in prevention. We must concentrate our best minds and personnel in the preschool and primary school years. As the child learns to accept the consequences of his behavior, the necessary social skills to meet …
