Cytology Of Rectosigmoid Diseases Using The Replica Method, Victor Lawoyin, Klaus Anselm Mar 1972

Cytology Of Rectosigmoid Diseases Using The Replica Method, Victor Lawoyin, Klaus Anselm

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The cytology of rectal imprints of 105 control subjects and 79 patients with various rectosigmoid diseases has been studied. Our modified slide applicator was employed and found to be efficient, safe and easy to use. The cytological method has been more accurate than evaluation of the macroscopic appearance of the rectal mucosa only and therefore more efficient in the early diagnosis and follow-up of inflammatory bowel diseases. If used during routine proctosigmoidoscopy, it can help to determine the true incidence of proctocolitis in the population at large.

The Simultaneous Occurrence Of Monosodium Urate And Calcium Pyrophosphate Dihydrate Crystals In An Arthritic Joint, Gilbert B. Bluhm, Frank J. Viozzi Mar 1972

The Simultaneous Occurrence Of Monosodium Urate And Calcium Pyrophosphate Dihydrate Crystals In An Arthritic Joint, Gilbert B. Bluhm, Frank J. Viozzi

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Gout and pseudogout, two metabolically different diseases, occur rarely in the same individual. A patient is reported who featured calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate and monosodium urate cryslals simultaneously in the synovial fiuid exudate which was removed during an acute arthritic attack of the left knee. The patient represents the seventh such case reported in the literature. The pathogenetic differences of gout and pseudogout are reviewed as they relate to the role of the crystal.

Comparative Gastroscopic Study Of Choline Salicylate And Aspirin, S. C. Danao, B. M. Schuman Mar 1972

Comparative Gastroscopic Study Of Choline Salicylate And Aspirin, S. C. Danao, B. M. Schuman

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Choline salicylate is the anhydrous choline salt of salicylic acid. It possesses the therapeutic effects of aspirin. Clinical trials suggest that it is less irritating to the gastric mucosa. A double-blind gastroscopic study of the acute effects on the gastric mucosa of choline salicylate, aspirin and matching placebo was carried out. Using the fiberoptic gastroscope. the stomach was examined and photographed before, and ten minutes after, the patient had swallowed the tablets. Results were evaluated on the basis of combined endoscopic and photographic observations. This study suggests that choline salicylate in its tablet form causes less gastric mucosal injury than …

The Role Of Surgery In Cecal Diverticulitis, C. Grodsinsky, J. Soares, M. A. Block, B. E. Brush Mar 1972

The Role Of Surgery In Cecal Diverticulitis, C. Grodsinsky, J. Soares, M. A. Block, B. E. Brush

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Cecal diverticula, although rare, may result in acute or chronic diverticulitis. Rarely does acute hemorrhage arise from cecal diverticula. The diagnosis of acute diverticulitis usually is evident at operation and an appropriate resection is usually feasible, although the local status and general condition of the patient modifies treatment in some instances. Chronic cecal diverticulitis is usually difficult to distinguish from carcinoma and a resection is justified.

Branchial Anomalies In Idiopathic Hypoparathyroidism: Branchial Dysembryogenesis, Michael J. Miller, Boy Frame, Andrew K. Poznanski, C. E. Jackson, Gustave Bermudez

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Four of 13 patients with idiopathic hypoparathyroidism had associated congenital anomalies of branchial origin. Three had characteristic hypernasal speech. One of these patients exhibited a cleft palate and the other two had functional and anatomic anomalies of the velo-pharyngeal musculature which explained the speech disturbance. The fourth patient represents the twenty-second recorded case of the III and IV pharyngeal pouch (DiGeorge's) syndrome, manifested by absent parathyroids and thymus glands associated with unusual facial features and cardiovascular anomalies. Our four patients exhibited a total of 15 congenital anomalies of branchial origin. By including our patients with those reviewed from the literature, …

Artificial Insemination In The Human, John A. Board Jan 1972

Artificial Insemination In The Human, John A. Board

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The idea that impregnation might occur without coitus has aroused interest since ancient times. In the second century A.D., there was recorded a hypothetical discussion concerning a woman who had been inseminated by semen previously deposited in the bath water in which she bathed. In 1322, an Arab used artificial insemination with horses. A wad of wool was introduced into the vagina of a mare and left overnight. It was then held over the nostrils of a stallion, and with this stimulus the stallion ejaculated on a cloth held in readiness. The ejaculated material was then introduced into the vagina …

Venereal Disease, Robert E. Petres Jan 1972

Venereal Disease, Robert E. Petres

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

At this point in time, the most intensive efforts toward education should be made in the medical schools. Very shortly these students will be faced with large numbers of patients with venereal disease, and we must prepare them. Unfortunately, this area in the medical school curriculum has been progressively crowded out by what seemed more important. It is now apparent that even though the prevalence of venereal disease may wax and wane, they will always represent a sizable medical problem. We must gear medical education and medical reeducation to meet these needs.

How Safe Is Halothane?, Peter J. Cohen Jan 1972

How Safe Is Halothane?, Peter J. Cohen

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Halothane (2-bromo-2-chloro-1, 1, 1-trifluoro-ethane) is the most popular inhalation agent in today's anesthetic practice. Its desirable properties include high potency, nonflammabilty, patient acceptance, a low incidence of nausea and vomiting, ability to produce bronchodilation, and ease of maintenance. Prior to its introduction in 1956, it was subjected to an intense examination for both general and hepatic toxicity. Although these investigations disclosed no evidence of adverse effects, reports of liver dysfunction after halothane administration have appeared constantly in the literature. Thus, although the general safety of this drug continues to be excellent, the clinician is confronted with a dilemma each time …

Health Care And The Anesthesiologist: Influence And Factors, Robert G. Hicks

In summary, then, let us say that there are many factors influencing health care delivery of anesthesia in the United States. The people of this country expect improved delivery of medical care. The medical profession stands ready to do its part. And it expects the government to assume its liability. Simply stated, that means adequate funding.

Body Temperature During Surgery And Anesthesia, Amir Rafil Jan 1972

Body Temperature During Surgery And Anesthesia, Amir Rafil

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The recognition of fulminant hyperthermia and accidental hypothermia during anesthesia and surgery has given a new impetus to clinical thermometry in the operating room. It is suggested that in order to recognize and avoid these conditions in the anesthetized patient, a routine of continuous monitoring of body temperature be added to our armamentarium for patient care.

The Psychiatric Scene: A Resident's View, Wesley B. Carter

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Residents desire efficiency in their profession and agree with suggested certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. They are troubled, however, that often the knowledge required by the American Board is not supplied in their residency programs. Perhaps the APA can intercede and provide more continuity.
