The Optimal Interelectrode Distance For Sensory Nerve Action Potential, Yu-Lien Chou, Sheau-Ping Helen Pan Dec 1993

The Optimal Interelectrode Distance For Sensory Nerve Action Potential, Yu-Lien Chou, Sheau-Ping Helen Pan

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The value of sensory nerve action potential depends on a well-defined interelectrode distance, although there is no uniformity about the optimal recording montage in the published literature. The purpose of this investigation was to quantify the effect of different interelectrode distance upon amplitude, duration, surface area, and onset latency of the sensory nerve action potential (SNAP) obtained by the antidromic method. In 30 healthy subjects, the sensory nerve action potentials from the sural nerve of right lower limb were recorded with the active recording electrode posterior to the lateral malleolus and the reference electrode placed 1 cm, 2 cm, 3 …

Body Composition And Percent Body Fat In Long Distance Runners: Comparison Of Four Methods, I-Wen Penn Dec 1993

Body Composition And Percent Body Fat In Long Distance Runners: Comparison Of Four Methods, I-Wen Penn

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Body composition characteristics are among the fundamental factors to successful sport performance. Serial assessments of body fat in athletes provide us information about training effect. Long distance running incresaes bone mineral mass, skeletal muscle weight, and plasma volume. Each of these changes may have an impact on the basic assumed constants of the classic two-compartment body composition methods. The aims of the present study was to use the newly developed four- compartment method to evaluate the validity of three two-compartment methods (hydrodensitometry, tritium dilution, and whole body 40k counting) in white male long distance runners (n=10), and to compare the …

Hemiplegic Shoulder Pain During Acute Stroke: A Preliminary Report, Jui-Chang Li, Mei-Yun Liaw, Alice M. K. Wong Dec 1993

Hemiplegic Shoulder Pain During Acute Stroke: A Preliminary Report, Jui-Chang Li, Mei-Yun Liaw, Alice M. K. Wong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Shoulder pain was probably the most frequent complication of hemiplegia. Despite the extensive interest, there continued to be uncertainty about its etiology. In this study, 71 hemiplegic patients were regularly followed up after their cerebrovascular accidents (CVA) for 3 months (33 men, 38 women, with the mean age of 57 years), with the exclusion from another 21 patients of the previous disorders of hemiplegic shoulders, eg. fractures, dislocations, arthritis, or rotator cuff ruptures, etc. During the 3 months, a full rehabil-itation program was given, which consisted of physical therapy, occupational therapy, training in activities of daily living and speech therapy. Criteria …

Modified Shoulder Sling For Upper Brachial Plexus Injury : 3 Cases Report, Sui-Food Lo, Chen-Peng Leong, Ruey-Knen Chang, May-Kuen Wong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Brachiai plexus injury is commonly seen in rehabilitation clinic. Nerve transplantation and reconstruction surgery cannot improve the function of upper extremity immediately. They need physical and occupational therapy. Shoulder subluxation, pain, functional deficits are common sequelae of these injuries. In the past, shoulder sling had been used to correct shoulder subluxation. However traditional type of shoulder sling does not allow distal wrist and hand to function properly and poor reduction of shoulder subluxation. We designed a modified shoulder sling which consist of a leather belt with a wedge shaped spongy for backward compression and a forearm splint, they connected together by …

Cardiopulmonaty Stress Test And Psychosocial Counseling In Patient Following Orthotopic Heart Transplantation: A Casereport, Chen-Liang Chou, Tacho-Jen Liu, Tao-Chang Hsu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Cardiac transplantation is no longer considered to be an experimental procedure. Judicious choice of recipients, lengthier experience with immunosuppressive medication, improved surgical technique, and the introduction of cyclosporine have all enhanced survival rate. As improvements were made in the diagnosis and therapy for rejection and infection, graft artherosclerosis became the leading cause of death among long-term survival cardiac transplantation patients.A repeatable non-invasive cardiopulmonary stress can early detect allograft coronary artery disease & predicts its outcome. Moreover, psychological well-being and thus increase the quality of life. Therefore, these examinations are highly recommended for heart transplant patients in the long term follow …

Correction Of Bilateral Equinus Contracture In A Paraplegic Patient With The Ilizarov Technique, Ru-Lan Hsieh, Shier-Chieg Huang, I-Nan Lien, Chein-Wei Chang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Correction of equinus contracture of feet offers the chance for ambulation. The casereported here describes a 34-year-old paraplegic woman with scald burn resulted in equinus contractures of both feet associated with extensive scar formation who received the Ilizarov external skeletal fixation for the equinus correction and completed the ambulation training program. This technique offers a new horizon in the correction of joints contractures and deformities in traumatized patient as well as in patient suffering from spinal cord injury.
