The intracarotid sodium amytal (ISA) procedure, introduced by Wada in 1949, is used to identify cerebral dominance for language and memory function in preparation for epilepsy surgery such as unilateral temporal lobectomy . Five cases with complex partial seizure, four boys and one girl, were included in this study, Their ages of onset ranged from 3 to11 years old. Frequency of seizure ranged from 2 to3 fits per month to 50 to 60 fits per day. Four cases were right-handers, one case was left-hander. All of them had normal intelligence. The object of this study is to examine co-activities of eight muscle group in various lifting conditions. A total of 40 voluntary subjects with no experience of low back pain participated in this experiment. The muscle activities of interested were bicep brachii, thoracic erector spinae, lumbar erector spinae, latissimus dorsi, external oblique, rectus abdominis, rectus femoris, and semitendinosus of the right side body. Surface EMG signals were obtained in static holding postures of 3 kneeing angles, 5 trunk flexion angles, 2 horizontal liftingdistances, and 3 loading conditions. After recording, the percentages of maximum voluntary contraction (NEMG) and relative activity level …

A Spinal Cord Injured Patient Complicated With Huge Bladder Stones And Vesico-Ureteral Reflux, Lu-Wen Chen, Liu-Ing Bih, Liang-Fang Chen, Hwa Ting
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
A 25 years old male patient suffered from L1 compression fracture with weakness of both lower extremities and neurogenic bladder dysfunction 7 years prior to admission. Motor recovery over both lower extremities developed gradually that he could walk with bilateral axillary crutches later. However, the detrusor reflex did not restore so that a transurethral catheter had been left ever since he was injured. Frequent urinary tract infection manifested with fever and cloudy urine occurred off and on in the past years. Neither regular follow up nor urinary tract imaging study had been performed. Upon admission to our hospital, 5 bladder …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Spinal meningioma is a well circumscribed benign tumor. It grows slowly and acounts for about 25% of primary spinal cord tumors. It occurs predominantly in women and in thoracic region. Sometimes, we mistook its early symptoms for another problems such as arthritis, arachnoiditis, peripheral nerve disease, or motor neuron disease etc. Fortunately, Patient with severe motor deficit less than two months may get satisfactory improvements after surgery. The recurrent rate of spinal meningioma is much lower than that of intracranial meningioma. We reported a case of spinal meningioma at T4 level. He was diagnosed initially as lumbar disc herniation and …

Osteogenesis imperfecta is an inherited disorder of connective tissue, which affects the skeleton, ligament, skin, sclera, and dentin. It often produces multiple fractures and spinal deformities complicated with cardiopulmonary dysfunction. Osteoarthropathy, among which, will produce chronic pain, and is the main cause of functional disturbance of this kind of patients. We report a 20-year-old male patient with Osteogenesis imperfecta, who suffered from multiple long bone fractures and spinal kyphoscoliosis since his childhood. Two months before this admission, he had experienced one episode of accident with marked left hip and left elbow pain due to left hip joint dislocation and left …

Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy: A Common Cause Of Intracerebral Hemorrhage In The Elderly - A Casereport, Wen-Chung Tsai, Tyng-Guey Wang, Huey-Wen Liang, Jin-Shin Lai
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Cerebral amyloid angiopathy, defined as deposition of amyloid in the walls of brain vessels, is belived to be a common cause of intracerebral hemorrhage in the elderly. It differentiates from the intracerebral hemorrhage of hypertension by its specific location of bleeding. The hematoma from cerebral amyloid angiopathy, sometimes multilobar, is always located in the brain cortices and the white matter beneath them. In the previous reports, the presence of cerebral amyloid angiopathy accounts for 5-10% of non-traumatic cerebral hemorrhage. However, it has been overlooked or misdiagnosed all the time because of the lack of tissue proof. Recurrent bleeding occurs so …

Effectiveness of the mixture of quaternary ammonium, alkyl dimethyl ammomium glyoxal, glutaraldehyde and formaldehyde in the inactivation of bacteria and fungi was conducted in vitro. The studies were performed on 53 strains of bacteria, both Gram's positive and Gram's negative, and 5 strains of contaminant fungi. The concentration of this disinfectant was adjusted to 1:100, 1:250 and 1:500 v/v with the exposure time of 1, 5, 10, 20, 40 and 60 min. Most of the tested organisms were completely inhibited at the concentration 1:100 v/v within 1 min after exposure except for Citrobacter and fungi which were inhibited in 5 …
