Polymeric foams seem to have potential for use in many research areas such as cell seeding and macromolecule or drug loading. Three factors were studied to evaluate the efficiency of foams as drug carrier and releasing agents. Effect of polymeric properties was examined by using two types of polymers (PHBV 7 and PHBV 22) differing only in their valerate (copolymer) content. The other factor studied was the effect of loading extent on release kinetics and rate. The results showed an unexpected inverse proportionality between drug loading and release rate. They, however, were in accordance with foam physical properties such as …

In order to determine the effect of endogenous protein synthesis on CHL cell adhesion, the initial attachment of these cells to tissue culture dishes was measur ed in the pr esence of 1µgml -1 emetine, in which protein synthesis was inhibited by 97% as determined by labeling the cells with [ 3 5 S]-methio-nine. In the pr esence of this drug, 80% of cells were able to adhere after 2 hours of incubation at 37 o C, while, during the same period, 97% of the contr ol cells became attached. Cells str engthen their adhesion foll owinginitial attachment, spreading and …

Effects Of Acute Grayanotoxin-I Administrationon Hepatic And Renal Functions In Rats, Meral Aşçioğlu, Çi̇ğdem Özesmi̇, Paki̇ze Doğan, Fi̇ngen Öztürk
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
The effects of acute Grayanotoxin-I (GTX-I) administration on hepatic and renal functions in rats were investigated. GTX-I was administrated to the animals of groups 1, 2 and 3 at a single i.p. dose of 1 mg/kg, 0.5 mg/kg and 0.25 mg/kg respectively, and group 4 (control) received i.p. saline (0.9 %) solution only. One hour following the administration of GTX-I or saline, urine analysis (leukocytes, urobilinogen, protein, pH, blood, ketone, glucose, nitrites) was performed and serum was evaluated for activities of glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), \gamma-glutamyl transferase (\gamma-GT) and isoenzymes of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) (as a percentage of total LDH …
Effects Of Tcdd [2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-P-Dioxin(Tcdd)] On The Early Stage Of Pancreaticcarcinogenesis Induced By Azaserine In The Ratpancreas, Haydar Öztas
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
TCDD (2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo -p-dioxin), an addictive substance in cigarettes, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of pancreatic carcinoma. This compound has not been tested previously for carcinogenicity towards the pancreas, although TCDD is a known liver carcinogen. The present study was designed to ascertain whether TCDD may have a promoting effect on the development of precursor pancreatic lesions on the rat exocrine pancreas. For this purpose, 30 out of a total of 60 male Leeds rats aged two weeks received a single weekly i.p. injection of azaserine (30 mg/kg body weight) for 5 weeks. The rest of rats (n=30) were used …

Most current hypotheses regarding the pathophysiologic mechanisms of pregnancy-induced hypertention point to early placental abnormalities. Therefore, we attempted to determine whether serum human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels reflect a different trophoblastic secretory response of preeclampsia. Thirteen pregnant women with severe preeclampsia were matched with twenty-one normotensive pregnant women with singleton pregnancies in the third trimester. Serum b-hCG levels were found to be significantly higher in severe preeclampsia, compared with controls (p

Determinants Of Birth Weight: Does Air Pollutionhave An Influential Effect?, Selda Hizel, Turgay Coşkun
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
To investigate the influence of air pollution on birth weight, information on maternal and infant characteristics was collected from 458 mothers of infants less than one year of age born in 1995 and under observation at a mother and child health center in Ankara. In addition, the obstetrical histories of 520 infants born in 1990 were collected from the delivery room records of a maternity hospital. Daily air pollution data were obtained and mean monthly values were used for statistical analysis. Among the possible risk factors, sex, maternal age, maternal employment, paternal employment and parity were found to be influential …
