In this research, the pathogenesis and presence of transplacental pestivirus infection were investigated in different flocks. For this purpose, a total of 661 pregnant ewes and 29 rams were used. 174 of 661 pregnant ewes were sampled twice in the second or the third month of gestation and as well as on the day of gestation, whereas 487 of them were sampled only on the day of delivery. In addition, precolostral blood samples of 770 lambs born from those pregnants ewes, 109 of which delivered twins, were also withdrawn. Pestivirus was not detected in the blood samples tested. However, in …

Genetic determinants of lactose fermentation, proteolytic activity and bacteriocin production in the strains L. lactis subsp. lactis MPL114, L. lactis subsp. cremoris MPC112 and L. lactis subsp. lactis biovar. diacetylactis MPD166 were studied. As a result of mutation and genetic transfer studies, it was determined that all of these characters were encoded by the 65.4 kb plasmid in L. lactis subsp. cremoris MPC112. Lactose fermentation and proteolytic activity were encoded by the 68.0 kb plasmid and bacteriocin production was encoded by the 12.4 kb plasmid in L. lactis subsp. lactis MPL114. Lactose fermentation, proteolytic activity and bacteriocin production in L. …

Antiinflammatory And Antipyretic Activity Of Polygonum Lapathifolium In Rats, Oya Keleş, Tülay Bakirel, Süleyman Şener, Handan Aydin, Keri̇m Alpinar
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study was conducted to evaluate the pharmacologic effects of Polygonum lapathifolium L. (Polygonaceae), growing naturally in Turkey. The antiinflammatory activity of the ethanol extract of the root and rhizome of P. lapathifolium was evaluated using carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats. Intraperitoneal pretreatment with extract at doses ranging from 100 to 500 mg/kg significantly inhibited the acute phase of this experimental model of the inflammatory process in a dose-dependent manner. At maximal dose (500 mg/kg), it exhibited a significantly higher action when compared with those of other doses and was found to be 1.08 times as active as indomethacin. The …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Tilmicosin is a long-acting macrolide antibiotic used in the treatment of respiratory disease. It was administered once (50 mg/kg b.wt) to fowls via the oral route for determination of kinetic properties and tissue levels. After oral administration, tilmicosin's pharmacokinetics conformed to a two compartment open model. Tilmicosin was slowly eliminated from the serum and lung with mean half-lives of 30.18 ± 2.38 and 75.74 ± 3.67 hours, respectively. The mean maximum concentration of the drug in the lungs was found to be 6.2 times greater that of serum. Serum and lung tilmicosin concentrations reached peak values 4.66 ± 2 and …

This study was carried out to determine the effect of various quantitative and qualitative feed restriction methods during the growing period on the reproductive performance of broiler breeder hens. Normal and low density diets were offered to broiler breeder pullets by three different qualitative restriction methods (every day, skip-a-day, five days in a week). The trial was conducted on 864 4 to 72 week old Avian AK-34 broiler breeder hens. The qualitative and quantitative restriction methods, examined during the growing period, had no significant effect on egg production, chick weight, settable egg rate, egg yolk and egg albumen weight, egg …

Effects Of Propionibacterium Strain P5 On In-Vitro Volatile Fatty Acids Production And Digestibility Of Fiber And Starch, Veysel Akay, Richard G. Dado
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The objectives of this study were to determine whether Propionibacterium affects in-vitro VFA production and/or increases the digestibility of fiber and starch. A 4 x 4 x 4 factorial arrangement was used. The main factors were feed source, length of fermentation, and level of added Propionibacterium. Fermentations were conducted in batch cultures with Propionibacterium added to the flasks just prior to the addition of rumen inoculum. The total VFA, acetate, and propionate concentrations increased 9, 5, and 18%, respectively with the addition of Propionibacterium. Propionibacterium decreased dry-matter digestibility by 2% and fiber digestibility by 14%. A second study was conducted …
Multiple-Trait Analysis Using Bayesian Methods In Animal Breeding: A Gibbs Sampling Approach, Mehmet Zi̇ya Firat
Multiple-Trait Analysis Using Bayesian Methods In Animal Breeding: A Gibbs Sampling Approach, Mehmet Zi̇ya Firat
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Most animal breeding experiments are based on more than one economically important trait measured in each individual. In the statistical analysis of the resulting data, traits recorded in the same individuals are often considered one at a time. Usually we are interested, however, not only in the mode of inheritance of a particular trait but also in its relationships with other traits. Multivariate analyses are required to make inferences about genetic and phenotypic correlations between traits, but point estimates of such parameters can be poor even when breeding data on hundreds of animals are used. Bayesian methods exclude variance matrices …

It was observed that on the 1^{st} day of hatching, the lungs had the same properties as adults and that there was no structural difference between the right and left lungs. The average diameter of atria rose according to the age and were 20.733±0.868 µ and 21.413±0.929 µ on the 1^{st} …

The Urological Management Of Voiding Dysfunction In Chronic Spinal Cord Injury, Hann-Chorng Kuo
The Urological Management Of Voiding Dysfunction In Chronic Spinal Cord Injury, Hann-Chorng Kuo
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) results in various dysfunctions of the urinary bladder and urethra. These neurological deteriorations after SCI cause varying urological symptoms and complications. Early detection of high risk SCI patients is important. Regular determination of intravesical pressure, residual urine and leak point pressure can provide information to avoid upper tract deterioration. Agg-ressive urological management can reduce the mortality rate from urinary tract infection (UTI) and a better quality of life can thus ensue. In the management of urological sequalae of SCI, preservation of renal function, freedom from UTI, freedom from indwelling catheter, and continence should be the …
