In this study, 3470 livers of beef cattle slaughtered by the Ankara Meat and Fish Company were inspected. In these animals, 82 livers had telangiectasis, and the incidence of lesions was 2.3%. They were characterized grossly by single or multiple red-brown foci, generally 1 to 5 mm in diameter, and occasionally larger. They were located on the parietal surface of the lobus dexter or rarely scattered throughout the organ. Microscopically, dilated sinusoids filled with erythrocytes were observed in initial lesions; the distortion, atrophy and necrosis of hepatocytic cordons were seen in advanced cases. Infection with the parasite Diplostomum sp. can lead to severe ocular pathology and may result in host mortalities in commercial fish farming. Here we show that such infection is rife in a major lake used for fishing in Turkey. In a study of Acanthobrama marmid fish in Keban Dam Lake, Elazığ, Turkey, we found the infection period was normally between May and September each year, and that the prevalence and abundance of eye lens parasites reached a maximum in September. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of BVDV infection and existence of persistently infected (PI) cattle in the Trakya region. In total, 260 samples of leukocytes were isolated from dairy cows (65 samples) and breeding bulls (65 samples) and also from cows and bulls in slaughterhouses (65 samples from each). After two blind passages in foetal bovine kidney (FBK) cell culture, they were screened for BVDV antigen with indirect immunoperoxidase labelling. Carbohydrate compositions of apolipoprotein E (apo E) isolated from rat serum very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) and intermediate density lipoproteins (IDL) + low density lipoproteins (LDL) were analyzed and compared. Rat serum VLDL and IDL+LDL were isolated by a discontinuous density gradient ultracentrifugation for 7.9x107g.min. Following delipidization, apolipoproteins were subjected to sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) analysis. Apo E polypeptides were eluted by diffusion in 100 mM PBS buffer (pH 7) containing 0.05% SDS. The values of some materials with various mechanisms of actions on the wound healing were determined using qualitative and quantitative parameters and histopathologic findings. A total of 48 full thickness skin wounds, 4 from each of 12 rabbits, were created on their dorsal aspects. Of these wounds, 4 were allocated to group 1 (control), 24 to group 2 and 20 to group 3. The clinical and gross evaluation of wrapping the facial nerve by a lyophylized duramater (LD) or an autogenous omental graft (AOG) for nerve regeneration, after experimentally induced facial paralysis which was created by neurectomies and repaired by autogenous sural nerve grafts in dogs, were undertaken. The reduction of the laminectomy membrane (LM) with synovial fluid soaked absorbable gelatin sponge (SSAGS) after laminectomy was investigated. Modified laminectomy of the first and second lumbar vertebra and concomitant full length durotomy were carried out in 16 mongrel dogs of different ages and sex. In this study, two subjects, 1) whether Visceral Larva Migrans (VLM) takes place when T. canis larvae-infected chick livers are eaten and 2) whether any differences are present between larval distributions, clinical signs and pathological disorders of the infections caused by eggs and infected liver, were investigated in the chick-mouse model. For this purpose, 15-day-old broiler chicks (n=42) and 3-month-old albino mice (n=62) were used. Thirty chicks were each infected orally with 5000 infective T.canis eggs. A total of 404 horses was examined from the selected cities (Istanbul, Bursa, Balıkesir) of the Marmara region of Turkey. Blood was collected from all horses and the sera were analyzed for the presence of antibodies to equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) using an agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) test. The results revealed that none of the horses were positive for antibodies to EIAV.

Polysaccharidase genes from rumen bacteria were transferred to and expressed in ruminal and non-ruminal Gram-positive bacteria. The transformation efficiency and genetic stability of polysaccharidase genes in bacteria from different habitats were investigated. PCR amplification of cloned polysaccharidase genes from Escherichia coli, Lactococcus lactis, Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus sanguis and S. bovis strain 26 showed that rearrangement of plasmid and the gene fragment did not occur. The DNA band sizes from all primers agreed with the expectations of some transformants of S. bovis JB1 being rearranged. In this study conducted in İstanbul, the contamination of sandpits in children's playgrounds with Toxocara eggs was investigated. For this purpose, a total of 132 sand samples were taken from the sandpits of 63 playgrounds between November 1998 and September 1999. Toxocara eggs were found in 10 (15.9%) of 63 playgrounds. A total of 22 eggs were recovered. The average egg number per 100 g of sand was found to be 0.067 for the overall examined playgrounds and 0.44 (ranging from 0.2 to 1.2) for the contaminated ones.

The presence of Salmonella enteritidis was investigated in 123 liquid whole quail eggs. Salmonella strains were identified and sero-grouped by coagglutination test and slide agglutination test. Seven (5.69%) of 123 whole quail eggs were in group D1 and were sero-typed as Salmonella enteritidis. It was found that in phage-typing of Salmonella enteritidis, three of 7 strains were Salmonella enteritidis PT4 , two of them were PT1, one of them was PT7, and one of them was indefinite.

The in vitro effects of various concentrations of sodium fluoride on the percentages of motile spermatozoa and abnormal spermatozoa with the hyaluronidase activities of semen were investigated. The purpose of this study was to compare the birth rates after transfers of microinjected hybrid mouse zygotes into hybrid CB6F1 (C57BL/6J X BALB/c) and outbred CD-1 foster mothers. One or two hours after microinjection of a \beta -actin-Gfp gene construct into the male pronucleus, hybrid mouse zygotes were transferred into CB6F1 and CD-1 foster mothers. In addition, non-microinjected hybrid zygotes were transferred into foster mothers of both strains. In this study, nitroscanate (Lopatol tablets, Novartis) was tested for its efficacy against Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina and Dipylidium caninum in naturally infected dogs. The prevalence and colonization sites of Helicobacter spp. in the stomachs of dogs, and their association with gastric pathology were investigated. Scraping cytology, culture, urease test and histology were used to detect helicobacters in the stomachs of necropsied dogs. Gastric Helicobacter spp. were detected in 103 (84.4%) of 122 dogs from 1 month to 14 years of age. The uncultured spiral organisms seen in the most of stomachs were designated as H. heilmannii. A total of 83 faecal samples carrying rotavirus were used in this survey. Five different electrophoretypes were distinguished according to their migration patterns. All the rotaviruses examined in this research proved to be group A and to have short migration patterns. While local migration patterns were detected in individual herds (e.g. A, B, C, M, P and T), two different migration profiles were detected in herd K during rotavirus enteritis after a two year interval. Seafoods are very perishable, and many different methods are used for the determination of their quality. The effects of alcohol, passive smoking and alcohol+passive smoking on certain biochemical variables were investigated in mice serum. For this purpose, 72 female and 49 male Swiss albino mice were used. The animals were approximately 10 weeks old at the beginning of the experiment and their initial body weights ranged from 22 to 31 g. All animals were divided randomly into four groups; the control, alcohol, passive smoking and alcohol+passive smoking groups. The effects of chromium (Cr) on egg production, egg quality, egg yolk cholesterol level and selected serum parameters of laying hens were investigated. Sixty 16-wk-old Hyline White 77 strain were randomly assigned to two groups of 30 hens each and fed either a basal diet or basal diet supplemented with 20 ppm Cr (CrCl3.6H2O). Egg and blood samples were collected at monthly intervals after the egg production reached peak level. The influence of ammonia concentration on ^{15}N-ammonia incorporation and de novo synthesis of amino acids by three predominant non-cellulolytic species of ruminal bacteria, Prevotella bryantii B_{1}4, Selenomonas ruminantium HD4 and Streptococcus bovis ES1, was investigated. Cranial cruciate rupture was diagnosed by clinical, radiographical and arthroscopical examinations in 15 dogs, and arthroscopically observed intraarticular degenerative changes were arthroscopically described and surgically treated. The drawer test was positive in 9 cases and indefinite in 6 of the cases suspected of having a rupture in the cranial cruciate ligament. In 2 cases, pain was present and in 4, swelling was observed in the joint. Haemocyte Classification And Differential Counts In The Freshwater Crab, Potamon Fluviatilis, Hi̇jran Yavuzcan Yildiz, Hasan Hüseyi̇n Atar

Three haemocyte groups were identified in the freshwater crab, Potamon fluviatilis: hyalinocytes, semigranulocytes and granulocytes. The proportion of hyalinocytes was found to be 15%, that of semigranulocytes 54.25% and that of 30.75% granulocytes.

As grass carp culture for vegetation control in freshwater is a new field in Turkey the disease problems of grass carp have not been well documented. Spontaneous disease occurrence in the course of grass carp culture was reported in the present study. During the culture of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) some disease problems occurred causing a high level of mortality. Larvae of Aelurostrongylus abstrusus were identified in the feces of a 2-year-old female cat suffering from dyspnea and incoordination for 18 months. The larvae had a terminal S-shaped projection and a subterminal dorsal spine. The larvae measured 363-378x15 µm (aver. 370x15 µm). Firstly, moxidectin (0.4 mg/kg) was given subcutaneously to 3 healthy stray cats over 1 year old to check adverse effects on cats. No adverse reaction was observed.
