The present study aimed to investigate the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of orally administered granisetron, a 5-HT_3 receptor antagonist, and its possible effect on serum histamine and serotonin levels in uremic pruritic patients who have not yet undergone dialysis. Fourteen patients with newly diagnosed end-stage renal disease were asked to complete a questionnaire about pruritus, and histamine, serotonin, PTH and cortisol levels were measured on days 0, 7 and 14. Granisetron (1 mg) was administered twice daily for 2 weeks. Plasma histamine levels were found to be up to 7 times higher in all patients and they did not change …

The central nervous system may modulate many aspects of inflammation through alterations of the autonomic nervous system and/or the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. The aim of present study was to examine the impact of controllable acute stress on the course of experimental colitis and to elucidate the roles of serotonin (5-HT) and corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) in the central modulation of the stress. In the stress group, acute electric shock (AES; 0.3-0.6 mA) was applied, while in the central agonist group, rats were injected with central 5-HT agonist (400 µg/kg). In the antagonist groups, 10 min before the application of AES or …
