In the present decade, kisspeptin has been a fascinating topic in the reproductive spotlight. Kisspeptin is a neuropeptide, produced mainly in the hypothalamus from Kiss1 gene. This gene was initially discovered in 1996 as a tumor suppressor gene in human malignant melanoma. Then in the year 2003, researchers found that mutations of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPR54), which is the strongly cognate receptor of kisspeptin, were associated with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism in mice and humans. There are many kisspeptin distribution and function studies (both in vitro and in vivo) in mammals. In ruminants, kisspeptin has been studied mainly in sheep and …

The aim of this study was to investigate the concentrations of Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in DHA enriched hen egg yolk (H-DHA) in comparison with egg yolk from chicken, duck, quail, ostrich and crocodile in order to find a source of DHA for boar semen cryopreservation. A pool (10 eggs in each) of DHA enriched hen egg yolk and egg yolks from chicken, duck, quail, ostrich and crocodile were analyzed for fatty acids profile at the Nutrition Laboratory, Mahidol University. Most recently, adipose tissue (AD) has become an alternative source for mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) instead of the invasive method of bone marrow (BM) aspiration both in human and canine. In this study, we compared MSCs derived from adipose tissue (AD-MSCs) and bone marrow (BM-MSCs) regarding morphology and cell yield for instant usage by using the standard protocol of counting colony forming unit-fibroblast (CFU-F). The effect of crude extract of wild cape gooseberry, P. minima Linn. on zebra fish, D. rerio, embryo was investigated. Five concentrations (0.01%, 0.1%, 1%, 10% and 20%) of an aqueous crude extract of the plant leaf was prepared and tested with newly spawned embryos in 96 well plates. The observation effect was based on the toxicity endpoint composed of lethal effects, sublethal effects and malformation effects appearing within 144 hours postfertilization (hpf). The results suggested that the lowest observed effect concentrations (LOEC) for a lethal effect and a sublethal effect were 20% and 10% respectively. Not fully developed pigmentation …

The present study aimed to identify specific and upregulated proteins in virulent SS2 strain that mightconfer pathogenicity. We performed a comparative proteomic assay to analyze the difference in secretome betweenvirulent SH-08 strain and avirulent SH-YH07 strain. Virulence of tested strains was determined using porcine andzebrafish models. The supernatant from bacterial cultures was collected at early exponential phase (OD600 = 0.4).Proteomic assay identified 52 proteins from the virulent strain supernatant and 29 proteins from the avirulent strainsupernatant. Glutamine is known to modulate the uptake activity of nutrient transporters in mammalian cells. The aim of the study was to elucidate the influence of absence of extra- or intracellular glutamine on the uptake activity of the amino acid transport system A in placental BeWo cells. Extracellular glutamine was absent by culturing the cells in regular medium without glutamine. Intracellular glutamine was depleted by culturing the cells in regular medium without glutamine and by treating the cells for 16 hours with methionine sulfoximine (MSX), an inhibitor of glutamine synthetase. This study used Pearson correlation test to analyze statistical correlation between shelter canine intake and number of dogs euthanized in municipal animal shelters in 20 counties/cities in Taiwan from 2001 to 2011. Data of animal shelters were official data provided by the Council of Agriculture, the competent authority of the Animal Protection Act in Taiwan. Among the 20 counties/cities in Taiwan, Hualien County, Penghu County, Keelung City, and Chiayi County were excluded from this study due to incomplete data. Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is an important food-borne zoonotic protozoa. Infection occurs when humans and warm-blooded animals consume raw or lightly cooked cysts containing meat or sporulated oocysts contaminated food. T. gondii infection has been observed in food animals in many countries suggesting the significance of food animals in the epidemiology of toxoplasmosis. Morphological Aspects By Light And Scanning Electron Microscopic Studies Of Swamp Buffalo Endometrium At Follicular And Mid-Luteal Phases, Paisan Tienthai, Kriengyot Sajjarengpong

This study was carried out to observe morphological changes of swamp buffalo endometrium at follicularand mid-luteal phases. Uterine horns were collected from female buffaloes at a local abattoir and the selected estrousstages were categorized into the follicular (n = 10) and mid-luteal (n = 10) phases. General histology andhistomorphometry were examined under light microscope (LM) whereas a scanning electron microscope (SEM) wasused to study surface epithelial changes. The results showed that the height of the endometrial epithelium, thenumber of superficial endometrial glands and the number of capillaries were significantly greater (p < 0.05) at thefollicular phase. By SEM examination, the ciliated and secretory cells with different patterns, i.e. abundant microvillion the apical part or secretory protrusion in various degrees, distinctly increased at the follicular phase. In themeantime, numerous secretory cells with stubby microvilli were covered throughout the endometrial surface withsecretory vesicles on endometrial glandular orifices at the mid-luteal phase in which the ciliated cells were sparselyseen. It was concluded that the swamp buffalo endometrium obviously revealed modifications during the estrouscycle for physiological events, i.e. sperm transport, early embryonic development and implantation.

The present study investigated the association among serum insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), backfatthickness, and age at first observed estrus in replacement gilts. Acute and subchronic tests on the toxicity and reproductive effects of aqueous ethanolic extract of rhizomes of Lasia spinosa Thw. was studied in male rats. In the acute test, oral administration of 5, 10, 20, 40 g/kg of the extract showed no mortality or behavioral changes. In the subchronic test, administration of 5 or 20 g/kg of the extract for 28 days revealed no mortality of the animals. No differences in hematological parameters were observed in either control or treatment groups of both tests. Abdominal massage (AM) is a common method for semen collection in avian species. There are few data concerning electro-ejaculation (EE) in this species. This experiment was carried out to study the effect of semen collection techniques (AM and EE) on semen quality and sperm motility parameters in three Siamese fighting cocks (Gallus gallus). EE was done under general anesthesia by isoflurane vaporizer. In experiment 1, either low voltage (5- 10 volts) or high voltage (5-30 volts) protocols for EE stimulation was applied. The present study aimed to develop a quantitative method for the detection of chicken infectious anemia virus (CIAV). A real time polymerase chain reaction (real-time PCR) was developed to determine CIAV. The developed real-time PCR was a rapid and reliable quantitative technique for CIAV DNA compared with the conventional PCR. The appropriate cut-off was at the 40th cycle. Results indicated that the CT value of 39.62 was shown at the 10-9 dilution or 0.454 fg/μl or 3.86 x 103 DNA copies. This data suggests that the limit of detection for real-time PCR is 0.454fg/μl. This study aimed to investigate gene expression patterns throughout preimplantation embryos and their comparative expression in morphological quality blastocysts using real-time RT-PCR. Bovine oocytes underwent maturation process, fertilized and were cultured in vitro. Degree of fragmentation and differentiation were the criteria to categorize day-7 blastocysts as of good and poor quality. All of the embryos from each developmental stage were used to quantify transcript abundance. It was found that E-cadherin was highly expressed in immature and mature oocytes, then it decreased at 2- to 16-cell stages, and later increased in morula and blastocyst stages. This study was done to evaluate the efficiency of ultrasound-guided transvaginal follicular aspiration without hormonal pre-stimulation for collecting the oocytes of indigenous Thai beef cattle (Bos indicus), and to assess the vitrification method for their preservation. All animals between 2.5-12 years were categorized according to age (i.e. heifer, young cow, and old cow). A medium-sized follicle (φ 3-8 mm.) had the greatest distribution among the various size classes (p≤ 0.05), and the mean of oocytes collected from each group was not significantly different. The purpose of this study was to survey Lawsonia intracellularis in dogs in Thailand by using Polymerase chain reaction technique. Lawsonia intracellularis is obligatory intracellular bacterium which causes proliferative enteropathy in animals, including dog. Fecal samples from 48 dogs were collected from Bangkok, Pathumthani and Nakhon Ratchasima and tested for L. intracellularis by PCR technique. The dogs were classified into two groups according to the presence or absence of diarrhea. A study on the histology of the extrahepatic bile ducts was conducted in eight female and eight male twentyweek- old healthy Iranian partridges (Alectoris chukar). The extrahepatic bile ducts possessed tunica mucosa, muscularis and serosa. The tunica mucosa of the extrahepatic bile ducts was lined by non ciliated simple columnar epithelium. The apical cytoplasm of epithelial cells was covered by a continuous striated border of microvilli. The goblet cells were absent in epithelium. The present study was designed to determine the protection afforded by different vaccination programs against the virulent Newcastle disease virus (vNDV). The chickens were divided into 7 groups, 40 chickens in each. Group 1 did not receive any vaccine and served as a negative control group. Our study investigated proteins in bovine spermatozoa using 2-DE and LC MS/MS and found a markedly different expression in mature bovine proacrosin binding protein (sp32), which is the focus of the present study. Spermatozoa extract from nine fertile Brahman bulls was separated using 2-DE followed by Coomassie brilliant blue staining. From over 600 protein spots, a particular protein spot with two different patterns was detected at 32 kDa.
