The underlying mechanism of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) causing reproductive failure and re-circulation in herds has remained unclear. Endometrial cells primarily infected with PRRSV may serve as a significant target for PRRSV eradication. Primary endometrial (PE) cells from the porcine uterus were isolated and cultivated to pursue this possibility. Immunocytochemistry analysis revealed the protein expression of classical estrogen receptors (ER-and ER-), but not PRRSV receptors, CD163 and sialoadhesin in PE cells. A 3.5-year-old, 3.9 kg, intact, male Persian cat was presented at the hospital for chronic multifocal nodular dermatitis. The lesions with ulcerated nodules and yellow granular discharge were found mainly on the body and tail. Fungal culture was positive to Microsporum canisand skin biopsy revealed multifocal extensive fungal granuloma throughout necrotic fibrosis. The cat was treated with itaconazole for 4 months and the lesions were slightly improved. The skin nodules localized on the body, except the tail, were eventually removed. This study aimed to establish a business model of reproductive biotechnology in small ruminant. Sets of questionnaires were administered to interview 115 farmers from different regions in Thailand. Data including age, educational background, farm size and type, source of replacement breeders, breeding technology, farm problems and attitude toward the technology were collected. Logistic regression analysis along with neutral network analysis was used to identify factors associated technology interest with P< 0.05. Results showed that among 115 participants, 72.2% were interested in reproductive biotechnology. In univariate logistic regression analysis, farmer’s age [OR=0.96, 95% CI (0.93,1.00)], educational background [OR=1.17, 95% CI (0.13,0.80)], production problems [OR=1.28, 95% CI (1.12,1.478)] and marketing problems [OR=1.40, 95% CI (1.18,1.67)] were independently associated with technology interest (P< 0.05). Similar to the neural network analysis, farmer’s age, overall farm problems, marketing problems, production problems and educational background were the primary factors influencing technology interest of farmers. Next, the data from 18 semi-structured interviews were interpreted to establish suggested business models of reproductive biotechnology package. This indicated that a single business model could not fit the expectation of all farmers. Thus, six business models were established and 2 models were initially implemented in 7 farms with a moderate successful rate. In conclusion, the implement ofreproductive biotechnology in small ruminant farm should be addressed to the young farmers with high education to improve the animal genetic value and sustain their livelihoods. However, the different farm managements play a key role in the success of these business models.

The aim of this study was to determine the screening for antimicrobial properties against mastitis pathogens of turmeric extract in combination with various antiseptics. The antibacterial effects of turmeric extract in combination with various antiseptics (5% povidone iodine, 0.5% v/v hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), 0.5% v/v chlorine (Cl2), and 0.5% v/v chlorhexidine) were determined using the agar welldiffusion method. Results showed that additional turmeric extract had significantly decreased the antimicrobial activities of either Cl2or chlorhexidine against almost all mastitis pathogens, except S. agalactiaefor Cl2 and gram negative bacteria for chlorhexidine. The present study evaluated the accuracy of four methods, i.e. eosin-nigrosin, trypan blue, hypo-osmotic swelling test (HOST) and Hoechst 33342 (H342)/propidium iodide (PI) for assessing bovine sperm vitality. Frozen-thawed semen (n = 30) of Holstein bulls was layeredon 40%/80% percoll solutions to isolate viable spermatozoa. An aliquot of viable spermatozoa was kept at 37°C (live sample); the rest was submitted to cold shock (dead sample). The two aliquots were mixed in three proportions, corresponding to 0%, 50% and100% of viable cells; the sperm vitality was analyzed. This study was to investigate intraocular structures of canine absolute glaucomatous eyes using real time B-scan ultrasonography in accordance with the amplitude mode. Ten normal eyes and twenty absolute glaucomatous eyes were included in this study. Ocular biometry via closed-eye technique was performed usingthe Ultrascan®Imaging System (Alcon Surgical Laboratory,Fort Worth, USA), with a 10 MHz mechanical sector probe. Oral and faecalsamples were collected from thirty four dogs with periodontal disease in Chiang Mai, Thailand to investigate the prevalence of Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamase -producing E. coli(ESBL-EC) and to determine the antimicrobial resistance patterns of isolatesagainst 12 antimicrobial agents. Ten of thirty-four dogs (29.41%) were positive for ESBL-EC, one dog (2.94%) was positive from an oral sample and nine dogs (26.47%) were positive from faecal samples. All ESBL-EC isolates were multi-drug resistant (i.e. against ≥ 3 antimicrobial classes). The expression patterns of neurotrophins(NTs) at the gene and protein level including nerve growth factor (NGF), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), neurotrophin-3 (NT-3),and TrkB receptor were investigated in the prehierarchical follicles of Zi Geese by RT-qPCR and Western blotting analysis. This study evaluated the effect of oxidized soybean oil on the immune response to porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome modified live vaccine (PRRS-MLV), and the oxidative stress status in nursery pigs.Seventycastrated weaned pigs, from a free PRRS virus infected herd, were divided into two groups: treatment group (n=63) and control group (n=7). A cross-sectional study aimed to estimate the prevalence and to investigate the characteristics of overweight/obese cats visiting an animal hospital in Bangkok, Thailand. Electronic medical records of feline patient visiting the Small Animal Teaching Hospital, Chulalongkorn University between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2017 were reviewed. The cat’s information included age, breed, sex, neutering status and body condition score. The ultrasonic scalpel instrument was compared with the conventional staphylectomy technique in elongated soft palate surgery in twenty brachycephalic airway obstructive syndrome (BAOS) canines. Patients were randomly divided into the conventional incisional and ultrasonic scalpel group. Operation time (minute), bleeding volume (ml), respiratory distress score, postoperative complications score, pain scores, epithelialization score and inflammatory score were assessed. Two weeks after surgery, soft palates tissues were biopsied from 7 conventional surgery dogs and 8 ultrasonic dissection device applied dogs. The operation time and bleeding volume in the conventional surgery group were significantly higher than that in conventional group (P<0.01 and P<0.001, respectively). In addition, the respiratory distress score was significantly higher in the conventional surgery group compared with the ultrasonic dissection device group on day 3 and day 28 post-operation (P<0.05). There were no significantly different postoperative complication scores, pain scores or inflammatory scores between two groups. The epithelialization score of the UD was significantly higher than that of the conventional group (P<0.05). The ultrasonic dissection device is user friendly, has decreased surgical time, complete hemostasis and provides fewer postoperative complications. The ultrasonic dissection device is recommended in high-risk patients such as those displaying senility, chronic inflammation, or bleeding disorders.

Genomic DNA (gDNA) is a prerequisite for genomic research. However, the collection of blood samples from young animals for gDNA extraction is not practical. Since piglet tail docking is routinely performed in pig farms to prevent injury from tail biting, docking tails served as a practical source for gDNA in piglets. An adult male wild-caught king cobra, Ophiophagus hannah, of unknown age was raised in captivity for seven years. The snake showed swelling at the caudal third of the body. Physical examination revealed an approximately 15x10 cm firm mass in coelomic cavity. Radiography showed soft tissue density causing complete obstruction of intestinal tract. The mass was surgically removed and diagnosed as leiomyosarcoma. The snake was monitored and the mass recurred two months post-surgery. This cross-sectional study describes the epidemiological data of feline urolithiasis in Thailand. Information on 923 feline uroliths submitted from Thailand to the Minnesota Urolith Center between January 2010 and December 2017 was evaluated. The frequency of urolith types, the relationships between urolith type and breeds and sex, were analyzed. Calcium oxalate was the most common urolith (49.5%) and was commonly found in male cats (OR = 1.81; 95%CI: 1.39, 2.36) with a mean age of 6.3±3.2 years. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a rapid heat-treatment method on Thai QX-like infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) and the efficacy on protection from the virus after heat treatment. QX-like IBV isolate THA46 was incubated at 56 oC. The incubated virus was collected every 5 min for up to 1 h and then they were inoculated into embryonated chicken eggs. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the prevalence of Trypanosoma evansi infection and its associated risk factors in camels in the Jazan region, southwestern Saudi Arabia. A total of 679 blood samples were collected from three local breeds of camel – Awadia, Awarkia and Sawahelle – in 11 randomly selected governorates of Jazan region. Blood samples were screened by Giemsa-stained blood film (GSBF) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques. In this study, we improved the protocol for cardiac differentiation of rabbit induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) using Rho-associated protein kinase (ROCK) inhibitor (Y-27632), low O2 tension (hypoxia) and melatonin treatments. The novel four field isolates successfully obtained from clinical cases were prepared in IEC-18 cells to conduct the in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) by determining minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC)s; either intracellular (InMIC) or extracellular MICs (ExMIC). The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of the recombinant herpes virus of turkey-Newcastle disease virus (rHVT-NDV) vaccine against Newcastle disease virus (NDV) challenged in 14 days old broiler chickens. One hundred chickens were divided into 5 groups of 20 chickens each. Group 1 chickens received live NDV vaccine via the intra-nasal route. Group 2 chickens received rHVT-NDV vaccine by subcutaneous injection. Group 3 chickens, received both live NDV and rHVT-NDV vaccine.
