Foodborne picornaviruses and human calicivirus have one molecule of linear, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA, covered by a capsid without a lipid envelope. These viruses have a spherical shape, a particle diameter of 27-40 nanometers and the triangulation (T=3) icosahedral symmetry of a capsid. The replication cycle of poliovirus (PV) and hepatitis A virus (HAV) occurs in the cytoplasm of the host cell. The viral proteins are synthesized by the translation of RNA after the virus particles attach and uncoat at the host cell membrane. Major translated proteins are structural protein (capsid protein) and functional proteins e.g. proteases and RNAdependent RNA polymerase. …

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of the weaning-to-oestrus interval (WOI) and parity on the expression of oestrus and the timing of ovulation in crossbred (Large White x Landrace) sows. The detection of pro-oestrus and oestrus was performed every 8 hrs in all sows, by observing the reddening and swelling of the vulva and by applying the back pressure test in the presence of a boar. Thai native, mixed Thai native and layer-type chickens, 50 birds of each and forty broiler chickens, were reared separately, to determine the susceptibility of each breed to infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV). All birds received IBDV when 36-days-old, given by oral inoculation. Mortality rates were observed for 10 days. Blood samples were collected on days 36, 39, 42 and 46 and sera were tested by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for IBDV antibodies. The standard, in vitro, minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 5 antimicrobials; chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, norfloxacin and nalidixic acid were evaluated against vibrios isolated from diseased black tiger shrimps Penaeus monodon. One hundred and ninety-seven pathogenic vibrio isolates obtained from different shrimp culture areas in Thailand during March 2001-January 2002 were, V. fluvialis (50 isolates, 25.38%), V. damsela (41 isolates, 20.81%), V. vulnificus (39 isolates, 19.80%), V. parahaemolyticus (28 isolates, 14.21%), V. cholerae (25 isolates, 12.69%) and V. alginolyticus (14 isolates, 7.11%). A study of genetic parameters, breeding values, genetic and phenotypic trends, 305-day milk, fat and protein yields was carried out using 6,357 pedigree and milk records of Holstein Friesian crossbreds, recorded between 1990-2002, in the Master bull project database, Artificial Insemination Division. First lactations, with a lactation length of more than 150 days, were adjusted to a 305-day yield and Restricted, Maximum Likelihood (REML), estimated, variance components. Genetic parameters and breeding values were estimated using the Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP). Pathological changes in four species of Thai commercially valued fish (age 1-1.5 month), Gunther's walking catfish, Clarius macrocephalus (Gunther), Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus), Striped catfish, Pangasius hypophthalmus (Sauvage) and common silver barb, Barbodes gonionotus (Bleeker), after exposure to crude cyanotoxin extract, at different concentrations, were investigated. The prevalence and antibiotic sensitivity of E. coli., and haemolytic E. coli. F4+ and haemolytic E. coli. F4- (E/F4+, E/F4-, HE/F4+ and HE/F4-) was investigated in five hundred and thirty, randomly collected, rectal swabs from pig herds in five areas of Thailand, between the dates June 2000 and January 2001. The prevalence of E/F4+, in each area was statistically significantly different with a range of 21.8-42.5% (30.4±8.8%). The greatest prevalence was found in the Northern area of Thailand, following by the Central, Western, Eastern, and Northeastern areas, respectively. A DNA fingerprinting technique, repetitive sequence based polymerase chain reaction (rep-PCR), was used to characterize 20 isolates of both pathogenic and nonpathogenic Leptospira spp. Rep-PCR differentiated 20 Leptospira isolates into 16 rep-PCR patterns with a high index of discrimination (D=0.963). The results of cluster analysis demonstrated that pathogenic and nonpathogenic Leptospira belonged to separate clusters with at least 60% similarity. Overall, the results of our studies indicated that rep-PCR is useful for fingerprinting Leptospira species. The technique is simple, rapid, inexpensive and may be used for strain tracking in molecular epidemiological investigations of Leptospirosis outbreaks in the future.

The Anatomical And Histological Features Of The Placenta In Eld's Deer (Cervus Eldi Siamensis), Adisorn Adirekthaworn, Kriengyot Sajjarengpong, Wimon Pothiwong, Pakorn Prachammuang

A placenta was recovered at post mortem from an eld's deer, Cervus eldi siamensis, for anatomical and histological study. Macroscopically, there were eight placentomes, elliptical and cup-like in shape, with an average dimension of 6.19, 4.87 and 3.41 cm. in length, width, and thickness. Branches of the umbilical vessels that connected the placentomes to each other and to the umbilical cord were markedly noticeable. The cross sectioned surface had a radiant appearance of interdigitating structures. The uterine caruncles and fetal cotyledons were convex and concave, respectively. Microscopically, chorionic villi were in contact with the maternal crypts by means of interdigitating. …

Real time B-mode ultrasound for ovarian examination in pigs has been used in many experimental studies. All were aimed at elucidating the relationship between the duration of oestrus, the time of ovulation, the time of insemination and fertility. This review describes the uses and benefits of real time B-mode ultrasound for ovulation monitoring and pregnancy diagnosis for fertility control in swine breeding herds. The reliability of diagnosis is very much dependent on the experience of the investigator and the type of ultrasound machine used. The safety of trichlorfon at a therapeutic dose for ectoparasitic treatment in healthy carp (Cyprinus carpio) was evaluated by the measurement of serum cholinesterase (ChE) activity. Three groups of juvenile carp (70-80 g b.w., n =30 each) were bathed with 0.5 ppm trichlorfon 1, 2 or 3 times, respectively, at 5-day intervals. Serum ChE activity in each fish were compared pre and post-treatment. A significant post-treatment reduction of serum ChE activity (p < 0.05) was found in all groups, although they, resumed their pre-treatment levels 14 days after trichlorfon was withdrawn. All fish were clinically healthy throughout the experiment, suggesting, that the doses of trichlorfon applied in this study were safe.

A comparison of the efficacy of a Newcastle disease (ND), inactivated, experimental vaccine (NDIEV) and a ND, inactivated, commercial vaccine (NDICV) was under taken. 2,425 neoplasms from dogs in Bangkok were submitted to the Department of Pathology, Chulalongkorn University, from January 1982 to December 2000 (a 19-year period) and were retrospectively studied to survey the prevalence of the different types of tumours. Histopathological diagnosis was based on the World Health Organization (WHO, 1974) classification of tumours in domestic animals. A 4-year-old, thoroughbred mare showed clinical signs of back pain and weakness of both hindlimbs. Kissing- Spines-Syndrome (KSS) of the T14-16 dorsal spinous processes were diagnosed from clinical examination and radiography. The horse returned to training after three months and to racing in five months after paralesional betamethasone injections.

A female, grey, 24-year-old horse was showing clinical signs of weight loss, ataxia, hersutism, high fever, dysuria, nasal discharge and moist rale lung sounds. Gross examination revealed a single, white, firm, pituitary mass with a diameter 2.5 x 2.1 x 1.5 cm, compressed and overlying the hypothalamus. Histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations revealed the characteristic of a ACTH-derived pituitary adenoma.

The retrospective study of 30 cases records using formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded intestines, from Feline Panleukopenia (FPL) infected cats using histopathological criteria as seen by the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, Chulalongkorn University between 1997-2001, was undertaken. The objective of the study was to examine FPLV infection in feline intestines showing characteristic lesions of parvovirus enteritis and to describe the relationship between the intestinal microscopic lesions of FPL in affected cats, with the location of FPL antigens, using immunohistochemical methods. A study was carried out on the invasion of Guppy skin by Tetrahymena spp. after various types of skin injury. Three types of skin injuries, scale removal, brush scratching and acetic acid irritation were performed. Tetrahymena spp. only the acetic acid irritation method allowed to invade the damaged skin. Guppy skin using this method, the fish caudal fin was covered with a 10%, acetic acid soaked, cotton strip for three minutes and exposed to water containing Tetrahymena spp. for 24 hours. The first commercial farm in Thailand to culture Abalone was studied to approve sanitation and food safety. Water quality and bacterial contamination criteria in both water from culturerelated sources and Abalone prior to marketing was examined. The water quality and bacteria found in the water samples (total aerobic plate, Vibrio count and MPN total coliforms) indicated the culturing practices adhere to the standards for shellfish sanitation. Total coliforms and other bacteria found in the Abalone samples also complied with microbiological guidelines for seafood products. The Determination Of Serum Copper And Zinc Concentrations In Thoroughbred Foals And Their Dams After Parturition, Achara Tawatsin, Panumas Ruantongdee, Prachak Poomvises

Serum copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) concentrations in 5-35 thoroughbred foals and their dams during first 24 weeks after parturition were determined. Mean serum Cu in foals increased significantly (p < 0.01) with age, from 10.4±1.1 μmol/l at week 1 to 25.9±0.8 μmol/l at week 24, whereas those in mares decreased significantly p < 0.05, from 26.2±1.3 μmol/l at week 1 to 22.0±0.5 μmol/l at week 24 after parturition. There was a large negative correlation between the mean serum Cu concentrations in foals and their dams (r = -0.86, p < 0.01). Serum Zn concentrations in both foals and mares on the other hand, gradually decreased after parturition, ranging from and 17.7±0.3 μmol/l at week-1 to 13.8±0.5 μmol/l at week 24, in foals and from 16.2±1.2 μmol/l at week 1 to 14.4±0.5 μmol/l at week 24 in mares. The correlation coefficient between the mean serum Zn concentrations in foals and their mares was high (r = 0.895, p < 0.01).

Abalone are high cost seafoods regarded as delicacy. The decline of world abalone fishery has initiated the development of cultured abalone production in some countries. Thailand possesses geographical areas which are suitable for abalone habitats and the commercial abalone farming is currently promoted by the government. Commercial fishery for abalone in Thailand are presently unfamiliarity of their biology. This report describes the basis biology of abalone, development of abalone culture in tropical regions; selection and management of broodstock, in tank spawning, rearing of larvae through grow-out culture of advanced juveniles, to meet the requirement of consumers' seafood standard.

Seminal Plasma: Its Function And Importance For Pig Artificial Insemination, Kampon Kaeoket, Padet Tummaruk

The objective of this review is to update information concerning the function of seminal plasma on the pig reproductive system, as well as its importance in artificial insemination (AI). It has been shown that seminal plasma advances ovulation in gilts by an average time of 10-14 hours, improves sperm motility, sustaines sperm viability during uterine transport, suppresses immune activities (chemotaxis of neutrophils), improved sperm transport, improves fertilisation rate, improves litter size in gilts and indirectly enhances fertility. The hormone estrogen, within the seminal plasma, causes a release of prostaglandins from the pigs endometrium to the utero-ovarian veins and lymphatic vessels. …
