Comparison Of Oxygen Consumption In 4-Second Sprint Interval Exercise With Varied Intensity And Rest Period, Remzi Satiroglu, Christos Kyrillou, Jieting Wang, Edward Coyle
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Sprint interval training (SIT) is usually performed at maximal ‘all-out’ intensities, that are 5-8-times higher than the power needed to elicit VO2peak. However, the %VO2peak associated with repeated submaximal power sprints (%Pmax), particularly when paired with varying rest periods, remains unknown. Investigating the %VO2peak in repeated submaximal power sprints is pivotal, enabling the personalization of workout routines to specific training goals.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to systematically investigate the acute physiological responses induced by three levels of %Pmax intensities (50%, 75%, and 100% of Pmax) with three varying …

Effects Of Endurance Training On Skeletal Muscle Mass And Inflammation In A Rat Model Of Heart Failure, Aaron Garcia, Dillon Harris, Quinten Pigg, Daniela Sayuri Inoue, Mariana Janini Gomes
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Chronic disease states including heart failure (HF) often lead to reduced physical activity, resulting in disuse and low-level systemic inflammation, which contribute to the decline in muscle mass and function. An important goal of therapy in HF patients is to counteract or prevent the development of skeletal muscle alterations in order to restore a normal functional capacity. Exercise is an established means of improving exercise capacity and quality of life in patients with HF. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the impact of an endurance program on skeletal muscle mass and inflammation in a rat model of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH)-induced …

Blood Pressure Variability In Young Male Adult Habitual Vapers, Rie V. Conley, Claire E. Kissell, Ziba Taherzadeh, Danny Dubroy, Benjamin E. Young, Ziyad Ben Taleb, Paul J. Fadel
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The use of e-cigarettes (i.e., vaping) has risen dramatically in the last few years. Vaping is more appealing and accessible to young people than traditional smoking. The ease of use can increase the frequency of vaping, which may increase the amount of nicotine consumed. Nicotine is a potent vasoconstrictor that may also affect blood pressure (BP). Indeed, previous studies have shown that traditional cigarette smoking increases BP variability. This is noteworthy because elevated BP variability has been shown to predict future development of cardiovascular disease. However, whether habitual vaping influences BP variability remains unknown. PURPOSE: To test the hypothesis …

Relationship Between Intestinal Permeability And Microvascular Responses In A High-Risk Hispanic Population Of The Rio Grande Valley, Sophia M. Moreno, Alissa Olvera, Abigail Gomez, Ryan Russell, Melody Cantu, Andrea Toledo, Yu Lun Tai
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The Rio Grande Valley (RGV) has ~3x higher rates of diagnosed cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) than the US, which combine to be the leading cause of preventable death in the developed world. Microvascular blood flow (MBF) responses are an early indicator of vascular insulin resistance, and is blunted with obesity, T2D, and those at high risk for T2D. We have previously shown that apparently healthy people in the RGV display impaired MBF responses, helping explain the disparities noted with chronic disease. However mechanisms explaining this early vascular insulin resistance remain unexplored. Recent studies indicate that increased …

Exercise Pressor Response In Hispanic Adults With Family History Of Hypertension, Ashlesha D. Dalve, Justo Perez Iii, Ruby A. Nyarko, Jasdeep Kaur
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Family history of hypertension (FHH), being an unmodifiable risk factor, increases probability of developing hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases. The prevalence of hypertension in Hispanic/Latino (H/La) males is 50.3%, while it is 48.9% in non-Hispanic white (NHW) males and 57.5% in non-Hispanic black (NHB) males. Among adolescents aged 8 to 17, H/La youth has the highest incidence of hypertension as compared to all other races. It is evident that young normotensive adults with positive family history of hypertension (+FHH) exhibit exaggerated exercise pressor response. Additionally, a higher sympathetic activity to cold pressor test (CPT) was found in normotensive NHB adults …

Examining The Effect Of Exogenous Ketone Supplement On Indices Of Peripheral Vascular Health/Function, John Kolade, Alison Ortiz, Prarthi Shah, Ken Perry, R. Matthew Brothers
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death in the US and worldwide. The risk for and prevalence of CVD are elevated by various factors including impaired micro- and macrovascular function. Associated mechanisms are multifactorial but are related to elevated oxidative stress and/or inflammation which contribute to reduced nitric oxide bioavailability and ultimately vasodilatory reactivity. Ketogenic diets, commonly used as a strategy to lose weight and improve health, have been reported to improve mitochondria function, as well as antioxidant and inflammatory status. To the best of our knowledge, the effects on vascular function are less understood. PURPOSE: This …
