Face masks reduce the spread of viral respiratory particles, however, their impact on respiratory physiology requires further research. Previous studies reported negative changes in gas exchange data when wearing a surgical mask, however, breath-by-breath data has not been analyzed. PURPOSE: To compare physiological changes when wearing an N95 mask and surgical mask at rest. Variables measured include oxygen consumption (VO2), carbon dioxide ventilation (VC02), respiratory exchange ratio (RER), heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), minute ventilation (MV), and discomfort. Weight management via exercise is critical in both athletic and general populations. It is unclear what modality of exercise elicits the greatest caloric efficiency. PURPOSE: To compare the energy expenditure of three different exercise regimens when performed at a self-selected pace. METHODS: Recreationally active men (n=3) and women (n=4) performed 3 separate exercise bouts at a self-selected pace: total body Tabata (TBT), treadmill running Tabata (TRT), and continuous running (CONT) in a counterbalanced manner with at least 48h between bouts. In physically active people (e.g., ~8,000 steps/d), an acute bout of exercise improves postprandial fat metabolism when measured the morning after exercise. However, in people who have been inactive for more than two days, the acute bout of exercise does not improve postprandial fat metabolism as reflected by a greater increase in plasma triglyceride concentration and a reduced whole body fat oxidation. This phenomenon whereby fat metabolism is suppressed by prior inactivity is termed ‘exercise resistance’. Advanced age is associated with an increase in basal inflammation of the organs. Previously we have found that T cells accumulate in the liver of old mice. A large proportion of these cells are CD8+ and produce inflammatory cytokines. We have previously demonstrated that CD8+ T cell depletion results in improved glucose tolerance in old mice. However, the mechanisms by which CD8+ depletion improves glucose tolerance is unclear. Sport performance is influenced by sport-specific requirements for body composition. One major predictor of body composition is protein intake. Higher protein intake tends to cause leaner body composition relative to lower protein intake, especially during caloric deficit. In Bexar County, ~72% of the adult population is overweight/obese and 15.5% are diabetic. This suggests that high protein diet could be a high leverage option in the San Antonio population for optimizing body composition for sport performance. Evidence links serum 25(OH)D levels and the gut microbiome to colon carcinogenesis, with vitamin D pivotal in modulating the immune system and intestinal epithelial function. The acute effects of heat therapy on glycemic markers oppose those of the chronic effects. While the postprandial glucose response is exaggerated during whole body heat exposure, chronic heat exposure lowers HbA1c. Additionally, the acute effects of heat therapy differ depending on the amount of body exposed to heat. Heating a single hand does not increase fasting glucose and lowers postprandial glucose.
