The Relationship Between Postural Control And Motor Proficiency In Children With Prader-Willi Syndrome And With Obesity, Alberto Garcia, Debra J. Rose, Daniela A. Rubin
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is a rare neurodevelopmental genetic disorder that can lead to obesity. Children with PWS exhibit poor motor skills and poor postural control. Postural control is defined as the ability to regulate sensory information to maintain a controlled, upright posture. Underdeveloped vestibular and proprioceptive systems, shown in PWS, may interfere with maintaining posture and performing fundamental skills that require effective sensorimotor integration. Obesity (OB) can also be negative to postural control and motor skill development. PURPOSE: This study determined the relationship between postural control and motor proficiency in children with PWS and those with OB but without …

Modeling The Oxidative Metabolic Breakdown Of Ethanol And Its Effects On The Cardiovascular System, Jessica F. Farfan, Allan Knox, Grady Hanrahan
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Chronic ethanol consumption contributes to the global prevalence’s of cardiovascular disease by mechanisms involving an inflammatory response and consequent lipid peroxidation. Cytochrome p450 is a part of the microsomal ethanol oxidizing system (MEOS) and can utilize iron complexes and the reductant NADPH to catalyze the breakdown of acute/chronic ethanol consumption. However, efficacy of MEOS to prevent cardiovascular burden induced by ethanol consumption is not clear. PURPOSE: To demonstrate the response of the cardiovascular system in response to the oxidative metabolic breakdown of ethanol via MEOS. METHODS: An extensive literature search provided data to develop a mechanistic model of the metabolism …

Relative Contribution Of Cardiac And Peripheral Blood Flow To Blood Pressure In Humans: The Role Of Metaboreceptors, Gabriel B. Carlota, Matthew Pizano, Stephanie S. Wang, Areum K. Jensen
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The autonomic nervous system plays an essential role during exercise by adjusting cardiac output (CO) and redistribution of peripheral blood flows. One primary mechanism responsible for such alterations is the exercise pressor reflex (EPR), a feedback mechanism from contracting muscles via mechano- and metabo-receptor activation. The EPR adjusts the circulation by evoking reflex increases in sympathetic outflow to the heart and the vasculature, eventually increasing blood pressure (BP) during exercise. Previous studies suggested that relative contribution of cardiac and peripheral blood flow to regulate BP may depend on various factors (e.g., sex, health status). Thus, we thought to investigate if …

The Neglected Category Of Sub-Elite Athletes In Ironman Triathlon, Derek Buesgens, Caio Sousa
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Physical tests and training programs are tailored considering many factors, including the athletic level (i.e., amateur vs. professional, also known as age-group vs. elite). Ironman triathlon (IM) is a long-distance endurance event that thousands of athletes participate in around the world. However, the conventional division of athletes between age-groupers and elites neglect a group of amateur athletes who perform similarly to elite athletes. The spotlight on a new category of “sub-elite” athletes highlights the importance of new physical assessment protocols for a group largely underestimated as an amateur but overrated as an elite athlete. PURPOSE: The goal of this …

Does Carrying Golf Equipment Unilaterally Or Bilaterally Influence Spatiotemporal Gait Parameters?, Yunsheng Zou, Guanrong Cai, Jordan Cannon, George Salem
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Golf is a popular multimodal recreational physical activity and sport. Golf equipment transportation (GET) is a consistent demand in golf, with over 6 kilometers of walking distance and 10,000 steps accrued, on average, in an 18-hole round. Gait asymmetries, especially in step time and step length, are associated with decreased efficiency and increased metabolic cost. Thus, gait asymmetries in different GET methods may have implications for fatigue and golf performance. PURPOSE: To compare symmetry in gait spatiotemporal parameters of two GET methods with each other and unloaded walking over flat ground. We hypothesized that GET would result in asymmetric step …
