The Study Of Periodicity Of Eating And Public Health Nutrition Issues, Karen E. Harrington Apr 2001

The Study Of Periodicity Of Eating And Public Health Nutrition Issues, Karen E. Harrington

Doctoral

This thesis set out to provide an objective understanding of periodicity of eating in a group of free living adults, by determining the temporal pattern of nutrient intake during eating occasions throughout the day. A dietary assessment study was carried out using a 7-day estimated food diary in a sample of 133 adults recruited from a city local authority. During the survey period, respondents were met on at least three occasions to encourage and motivate them to follow their usual dietary habits and to record their intakes in a as detailed a manner as possible. A combination of quantification methods …

An Integrated Risk Assessment Tool To Evaluate The Existing Risk Managment System Within A Health Care Facility, Laura F. Breen Jan 2001

An Integrated Risk Assessment Tool To Evaluate The Existing Risk Managment System Within A Health Care Facility, Laura F. Breen

Masters

Risk assessment is a method used to identify risks within an organisation. It is required by the Safety Health and Welfare at Work Act, 189 for the purpose of safety management. No one method can effectively identify all types of hazard and risks within organisations. The insufficiency of individual risk assessment techniques to generate objective data as to the level of risk, is now generally accepted as an issue in risk management. Therefore, a combination of risk assessment techniques, best suited for the organisation, could improve risk assessments. This study set out to develop and combine a number of risk …

Cell Surface Effects Of Androgens Between 1 Pm And 100 Nm On Rat Sertoli Cells And Two Human Prostatic Cell Lines, Lncap And Pc3: Evidence For Two Membrance Receptors, Fiona Lyng, G. R. Jones, F. F.G. Rommerts Jan 2000

Cell Surface Effects Of Androgens Between 1 Pm And 100 Nm On Rat Sertoli Cells And Two Human Prostatic Cell Lines, Lncap And Pc3: Evidence For Two Membrance Receptors, Fiona Lyng, G. R. Jones, F. F.G. Rommerts

Articles

Androgen-induced calcium fluxes and gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) were studied in three different cell types. A transient (2–3 min duration) increase in intracellular calcium levels was observed within 20–30 sec of androgen addition, which was followed by a plateau phase with steroid concentrations higher than 1 nM. The kinetics of the calcium responses were similar in immature rat Sertoli cells, which contain normal nuclear receptors; the human prostatic tumor cell line, LNCaP, which contains a mutated nuclear receptor; and the human prostatic cell line, PC3, which does not contain a nuclear receptor. The human A431 tumor cell line did …

Development Of An Amperometric Biosensor For Lactate., Brian Lillis, Catherine M. Grogan, Helen Berney, Bill Lane Jan 2000

Development Of An Amperometric Biosensor For Lactate., Brian Lillis, Catherine M. Grogan, Helen Berney, Bill Lane

Conference Papers

A gold enzyme electrode for lactate, fabricated on silicon has been developed. Standard silicon processing and micromachining techniques have been applied to the fabrication of three sensor types.

Two planar types and a containment sensor are presented. The enzyme lactate oxidase (LOX) was immobilised in a suitable matrix and placed on a planar gold electrode or in a gold coated, KOH etched silicon cavity. Activity and stability of the enzyme LOX was assessed in a modified BSA gel and two sol gel matrices. The enzyme has shown above average stability of three months, stored dry, when immobilised in a sol …

Persistent hypoglycaemia in infancy is most commonly caused by hyperinsulinism. A case is reported of the somatic loss of the maternal 11p in an insulin secreting focal adenoma in association with a germline SUR-1mutation on the paternal allele in a baby boy with hyperinsulinism diagnosed at 49 days old. A reduction to homozygosity of an SUR-1 mutation is proposed as a critical part of the cause of focal hyperinsulinism.

Phenmedipham Process Development, Maura Byrne Jan 1998

Phenmedipham Process Development, Maura Byrne

Masters

The objective of this work was to investigate the process for the production of an organic herbicide, phenmedipham, utilising isobutylacetate as solvent and to scale up the reaction to one litre. This was carried out according to a technical bulletin received from Barclay Plant Protection Ltd. Difficulties were encountered in isolating the product, methyl N-(3-hydroxyphenyl) carbamate, from stage 1 with isobutylacetate as solvent. An investigation of the use of other solvents for the reaction process led to the use of ethyl acetate, in a modified version of the method used by Schering A-G, and resulted in a 93% yield of …
