This study was conducted with the aim of identifying the tick species infesting cattle, sheep and goats and their seasonal activities in the Burdur area of Turkey. The study was carried out between 1 September 1999 and 31 August 2000 on animals owned by local farmers in Burdur and 14 surrounding villages. The study centres were visited twice a month. The ticks collected from animals and barns were brought to the laboratory and identified at species level by stereo-microscopic examination. The aim of this investigation was to compare some quality characteristics of goose-meat salami with those of turkey- and chicken-meat salami in order to determine its suitability for consumption and to able to use goose meat for meat product technology. The pH values of experimental samples were highest in the goose-meat salami and lowest in the turkey-meat salami. Moisture rates of samples produced with a mixture of two kinds of poultry meat were lower than those of the others. This research was carried out on 125-day-old Ile de France (IF)X Akkaraman (AK) (G1) male lambs. In the research, the phenotypic parameters of some testis characteristics determined before and after slaughtering were calculated. The least-squares means of left and right testis diameters, left and right testis lengths, left and right testis volumes before and after slaughtering were found to be 3.7±0.09 cm and 4.2±0.12 cm; 3.9±0.10 cm and 4.2±0.11 cm; 6.6±0.17 cm and 7.4±0.21 cm; 6.9±0.17 cm and 7.4±0.17 cm; 51.7±2.76 cm^3 and 70.1±4.57 cm^3; 57.8±3.76 cm^3 and 87.4±7.86 cm^3, respectively. This study was carried out on cattle to detect the seroprevalence of babesiosis around Kayseri between July 1997 and January 1999. During this period a total of 191 cattle were examined for the Babesia species. Blood samples were collected from the cattle to obtain sera. During sampling, thick and thin blood smears were prepared from the punctured tail of each animal. Ticks were collected from the animals sampled. The sera were tested for the presence of antibodies to the Babesia species by IFAT. For the first time in Turkey, renal autotransplantation in 7 cats and renal allotransplantation in 7 cats having blood-crossmatch-compatible donors were performed. Immunosuppression was maintained by a prednisolone-cyclosporin combination in the renal allotransplantation group. All cats in the renal allotransplantation group died during the operation or between 3 and 72 h postoperatively. Two cats in the renal autotransplantation group survived approximately 2 years. Hyperacute or acute rejection findings were not encountered according to perioperative observations, laboratory findings or histopathological evaluations of renal allografts. In this study we examined factors affecting the colonization of campylobacters in chick intestines, colonization times and elicited immune responses. In chicks, infected orally by minimal infective dose _{100} (MID_{100}), colonization in the intestines was observed to reach 100% during the 3-week period following C. jejuni and C. coli inoculation. When the SDS-PAGE protein profiles of the inoculated and isolated strains were examined similarities of 98.3% among C. jejuni strains and 98.5% among C. coli strains were determined. The objective of the present study was to transfer sheep embryos produced in vitro to recipient ewes. Ovaries were taken from slaughtered Kıvırcık ewes and transferred to the laboratory in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) at 30-35 ºC. The seasonal variation and meat composition of blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, 1896) were investigated. Twenty (10 male, 10 female) crabs were used each season. The total weight of the samples was estimated and the ratios of crude protein, lipid, dry matter and crude ash were obtained from meat of the body and claws. Comparatively higher values of dry matter, crude ash and lipid were determined for the claw meat of males in winter. Bacillus subtilis RSKK246 was found to produce approximately a 65-kDa \alpha-amylase enzyme. A gene was isolated encoding \alpha-amylase activity that corresponded to this size and was inserted into pUC18 plasmid which was transferred to Escherichia coli. An approximately 1.7kbp fragment, which contains a whole \alpha-amylase gene, was excised and inserted into pUB110 and then transferred into the different B. subtilis strains including RSKK246, RSKK243, RSKK244, YB886 and ORBAM. This study was carried out in Malatya and vicinity to determine the seroprevalance of Babesia ovis in sheep. A total of 220 sheep sera were tested against B. ovis using the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). In addition, peripheral blood smears from these sheep were prepared and examined for B. ovis. The ELISA test showed that 55.9% of sheep were seropositive for B. ovis infection. The infection rate was 49.2% in sheep which were 1-12 months old and 59% in sheep which were older than one year. In the microscopic examination of blood smears, four out of 220 sheep were found …

Some characteristics related with the fattening performance of Tushin lambs reared in the Research and Application Farm of Ataturk University and subjected to intensive fattening were determined. The inital fattening weight, final fattening weight, and total and daily weight gain during the fattening period were 19.71 kg, 38.07 kg, 18.35 kg and 203.48 g respectively. An 8-year-old cow admitted to the Veterinary Faculty, Internal Medicine Clinic (University of Fırat, Elazığ/TURKEY), was diagnosed with intussusception, and the diagnosis was confirmed by experimental laparotomy. Intussusception was corrected by enterectomy and intestinal anastomosis. Defecation on the day following the operation indicated normal intestinal flow. The animal was kept under observation for ten days after the operation, and had a full recovery.

This study was conducted in two stages to determine the ensiled qualities of corn, alfalfa and sugar beet pulp, and the effects on food intake and nutrient digestibility of corn and alfalfa silages used alone, together and with sugar beet pulp silage in lambs. In the first stage, corn, alfalfa and sugar beet pulp were ensiled and silos were opened after 45 days. Silage samples were taken for determination of silage quality and the samples were analysed. Recent advances in molecular biology enable researchers to understand the basis of breast cancer much better and show that hereditery breast cancer may result from mutations on several specific gene loci including BRCA1, BRCA2, p53, ATM and PTEN. These genes are tumor supressor genes and although their functions are different, they are all involved in the maintenance of genomic stability after DNA damage. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of various disinfectants in different concentrations against embryonated Toxocara canis eggs. For this purpose, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10% iodine, 2% glutaraldehyde, 10% benzalkonium chloride, 7% sodium hypochloride, 1% potassium permanganate, 70% ethyl alcohol, 10% potassium hydroxide and 3% phenol solutions were used as the disinfectants. Contradictory results have been reported from various studies regarding the effect of age on susceptibility to oxidative damage. Using different parameters, we carried out a comparative study on the erythrocytes and erythrocyte membranes of healthy elderly and young adults to determine how resistance to oxidative damage is affected by aging. Thin layer chromatography and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis under denaturing conditions were used to estimate changes in membrane phospholipids and cytoskeletal proteins, respectively. The sera collected from 152 sheep older than one year old sheep in various parts of Yozgat Province were tested for Toxoplasma gondii antibodies using the Sabin- Feldman dye test. Out of the 152 sera examined, 69 (45.4%) were seropositive at different dilutions (34 samples at 1/16, 21 at 1/64, 11 at 1/256 and 3 at 1/1024).

The correlation coefficients divided into direct and indirect effects among ewe weight in the mating period and lambing, birth weight and weaning age of lamb, and weaning weight of Awassi lambs raised in Erzurum conditions were determined in this study. In path analysis, the direct and indirect impact of birth weight and weaning age of lamb on weaning weight were found to be highly significant. Partial correlation and standardized partial regression coefficients among weaning weight, birth weight and weaning age of lamb were also observed to be highly significant.

The levels of interleukin-1beta, tumour necrosis factor-alpha, and interleukin 6 in gingival crevicular fluid of phenytoin-treated patients (from sites exhibiting overgrowth and sites not exhibiting overgrowth) and control subjects were investigated. Six epileptic patients exhibiting severe phenytoin-induced gingival overgrowth, 12 patients with chronic gingivitis and 11 subjects with clinically healthy periodontium were included in the study. The cytokine levels were analysed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and expressed as ng/2 sites. Objective: To determine the mechanism of action of Methotrexate and Vepesid on the HEp-2 cells isolated from human laryngeal cancer cells morphologically and flow cytometrically (G1, G2, S and PI). Materials and Methods: The HEp-2 continuous cell line was used. Cultivation of the cells was realized in EMEM medium with 10% fetal bovine serum at an atmosphere of 37ºC with 5% CO_2. Six different concentrations of Vepesid and Methotrexate were prepared by diluting with deionized water (5 µg/ml, 50 mg/ml, 500 µg/ml). H. influenzae is a fastidious bacteria, so the selection of a reliable method for in-vitro susceptibility tests is particularly important. The E-test is a practical method for detecting in-vitro antimicrobial susceptibility of antibiotics by MIC values. This study was performed using the E-test for direct patient management and in order to obtain epidemiological data on H. influenzae.
