From January 1999 through April 2000, 208 Candida strains were obtained from hospitalized patients with nosocomial infection. Most of the species were isolated from urine (77.8%) followed by oropharynx (8.2%), blood stream (6.1%), drain (6.1%), peritoneum (0.9%) and cerebrospinal fluid specimens (0.9%). The distribution of the species obtained was Candida albicans (75.4%), C. glabrata (8.2%), C. tropicalis (4.8%), C. kefyr (3.4%), C. parapsilosis (2.5%), C. lusitaniae (1.9%), C. famata (1.4%), C. krusei (1.4%), and C. guilliermondii (1%). The antifungal susceptibility of the isolates to 5-fluorocytosine (5FCU), amphotericin B (AMP), nystatin (NYS), econazole (ECO), miconazole (MIC) and ketoconazole (KET) was tested …

Assessment of renal function in clinical medicine is of great importance. Various studies report that cystatin C (cysC) and \beta 2 -microglobulin are valuable markers of renal function. In this study, serum cysC and \beta 2 -microglobulin were measured in parallel with serum creatinine in a healthy population, and the characteristics of the relationship of cysC and \beta 2 -microglobulin to age and gender were compared. Serum creatinine, cysC and b2-microglobulin were measured in 119 (86 female; 33 male, 6 to 69 years old) healthy subjects. They were divided into five different age groups: group 1 (6-15 years, n = …

Determination Of Polydispersity Of A Human Colonic Mucus Glycoprotein Using Rate-Zonal Centrifugation And Laser Light-Scattering, Nurten Aksoy, John K. Sheehan
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
The colonic epithelium is coated by a visco-elastic gel, mucus that lubricates and protects the mucosa from the external environment. Mucus glycoproteins (mucins, MUCs) are major macromolecular components with MUC2 representing the major gel-forming secretory mucin. Previously we purified MUC2 from a cell culture environment with either three rounds of isopicnic centrifugation or gel filtration chromatography followed by a single round of centrifugation. In the present work, using rate-zonal centrifugation in a gradient of guanidinium chloride we fractionated this purified MUC2 and its subunits. Analyses of the fractions showed that the unreduced MUC2 molecules are quite large and polydisperse in …

Distribution Of Different Fibronectin Isoforms In The Extracellular Matrices Of Human Term Placenta, Ayşe Yasemi̇n Demi̇r Weusten
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Fibronectins are considered to be molecules that play important roles in cell migration and cell differentiation. Fibronectin molecules are thought to influence the differentiation of trophoblasts and the adhesion of these cells to maternal tissues. The aim of the present study was to analyze the distribution of fibronectin isoforms and to evaluate the differences between matrix-type fibrinoids, and other types of matrices produced by both maternal and fetal tissues. Tissue samples were collected from different sites of human term placentas. By using immunohistochemistry, the expression of fibronectin isoforms was determined and they were demonstrated by SDS-PAGE and Western blotting methods. …

The typical morphology of common bile duct strictures in chronic pancreatitis suggests a pathogenesis not of encasement, but of mural changes in the common bile duct. Cerulein, 20 µg/kg was administered to male Wistar rats in four subcutaneous doses, hourly for 3 h, and was recorded as one application. Group A served as controls and received subcutaneous saline. Group B1 received one application of Cerulein and was sacrificed after 24 h. Group B2 was similar to B1, but was sacrificed two weeks later. Group B3 was given two applications of Cerulein with an interval of two weeks and was sacrificed …

In this study, the thyroid hormone levels in sheep experimentally treated with selenium were investigated. Twelve Akkaraman sheep were used in the investigation. Selenium was given intramuscularly at doses of 0.1 (Group 1) and 0.4 mg/kg (Group 2). The blood samples were taken from the jugular vein at 1, 2, 4, 8, 24, 48, 96 and 144 hours after the administration. Serum triiodotyronine (T3), thyroxin (T4), free triiodotironine (fT3) and free thyroxin (fT4) levels were determined using a hormone autoanalyzer. In the comparison between the groups, it was shown that serum T3 levels reached the maximum levels at the 96^{th} …

In this research, the colourfullness and the relationships between colourfullness and physical characteristics in the coarse and down fibres obtained from hair goats raised in the provinces of Antalya, Artvin, Diyarbakır, İzmir, Kars and Konya in Turkey were studied. It was found that the most common colours were black (69%), white (9%) and milky brown (37%), and brown (15%) and white (14%), respectively in the coarse and down fibres for the provinces overall. The difference in fineness between the white and cream colour groups was significant (p

Postpartum anoestrus is widely known to cause infertility in buffaloes. This study was conducted to determine the problem of postpartum anoestrus using rectal palpation and milk progesterone level in 8 Murrah buffaloes calved during late spring or early summer in the Kocatepe Agricultural Research Institute, Afyon, Turkey. In addition, the pregnancy rates of experimental animals were investigated using a combined therapy of a progesterone releasing intravaginal device (PRID) and pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG). The ovaries of each buffalo were examined by rectal palpation once a week and the milk progesterone level was detected twice a week using enzyme immunoassay …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The applicability of the immunoperoxidase (IP) technique in unfixed-fresh tracheal organ cultures (TOCs) was investigated for rapid detection of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV). For this purpose, TOCs prepared from one-day-old SPF chicks were inoculated with IBV M41 strain in serial dilutions. IBV antigen detected by IP technique in TOCs 18 h postinoculation. IP staining was observed before siliostasis in all dilutions. The IP technique was also applied to detect IBV antigen in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections of TOCs inoculated with IBV M41 strain. Viral antigen was also detected in these sections. Histopathological examinations of IBV M41 infected tracheal rings showed loss …

The Tween 20-extracted antigen of the R. equi ATCC 6939 strain was used in the ELISA. Two hundred and nine (46%) of the 454 foals were found to be ELISA-positive. Optical density (OD) values of 0.3 (positive limit) or higher were detected in 43% of foals aged 30-40 …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The liver damage and obstructions of the biliary tract were evaluated ultrasonographically in experimentally bile duct ligated dogs. Seven healthy dogs of different breeds were used. The common bile duct was double ligated at the duodenal region after clinical and ultrasonographic examinations. After that, clinical examinations, biochemical analyses and examinations of the liver, gallbladder and biliary tract were done ultrasonographically over 6 weeks. All dogs were necropsied and macroscopic and histologic alterations were determined at the end of the study. It was determined that the levels of serum ALT, ALP, GGT and T. Bilirubin were (p < 0.001-0.05) statistically significantly increased after the operation in all dogs. As a result of ultrasonographic examinations, it was determined that the bile ducts and gallbladder were distended, the neck of the gallbladder was larger and more tortuous than normal, hypoechoic sludge was prominent in the gallbladder, and perivascular, multifocal hyperechoic areas appeared in the liver parenchyma toward the end of the study. These alterations were confirmed macroscopically and microscopically at the end of the autopsy in all dogs. We consider that as well as blood serum parameters, ultrasonographic examinations are useful in the early diagnosis of biliary diseases and in differentiating them from hepatic diseases.
