In this study, pastırma samples were produced using potassium nitrate and commercial starter culture (Staphylococcus carnosus + Lactobacillus pentosus). The meat for pastırma was dry cured with NaCl, glucose and saccarose together with KNO_3. The use of starter culture in pastırma production had a significant effect on counts of total aerobic mesophilic bacteria, Micrococcus/Staphylococcus and lactic acid bacteria. The maximum counts of microorganisms were found in the 2^{nd} stage of the drying process. There was no significant difference between yeast mould counts in control and starter added samples. Lysozyme (EC 3.2.1.17) is an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of \beta(1-->4) glycosidic bonds between N-acetylglucosamine (NAG) and N-acetylmuramic acid (NAM), which are present in peptidoglycan heteropolymers of the prokaryotic cell wall. The purpose of this study was the cloning and expression of the bacteriophage T4 lysozyme gene (gene e) via PCR amplification in Escherichia coli using the pUC18 and pRS416 vectors. PCR amplification is carried out by using the primers having Bam HI recognition sites at their 5' ends. In this study, the lethal chlorine concentrations (LC) and residual chlorine concentrations in water for a fouling organism, the pearl oyster Pinctada radiata (Leach, 1814) [Avicula], were investigated during May 1999-April 2000. The study was carried out under laboratory conditions at 20ºC. Acute toxicity tests were conducted under a flow through system by using continuous application of chlorine according to bioassay test methods. Test solutions were made by using an appropriate amount of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl^{-}). According to the results, the 24h-LC_{50} was 1.75 mgl^{-1} and the residual chlorine was 0.47 mgl^{-1} for LC_{50} of Pinctada radiata.

This study was carried out on 93 sheep and 92 goats which were all clinically healthy and raised in the pasture conditions in the Hatay region. Blood samples were collected from the jugular vein between June and July (1999) in Altınözü, Reyhanlı, Yayladağı, Samandağı and Dörtyol province. Serum samples were analysed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry for copper and zinc. Sodium and potassium levels were determined by flame photometry, calcium levels were quantified by Eppendorf photometry, magnesium was measured by spectrophotometry and selenium was determined by fluorometry. The aim of this research is to determine the yield and chemical composition of the caviar produce from flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus, Lin.1758) in the Sufa lagoon. Acording to the results of our research 21.98% of the fish with an average live weight of 1,243.63 ± 322.44 g and 49.11 ± 3.83 cm length contains with roe. Salting the caviar caused a weight loss of 35%. As a result of salting, the salt content of the product was raised to 4.61% and as a result of waxing this reached a maximum of 7.04%. This research was carried out to determine the effect of various milk sampling intervals and different methods on the accuracy of estimation of lactation milk yield in dairy cattle. Individual daily milk weights of 599 Holstein, Simmental and Brown Swiss lactations from the Aegean Agricultural Research Institute were used. It was assumed that test-day milk yields were obtained by regular and irregular intervals of 28 d and 56 d, with the irregular intervals having a standard deviation of 5 d. Two methods to measure target strength (TS) are introduced and compared with each other. One is the suspension method, and the other is the split-beam method. Each of them is representative of control and in situ methods, respectively. In addition, a morphological investigation of a swimbladder in a pressure tank, and the development of an instrumented package of acoustic and optical systems, are also introduced. The former is to reveal the degree of TS variation by the vertical movement of fish, and the latter is to obtain precise TS and fish behavior by the echo trace analysis method.

The distribution of ionotropic glutamate receptor subunits (GluR1-4), considered a-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isaxole propionic acid type (AMPA-type), was investigated in the rat spinal cord by immunocytochemistry. Different distributions of the AMPA-type glutamate receptor subunits were observed in the spinal cord. Immunolabelling with antibodies to both GluR1 and GluR2/3 revealed intensive staining in the dorsal horn, while staining for GluR2/3 and GluR4 revealed dense motor neurones in the ventral horn. These results suggest that in the rat spinal cord AMPA-type glutamate receptors vary in composition according to the region where they are expressed.

Carbonic anhydrase (CA) (carbonate hydrolyase: E. C. 4.2.1.1) from bovine lung was purified by a new method and characterized. The purification level was 4306-fold. The optimum temperature for maximum enzyme activity was 37.5°C. The optimum pH was 7.4, varying between 3.5 and 10.0. SDS-polyacryamide gel electrophoresis (3-10% discontinuous SDS-PAGE) showed two distinct bands for CA-IV. The molecular weights of the enzymes were found to be approximately 54.000 and 29.000, respectively. V_{max} and K_{M} values were calculated with p-nitrophenyl acetate as substrate (166.7 µmol/L*min, 5.59*10_{-2} M, respectively). In this study, 3470 livers of beef cattle slaughtered by the Ankara Meat and Fish Company were inspected. In these animals, 82 livers had telangiectasis, and the incidence of lesions was 2.3%. They were characterized grossly by single or multiple red-brown foci, generally 1 to 5 mm in diameter, and occasionally larger. They were located on the parietal surface of the lobus dexter or rarely scattered throughout the organ. Microscopically, dilated sinusoids filled with erythrocytes were observed in initial lesions; the distortion, atrophy and necrosis of hepatocytic cordons were seen in advanced cases. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of BVDV infection and existence of persistently infected (PI) cattle in the Trakya region. In total, 260 samples of leukocytes were isolated from dairy cows (65 samples) and breeding bulls (65 samples) and also from cows and bulls in slaughterhouses (65 samples from each). After two blind passages in foetal bovine kidney (FBK) cell culture, they were screened for BVDV antigen with indirect immunoperoxidase labelling. Carbohydrate compositions of apolipoprotein E (apo E) isolated from rat serum very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) and intermediate density lipoproteins (IDL) + low density lipoproteins (LDL) were analyzed and compared. Rat serum VLDL and IDL+LDL were isolated by a discontinuous density gradient ultracentrifugation for 7.9x107g.min. Following delipidization, apolipoproteins were subjected to sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) analysis. Apo E polypeptides were eluted by diffusion in 100 mM PBS buffer (pH 7) containing 0.05% SDS. The values of some materials with various mechanisms of actions on the wound healing were determined using qualitative and quantitative parameters and histopathologic findings. A total of 48 full thickness skin wounds, 4 from each of 12 rabbits, were created on their dorsal aspects. Of these wounds, 4 were allocated to group 1 (control), 24 to group 2 and 20 to group 3. The clinical and gross evaluation of wrapping the facial nerve by a lyophylized duramater (LD) or an autogenous omental graft (AOG) for nerve regeneration, after experimentally induced facial paralysis which was created by neurectomies and repaired by autogenous sural nerve grafts in dogs, were undertaken. In this study, two subjects, 1) whether Visceral Larva Migrans (VLM) takes place when T. canis larvae-infected chick livers are eaten and 2) whether any differences are present between larval distributions, clinical signs and pathological disorders of the infections caused by eggs and infected liver, were investigated in the chick-mouse model. Polysaccharidase genes from rumen bacteria were transferred to and expressed in ruminal and non-ruminal Gram-positive bacteria. The transformation efficiency and genetic stability of polysaccharidase genes in bacteria from different habitats were investigated. PCR amplification of cloned polysaccharidase genes from Escherichia coli, Lactococcus lactis, Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus sanguis and S. bovis strain 26 showed that rearrangement of plasmid and the gene fragment did not occur. The DNA band sizes from all primers agreed with the expectations of some transformants of S. bovis JB1 being rearranged. In this study conducted in İstanbul, the contamination of sandpits in children's playgrounds with Toxocara eggs was investigated. For this purpose, a total of 132 sand samples were taken from the sandpits of 63 playgrounds between November 1998 and September 1999. Toxocara eggs were found in 10 (15.9%) of 63 playgrounds. A total of 22 eggs were recovered. The average egg number per 100 g of sand was found to be 0.067 for the overall examined playgrounds and 0.44 (ranging from 0.2 to 1.2) for the contaminated ones.

The presence of Salmonella enteritidis was investigated in 123 liquid whole quail eggs. Salmonella strains were identified and sero-grouped by coagglutination test and slide agglutination test. Seven (5.69%) of 123 whole quail eggs were in group D1 and were sero-typed as Salmonella enteritidis. It was found that in phage-typing of Salmonella enteritidis, three of 7 strains were Salmonella enteritidis PT4 , two of them were PT1, one of them was PT7, and one of them was indefinite.

The purpose of this study was to compare the birth rates after transfers of microinjected hybrid mouse zygotes into hybrid CB6F1 (C57BL/6J X BALB/c) and outbred CD-1 foster mothers. One or two hours after microinjection of a \beta -actin-Gfp gene construct into the male pronucleus, hybrid mouse zygotes were transferred into CB6F1 and CD-1 foster mothers. In addition, non-microinjected hybrid zygotes were transferred into foster mothers of both strains. The aim of the study was to investigate the possibility of using great auricular nerve - facial nerve (GAN-FN) coaptation in the correction of experimentally induced facial paralysis according to clinical, histological and histomorphometrical analysis in dogs. Five mongrel dogs of different age (range 2 to 6 years) and sex (2 male and 3 female) were the study material. Facial paralysis was induced by neurectomy at the side of the facial nerve trunk passing through the stylomastoid foramen. In this study, nitroscanate (Lopatol tablets, Novartis) was tested for its efficacy against Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina and Dipylidium caninum in naturally infected dogs. Dogs that had mixed infections of cestodes and nematodes were divided into two groups: the treatment group (10 dogs) and the control group (5 dogs). Dogs in the treatment group were treated orally with a single dose of 1 tablet/10 kg of nitroscanate (50 mg/kg). The prevalence and colonization sites of Helicobacter spp. in the stomachs of dogs, and their association with gastric pathology were investigated. Scraping cytology, culture, urease test and histology were used to detect helicobacters in the stomachs of necropsied dogs. Gastric Helicobacter spp. were detected in 103 (84.4%) of 122 dogs from 1 month to 14 years of age. The uncultured spiral organisms seen in the most of stomachs were designated as H. heilmannii. A total of 83 faecal samples carrying rotavirus were used in this survey. Five different electrophoretypes were distinguished according to their migration patterns. All the rotaviruses examined in this research proved to be group A and to have short migration patterns. While local migration patterns were detected in individual herds (e.g. A, B, C, M, P and T), two different migration profiles were detected in herd K during rotavirus enteritis after a two year interval. Seafoods are very perishable, and many different methods are used for the determination of their quality. Sensory and hypoxanthine values of cold stored trout burgers, which we prepared, were determined during a 28-day period. Burgers spoiled after the 21st day of storage. The TVB-N values were still very low when the burgers spoiled and the pH values decreased during their storage. Therefore total volatile bases nitrogen and pH analyses were not useful for the determination of the quality of trout burgers. The effects of alcohol, passive smoking and alcohol+passive smoking on certain biochemical variables were investigated in mice serum. For this purpose, 72 female and 49 male Swiss albino mice were used. The animals were approximately 10 weeks old at the beginning of the experiment and their initial body weights ranged from 22 to 31 g. The effects of chromium (Cr) on egg production, egg quality, egg yolk cholesterol level and selected serum parameters of laying hens were investigated. Sixty 16-wk-old Hyline White 77 strain were randomly assigned to two groups of 30 hens each and fed either a basal diet or basal diet supplemented with 20 ppm Cr (CrCl3.6H2O). Egg and blood samples were collected at monthly intervals after the egg production reached peak level.
