During the period from December 2008 to September 2009, we examined 254 serum samples (164 in hot-dry weather and 90 in cold-dry weather) from dromedary camels distributed all over Yazd Province, in the center of Iran. IgG antibodies were assayed by the modified agglutination test (MAT) and Neospora agglutination test (NAT) using whole tachyzoites of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum, incorporating 2-mercaptoethanol, for T. gondii and N. caninum, respectively. The aim of this study was to use an empirical mass balance equation to estimate the carrying capacity of Lake Kariba, where cage culture for Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus has been practiced since 1996. The carrying capacity for the lake was estimated at 33.2 × 103 t per year using the Dillon-Rigler phosphorus budget model.

From January to December 2009, 661 fecal samples from natural cases of diarrheic calves were taken by veterinary staff from the Department of Large Animal Internal Medicine of Shiraz Veterinary School and veterinary practitioners in Fars Province, Iran. The samples were taken from 267 diarrheic calves of high-producing dairy cows (HPDCs) and 394 diarrheic calves of average-producing Holstein dairy cows (APDCs). Fecal samples were collected and submitted for the laboratory diagnosis of coronavirus antigens. Herd selection was based on geographical location and density of cattle in the region. The efficacy of blood and buffy coat smear examination, commercially available dot-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit, and nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was evaluated in the diagnosis of canine ehrlichiosis in 40 dogs exhibiting symptoms suggestive of the disease. The intracytoplasmic rickettsial organisms were seen in the smears of only 1 dog (2.5%) with an extremely low level of parasitemia. Nested PCR with 16S rRNA revealed characteristic 378 bp bands indicating positive reaction in 8 (20.0%) dogs and sera samples of 21 (52.5%) dogs revealed anti-Ehrlichia antibodies. This study was conducted on 11 animals (7 buffaloes and 4 cows) diagnosed with primary omasal impaction. In all the cases, laparorumenotomy was performed and omasal impaction was confirmed based on the consistency of the omasal contents along with an empty abomasum. Signalment, history, clinical signs, clinic-pathologic findings, and treatment were determined. Clinical examination was found to be helpful in subjective assessment of omasal impaction but could not aid in definitive diagnosis. Relationships among 30 pigeon breeds were studied using data from 31 morphological characteristics. The relationships between breeds obtained from the study were rather congruent with the classification used by fanciers groups. The average Euclidean distance between pigeon breeds was 0.93 ± 0.16 STD. The results obtained were very compatible with those described in the literature for each classificatory group. Three large, perfectly definite clusters could be observed in this tree. A cluster was formed by Balearic nonpouter breeds and the Catalan Bare Pigeon. Another cluster occupied an intermediate position and was formed by thief pouters. They shared some remarkable peculiar …

High Clinical Disturbance And Mortality In Pigeon Flocks Caused By Hadjelia Truncata Infection In Sistan, Iran, Reza Nabavi, Javad Khedri, Mehdi Jahantigh

A large number of birds in 3 pigeon flocks (containing 637 individuals) were severely affected by Hadjelia truncata. This was observed in April 2011 in Sistan District in Iran. In the affected birds, progressive weight loss, weakness, and death were observed. In the necropsy of 8 cases the gizzards were larger and softer than normal and in all of them distortion was detected. Stool examination by the Clayton Lane method revealed 72% infection among domestic pigeons. The objective of this study was to investigate the presence of mycoplasmas in the respiratory system of sheep and goat populations managed under extensive production systems. Specific culture and polymerase chain reaction techniques were performed on a total of 88 lung tissue samples and 142 nasal swabs obtained from multiple herds in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the present study, 178 blood samples from buffaloes were tested against indirect enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (I-ELISA), rose bengal plate test (RBPT), microagglutination test (MAT), modified microagglutination test (mMAT), and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to select the most suitable test for efficient and effective diagnosis of bovine brucellosis. Win Episcope 2 software was used to determine the agreement between tests (kappa values at 95% confidence interval). I-ELISA was pair compared with all the other tests. Here we present a case of terminal atrial standstill with ventricular escape rhythm associated with hyperkalemia and metabolic acidosis contributed to by diarrhea and lactate in a neonatal calf. This life-threatening arrhythmia disappeared and sinus rhythm was obtained by fluid therapy consisting of isotonic saline with NaHCO_3 and epinephrine.

Checklist Of Small Ruminant Gastrointestinal Nematodes And Their Geographical Distribution In Turkey, Feri̇de Sevi̇mli̇

This review presents a search of the literature about gastrointestinal nematodosis of small ruminants. The search was performed on 58 articles published on necropsied sheep and goats between 1937 and 2011 in Turkey. This review identified 43 nematode species belonging to sheep and goats, assessed the prevalence of infection in different regions of Turkey, and evaluated the effect of age, sex, race, nutrition, and seasonal condition. This is the first review that specifically evaluated the gastrointestinal nematodes of small ruminants for 74 annual periods in Turkey.

This study aimed to identify phenotypic and genotypic resistance profiles of bacteria isolated from soil and manure samples obtained from a farm where tetracycline and tylosin were used extensively. Samples were collected from the manure and soil, before and after manure application. All of the 151 bacteria were identified based on BLAST results. Minimum inhibitory concentrations were determined by agar dilution and E-test methods. Class-specific primers were used to amplify 6 erythromycin and 7 tetracycline resistance (Tc^r) genes for 46 tetracycline- and 18 erythromycin-resistant isolates. The aim of this study was to describe the morphology and results of treatment of an iguana’s oral abscess. A case of unilateral oral abscesses with tooth loss in a male green iguana (Iguana iguana) was presented. Gingival necrosis and a pocket of caseous yellow-gray pus were visible in the soft tissues. Some cranial teeth were found loose within the necrotic tissue. Radiographic study showed decreased bone density. Treatment of the abscess involved opening up the pus-filled abscess and manually cleaning it out. The bacteriology confirmed a culture of Pseudomonas aeruginosa sensitive to enrofloxacin, gentamicin, and chloramphenicol.

This study examined the lingual papillae of 80-day-old wild pig fetal siblings through macroscopic and light and scanning electron microscopic observations. The results revealed that fungiform papillae were located on every aspect of the tongue except the ventral surface and the center of the dorsal surface. Conical papillae were present on the dorsal surface of the root of the tongue and marginal papillae were observed on the lateral edges of the tip of the tongue. Sixty-five rats (Rattus norvegicus) and 5 mice (Mus musculus) were trapped from 8 outdoor farms and the presence of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli was not detected in any individual. Nevertheless, using the microscopic agglutination test, it was found that 20% (13/65) of rat serum samples were positive for anti-Leptospira antibodies, and DNA of pathogenic leptospires was detected in 3.07% (2/65) of the rat kidneys by real-time polymerase chain reaction. The most common infecting serovar was Castellonis (7.69%), followed by Canicola (6.15%) and Mangus (6.15%). Tetralogy of Fallot is a rare congenital heart defect; however, it is the most common cyanotic heart malformation in humans and animals. It consists of a ventricular septal defect, pulmonic stenosis, displacement of the aortic root, and hypertrophy of the right ventricle. In the present work, the biocompatibility of orthodontic devices was tested by the propagation of human osteoblasts. A different methodological approach was applied. Since the materials used in human and veterinary orthodontics (not in implantology) had been tested, osteoblasts were not implanted on the surface of the biomaterial, but have been cultured in the medium containing the products of corrosion. The effect of Chronogest-supplemented Ovsynch and Co-synch protocols on estrus synchronization, follicular development, and fertility after fixed-time insemination was investigated in goats during the breeding season. Co-synch (n = 24) and Ovsynch (n = 25) protocols were applied to nulliparous does with a body weight of more than 30 kg. The onset and duration of estrus were determined with teaser bucks. Of 64 canaries with diarrhea in Elazığ Province between May 2002 and May 2006, 18 (28.1%) had Isospora oocysts in their feces. It was determined that the oocysts, examined morphologically before and after sporulating, were Isospora canaria and Isospora sp. Among the infected animals, 8 (44.4%) were concurrently infected with both species. Total numbers of I. canaria oocysts were greater than those of Isospora sp. To investigate the differences in nostril dominance in affective disordered patients in comparison with healthy subjects. Materials and methods: A total of 26 male and 18 female bipolar I disordered inpatients, 11 male and 15 female unipolar depressed inpatients, and 30 male and 34 female healthy control subjects were evaluated. Nostril dominance was assessed by measuring nostril airflow. Nostril airflow was measured 24 times, at 30-min intervals from 08.00 hours to 20.00 hours. To validate patient responses to imatinib mesylate, which induces hematologic and cytogenetic remission and, consequently, modifies the progression of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Materials and methods: Between January 2006 and July 2009, 31 patients with chronic-phase CML were treated with imatinib therapy in the hematology unit of Atatürk University Medical Faculty Training Hospital. Imatinib treatment was begun at the standard dose of 400 mg/day, as either first-line or second-line therapy. Anthrax is a zoonotic infectious disease caused by B. anthracis. It remains as an important issue in developing countries and it is a potential threat for the world because of its use as a biological weapon. In this study, we evaluated the epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory characteristics of 44 patients with cutaneous anthrax in our region. To evaluate the effects of preoperative and intraoperative administration of intravenous meperidine as a preemptive analgesic. Materials and methods: A total of 50 patients were randomly divided into 2 groups; group P received 1 mg/kg of meperidine intravenously immediately before induction of anesthesia, and group I received the same amount of meperidine 20 min before completion of surgery. Consumption of desflurane, recovery parameters, heart rate, mean arterial pressure, sedation scores, visual analog scale (VAS) scores for pain, analgesic needs, and anesthesia-related complications were recorded for both groups. To evaluate the effect of tramadol addition to levobupivacaine in axillary plexus blockade in a prospective, randomized double-blind study. Materials and methods: A total of 60 patients scheduled to undergo hand and forearm surgery under axillary plexus blockade were randomly divided into 2 groups. Group L received 36 mL of racemic 0.5% levobupivacaine with 2 mL of saline, whereas Group LT received 2 mL (100 mg) of tramadol instead of saline. To determine the distribution of allergens and allergic symptoms according to occupation groups in those who were exposed to toluene and presented with allergic rhinitis symptoms. Materials and methods: Of the 2005 patients who were administered an allergy test with the prediagnosis of allergic rhinitis, the files of 138 patients who were exposed to toluene were analyzed retrospectively. To examine the effects of right and left stellate ganglion block (SGB) on blood pressure and the RR, QT, and QTc intervals in patients with primary Raynaud's phenomenon. To evaluate tibial pilon fractures, as well as the type of fibula fracture, and the presence of injury to the inferior tibiofibular joint. Materials and methods: The study included 42 patients (34 male, 8 female) who underwent surgery for pilon fractures and were followed up. To determine the relationship between skin prick test results and allergic symptoms and to discover which symptom or symptoms are more commonly associated with the skin prick test. Materials and methods: Of the 1462 patients with a prediagnosis of allergic rhinitis (AR) who underwent the skin prick test, 495 subjects completed the symptoms inquiry form and were included in the study.
