Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Research was conducted on 12 clinically healthy 4-year-old White Nobel goats. Renal activity examinations were carried out with the use of clearance methods where inulin was used as a testing substance to determine the level of glomerular filtration. The results allowed determination of inulin clearance, endogenic creatinine, sodium, potassium, and chloride levels. Filtered load, tubular resorption, and excretion in urine of sodium, potassium, and chlorides were marked. The research revealed diurnal variations of renal activity in goats. Most of the rhythms' acrophases occur in the phase of activeness between 1200 and 1600 hours. The resorption rhythm of potassium in the …

Comparison Of Sevoflurane And Isoflurane Effects On Cardiovascular Andrespiratory System During Spontaneous Ventilation In Angora Goats, Ali̇ Kumandaş, Ertuğrul Elma Jan 2015

Comparison Of Sevoflurane And Isoflurane Effects On Cardiovascular Andrespiratory System During Spontaneous Ventilation In Angora Goats, Ali̇ Kumandaş, Ertuğrul Elma

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Seven healthy Angora goats were used to compare the effects of isoflurane and sevoflurane on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems during anesthesia periods. Once anesthesia was induced with propofol at 5.1 ± 0.9 mg/kg, it was maintained with isoflurane at 1%-3% in the first treatment period and sevoflurane at 2%-4% in the second treatment period after a 15-day interval. Heart rates measured immediately after anesthesia induction and 5 min later were found to be statistically significant between anesthetic groups (P < 0.05). Mean blood pressure in the isoflurane group decreased (75.7 ± 7.2 to 59.8 ± 9.8 mmHg) (P < 0.05) throughout the anesthesia period. It was determined that respiratory rate in sevoflurane treatment was lower than that in isoflurane treatment. In terms of time to stand up, sevoflurane-administered animals recovered significantly faster than animals intubated with isoflurane anesthesia (13.1 ± 4.4 and 25.0 ± 8.6 min) (P < 0.05). According to cardiopulmonary values, the respiratory rate was lower in the sevoflurane-applied animals compared to that of those receiving isoflurane anesthesia, although the difference was not statistically significant, and hypercapnia were not observed in either group. Consequently, it was determined that in the Angora goat, propofol-sevoflurane anesthesia exerts lower pressure on the cardiovascular system than isoflurane anesthesia. At the same time, recovery from sevoflurane anesthesia was shorter, and therefore it can be preferred to other anesthesia agents for routine anesthesia.

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the role of apoptosis in some common liver diseases, and the utility of M30, an apoptotic serum marker, in the diagnosis of the severity of underlying hepatic injury. As is widely known, apoptosis is programmed cell death, and its deregulation results in an uncontrolled inflammatory process leading to upregulation of liver fibrogenesis. Both extrinsic and intrinsic pathways are crucial in apoptosis, and caspase cleavage of cytokeratin proteins occurs in both. Therefore, the measurement of caspase-cleaved cytokeratin fragments could be a novel method to assess the intensity of apoptotic cell numbers in epithelial …

To evaluate salivary antioxidant defense markers, their correlation with salivary glucose, and glycemic status in type II diabetes mellitus (DM). Materials and methods: The study included 53 diabetic patients and 40 healthy subjects. Salivary glucose, blood glucose, and uric acid (UA) were determined by specific enzymatic methods. Total antioxidant activity (AOA), glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and total protein were determined spectrophotometrically. Results: Salivary UA (3.12 vs. 1.89 mg/dL), GSH (47 vs. 11.92 µg/mL), and total protein (375.12 vs. 202.23 mg/dL) were significantly higher (P < 0.001; r = 0.455, 0.735, 0.498 respectively) and AOA (653.1 vs. 897.3 µmol/L) was significantly lower in the DM group (P < 0.001, r = -0.431) compared to healthy controls. Among the antioxidant enzymes, CAT was significantly lower (1214 vs. 9468.9 kat) in the DM group (P < 0.001, r = -0.886). Spearman correlation analyses within the diabetic group showed a strong positive association between salivary glucose and blood glucose (P < 0.001, r = 0.9), salivary glucose and GSH, and salivary glucose and UA. Salivary glucose showed a negative correlation with AOA and CAT (P = 0.008, r = -0.447) in the diabetic group. Conclusion: Findings of this study, showing a strong correlation between salivary glucose and blood glucose as well as changes in antioxidant components in the DM group, suggest that saliva can be used for the diagnosis and management of DM.

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: To determine whether macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) levels in patients with hepatitis B (HB) are different than in normal individuals and whether the HB surface antigen (HBs Ag) level and viral load are correlated with each other and with the two aforementioned parameters. Materials and methods: Sera were obtained from 52 chronic active HB (CAHB) patients and 33 healthy controls, and their MIF and MCP-1 levels were measured. Statistical analyses were performed. A value of P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The MIF and MCP-1 values of the control group were increased compared to those of the CAHB group. The MIF and MCP-1 levels were negatively correlated with HBs Ag levels and viral loads. The MIF and MCP-1 levels were positively correlated. The HBs Ag levels and the log10 of the viral loads were positively correlated. Conclusion: We conclude that the negative correlation of MIF and MCP-1 with viral load and HBs Ag levels may be due to T-cell deficiency, antinuclear antibody seropositivity, and/or inhibition of chemokine ligand 2 receptors by viral antigens. More studies with a greater number of subjects are needed to evaluate the potential role of MIF and MCP in CAHB.

The aim of the present study was to determine the histological structure and histochemical properties of the pancreatic ducts in the goose Anser anser. Pancreatic ducts of 6 male and 6 female geese were examined. Crossman’s triple stain and Masson’s trichrome stain were used for histological examination, and periodic acid–Schiff, alcian blue, periodic acid–Schiff/alcian blue, and aldehyde fuchsin/alcian blue stainings were performed for histochemical examination. Dorsal and ventral pancreatic ducts were found that transfer pancreatic secretion into the duodenum of the goose, and these channels were found to have a histologically similar structure. No differences were detected between male and …

A 5-year-old male dog was presented with the complaint of a chronic nonhealing wound on both hind legs. The wound occurred during a serious train accident that caused loss of both hind limbs below the hock joint. Since then, the wound did not respond to any standard treatment for up to 4 months. Again it was dressed for 15 days, but it did not show any improvement. With the consent of the owner, cell-based therapy was conducted by collecting bone marrow from the proximal anteromedial aspect of the tibia. After the application of bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) …

A group of proteins called heat shock proteins (HSPs) are synthesized during heat stress. They are expressed at high levels when exposed to stress. Polymorphism in HSPs has been reported to be associated with heat tolerance and reproductive performance in cattle. The present study aimed to investigate the polymorphisms in the coding region of the HSPA1A gene in Holstein-Friesian (HF) crossbreds and the Deoni breed of cattle. Genomic DNA was extracted from 94 animal blood samples and was subjected to polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformation polymorphism analysis, which revealed 14 band patterns in Deoni cattle and 8 band patterns in …

Toxoplasmosis is one of the most important foodborne parasitic diseases of humans. In particular, sheep muscles are significant sources of infection in the transmission of toxoplasmosis. Carnivorism is the most important transmission route for human populations. The aim of this study was to detect the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii tissue cysts in sheep meats in retail stories of Turkey. A total of 250 boneless sheep meat samples were purchased from randomly selected retail stores in different locations of Ankara and Kırıkkale provinces of Turkey. The homogenized meat samples were centrifuged with Percoll dilutions. The tissue cysts were removed by pipette …
