Impact Of B. Melitensis Rev-1 Vaccination On Brucellosis Prevalence, Adosinda Maria Coelho, Maria De Lurdes Pinto, Juan Garcia Diez, Ana Claudia Coelho

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, in the northeastern region of Portugal, previously exhibited the highest brucellosis prevalence in the entire small ruminant population of Portugal. Consequently, a vaccination program of the whole population with Brucella melitensis Rev-1 was carried out from 2001 to 2004, and further compulsory Rev-1 vaccination of 3- to 6-month-old lambs and kids was carried out between 2005 and 2007. The prevalence of brucellosis decreased by 71.42% in 2004, with a 2-fold decrease occurring from 2005 to 2007. The reduction of brucellosis prevalence was statistically significant (P < 0.001) according to flock size. By species, brucellosis prevalence decreased 14.5-fold in sheep and 5.5-fold in goats in 2004. Regarding flock constitution, it decreased by 77% for pure flocks and 73% in mixed flocks in 2004. Regarding the animals involved in production, brucellosis prevalence decreased during the 7-year period. It was concluded that Rev-1 vaccination of the whole population was effective in decreasing brucellosis prevalence. These results contribute to the scarce information available regarding the effect of Rev-1 vaccination on different characteristics of flocks. They may be used to improve the efficiency of brucellosis eradication programs within livestock management.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was undertaken to measure the effect of fattening duration (60, 80, and 100 days) on growth performance and carcass characteristics of male kids from indigenous Hair and Honamlı goat breeds reared under intensive fattening systems in Turkey. Fattening duration had a significant effect (P < 0.001) on the fattening performance and a number of carcass characteristics of kids. An interaction was detected between genotype and fattening duration for average daily gain (ADG). Hair goat kids grew at a faster rate than Honamlı kids in the 20-40 day and 40-60 day fattening periods, but they maintained relatively similar ADGs within other fattening periods. On average, over the course of the fattening trial, Honamlı kids grew at an average daily rate of 209 g/head, while Hair goat kids grew at a daily rate of 231 g/head. Dressing percentage and carcass lean and fat percentages of kids increased (P < 0.05-0.001) with slaughter age and weight for both genotypes, whereas the percentage of bone decreased (P < 0.001) with each successive fattening period. No genotypic differences were detected for a number of carcass characteristics at the time of slaughter, with the exception of relatively higher (P < 0.01) fat deposit rates within the kidney and pelvic areas for Hair kids.

Effects Of Long-Term Starvation And Refeeding On Fatty Acid Metabolism-Relatedgene Expressions In The Liver Of Zebrafish, Danio Rerio, Ayşe Ölmez, Mehtap Bayir, Chunfang Wang, Abdulkadi̇r Bayir Jan 2015

Effects Of Long-Term Starvation And Refeeding On Fatty Acid Metabolism-Relatedgene Expressions In The Liver Of Zebrafish, Danio Rerio, Ayşe Ölmez, Mehtap Bayir, Chunfang Wang, Abdulkadi̇r Bayir

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

A 70-day starvation was conducted to determine the effects of long-term starvation on whole-body polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) composition and fatty acid metabolism-related gene expression in the liver of zebrafish, Danio rerio. The starvation period was followed by a 15-day refeeding period to test recovery of both PUFA composition and gene expression levels. It was found that n-3 PUFA and arachidonic acid levels increased during starvation and returned to normal values after refeeding (P < 0.05). Expression of seven (elovl5, fads2, cpt1-β, acox1, acadvl, fabp1a, and fabp7a) of eight total genes downregulated significantly towards the end of the starvation. As a result of refeeding, gene expression of elovl5 and ppar-α returned to the normal levels. Therefore, it was concluded that, in general, mRNA expression of genes involved in fatty acid metabolism was negatively influenced by long-term starvation (70 days); there was no direct relationship between whole-body fatty acid composition and hepatic gene expressions; and 15-day refeeding was insufficient for recovery of starvation-based metabolic losses in zebrafish.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to determine the changes in serum nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA), serum ß-hydroxybutyric acid (ß-HBA), triglycerides, Ca, Na, and other metabolites (bilirubin, glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH)) in the blood of grazing, healthy goats at the time of parturition. Blood samples were taken weekly from the jugular vein of 11 goats, starting at week 2 antepartum (ap) until week 9 postpartum (pp). NEFA and ß-HBA concentrations increased from week 2 ap to 2 weeks pp. The increase in NEFA level was not significant; however, the ß-HBA levels were higher (P < 0.05) 2 weeks pp compared to the levels at 2 weeks ap. Triglycerides were recorded at maximum levels (P < 0.05) 2 weeks ap, with the lowest concentrations at 3 weeks pp. Bilirubin levels consistently increased up to 7 weeks pp, followed by a decrease. However, these changes were not significant. Similarly, GLDH activities increased until week 8 pp. A significant difference (P < 0.05) was recorded between the 1st week and 8th week pp. Ca and Na levels were lower during the 1st week pp and increased at 3 weeks pp. The results show that there are characteristic alterations of some metabolic blood parameters in goats around the time of parturition, which may be related to physiological changes.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study assessed the effects of cellulase, xylanase, and their mixture (1:1, v/v) on in vitro rumen fermentation of five mixed rations with different maize silage (F) to concentrate (C) ratios (0F:100C, 25F:75C, 50F:50C, 75F:25C, 100F:0C). Samples were incubated using rumen inoculum from Brown Swiss cows fed ad libitum a total mixed ration of concentrate and alfalfa hay (1:1). Gas production (GP) was recorded after 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 24, 36, 48, and 72 h of incubation. Interaction effects (P < 0.0001) were observed between type of ration and enzyme for discrete lag time prior to GP. Ration type affected asymptotic GP (linear and quadratic, P < 0.0001) and in vitro GP at 24 h onward. Moreover, rations affected pH (linear and quadratic, P < 0.0001), dry matter degradability (quadratic, P = 0.05), metabolizable energy (linear, P = 0.038), short-chain fatty acids (linear, P = 0.0005), gas yield from truly digested dry matter at 24 h (linear, P = 0.0026), and microbial crude protein yield (linear, P = 0.0264). The most effective rations for in vitro GP during different times differed between different measured parameters. Enzyme administration was more effective when the ratio of maize silage was increased.

This study aimed to determine the time taken for Escherichia coli O157:H7 to adapt to different types of acids and the effect of acid adaptation on the survival level of E. coli O157:H7 in sucuk (Turkish-type fermented sausage). E. coli O157:H7 cells were adapted to acids in a tryptic soy broth (TSB) set to pH 5.5 for 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-h periods using hydrochloric, acetic, lactic, and citric acid. The acid tolerance of acid-adapted and nontreated cells was determined in TSB of pH 3.5 and then acid-adapted and nontreated E. coli O157:H7 (105 CFU/g) was added to sucuk. In …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The present study was conducted to evaluate the storage stability of aerobically packaged extended dehydrated chicken meat rings during ambient storage at 30 ± 2 °C. Extended dehydrated chicken meat rings were prepared by utilizing spent hen meat (80%), an optimized level of rice flour, refined wheat flour, potato starch, spice mix, common salt, and sodium tripolyphosphate. The control product was prepared in a similar manner except that rice flour was substituted by an equal quantity of spent hen meat. The products were aerobically packaged in low-density polyethylene (LDPE) pouches and analyzed for physicochemical, microbiological, and sensory characteristics at regular …

Low-Field Magnetic Resonance Anatomic Features Of The Neonatalfoal Thorax: An Ex Vivo Study, Alberto Arencibia, José Ángel Sandoval, Francisco Gil, José Raduán Jaber, Diego Blanco, Andrés Diz, José María Vázquez

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The purpose of this study was to describe the normal appearance of the bony and soft tissue structures of the thorax of neonatal foals by low-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and the use of anatomical dissections and gross sections. Three purebred Spanish neonatal foals that died for medical reasons unrelated to thoracic disease were used to obtain T1- and T2-weighted MR images using a magnet of 0.2 Tesla. Anatomic structures on the MR images were evaluated according to characteristics of signal intensity of the different organic tissues. The bones, different associated muscles, diaphragm, trachea, main bronchi, lungs, esophagus, heart chambers, …

Multiple-Locus Variable Number Of Tandem Repeat Analysis Assay As A Tool For The Epidemiological Study Of Brucella Canis In Korea, Kichan Lee, Ji-Yeon Kim, Sung-Il Kang, Hyang Keun Lee, Suk-Chan Jung, Moon Her

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Multiple-locus variable number of tandem repeats analysis (MLVA) is useful for epidemiological investigations. In this study, MLVA-18 was used to assess the genetic and epidemiological relationships of Brucella canis isolates among a domestic dog and dogs from two breeding farms. MLVA-18 assay showed variation in copy numbers in 6 of the 18 loci. Interestingly, the YJ02-1 strain isolated from the pet dog from Yangju-si showed only one tandem repeat change in Bruce 09 locus as compared with that of NYJ-1 strain isolated from a dog from the Namyangju-si farm. The two strains were shown to have originated from the same …
