Background/aim: Fetuin-A, a circulating inhibitor of calcification, is a marker of inflammatory-nutritional state. We evaluated the association between serum fetuin-A levels and vascular calcification, intima-media thickness, and nutritional and inflammatory markers in different stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Materials and methods: CKD patients were sampled for calcium-phosphate parameters and nutritional and inflammatory markers [highly sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP)], and serum fetuin-A levels. Background/aim: This study aimed to evaluate the risk factors of patients colonized with carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE).Materials and methods: The study was conducted between January 2010 and March 2016. Background/aim: Based on our previous in vitro study with multilamellar liposomal bupivacaine (MLB) versus bupivacaine alone in artificial cerebrospinal fluid, we aimed to investigate in vivo antinociceptive effect of intrathecal MLB by determining tail flick latency (TFL) time after thermal stimulation in rats. Background/aim: To assess the efficacy and side effects of concurrent weekly chemotherapy and radiotherapy with simultaneous integrated boost (SIB) technique for nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC). Materials and methods: A total of 51 consecutive patients with diagnosis of NPC were treated between February 2010 and December 2015. The median dose for PTV70 (range: 60-82) was given in 33 fractions (range: 31-35). Forty-five of the patients received concomitant weekly chemotherapy between 3-7 cycles (median 6). Eleven patients received neoadjuvant and thirty-nine patients received adjuvant chemotherapy. Background/aim: This study aimed to reveal the optimum recording time of routine electroencephalogram (EEG) for adults with epilepsy.Materials and methods: In this clinical observational study we investigated features of paroxysms that emerged in EEGs recorded for 45 min in adults with epilepsy.Results: Paroxysms were detected in 38.14% of 97 patients. The probability of occurrence of paroxysm during the first 10 min was found to be statistically significantly low in comparison to the first 30 and 45 min (respectively P = 0.004, P = 0.0001). Background/aim: We aimed to evaluate the utility of thyroid imaging reporting and data system (TI-RADS) in prediction of malignancy in thyroid nodules with persistent nondiagnostic (ND) cytology. Materials and methods: A total of 246 thyroid nodules which were surgically removed and had at least two fine-needle aspirations (FNAs) with ND cytology were included in this study. Ultrasonography features and TI-RADS scores were recorded. Results: Of 246 nodules, 218 (88.6%) had benign and 28 (11.4%) had malignant final histopathology. Background/aim: Sinonasal polyposis is a complex chronic disease displaying contributions from multiple genetic and environmental factors. In this study, we analyzed possible genetic factors that increase susceptibility to this widespread inflammatory disease. Background/aim: To compare outcomes of canal wall up (CWU) and canal wall down (CWD) techniques in the treatment of middle ear cholesteatoma.Materials and methods: Medical records of 76 patients who had a primary surgery due to middle ear cholesteatoma between July 2015 and November 2017 were reviewed retrospectively. Hearing thresholds, speech discrimination scores (SDS), recurrences, and revision surgeries of CWU and CWD surgeries were compared. Results: Of 76 cholesteatoma cases, 40 (52.6%) had a CWU and 36 (47.4%) had a CWD operation.
