BACKGROUND: Phthalates are used as plasticizers in the manufacturing of flexible, plastic medical products. Patients can be subjected to high phthalate exposure through contact with plastic medical devices. We aimed to investigate the cardiac safety and biocompatibility of mono-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (MEHP), a phthalate with documented exposure in intensive care patients.

METHODS: Optical mapping of transmembrane voltage and pacing studies were performed on isolated, Langendorff-perfused rat hearts to assess cardiac electrophysiology after MEHP exposure compared with controls. MEHP dose was chosen based on reported blood concentrations after an exchange transfusion procedure.

Riboswitches are conformationally dynamic RNAs that regulate gene expression by binding specific small molecules. ZTP riboswitches bind the purine-biosynthetic intermediate 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide riboside 5'-monophosphate (ZMP) and its triphosphorylated form (ZTP). Ligand binding to this riboswitch ultimately upregulates genes involved in folate and purine metabolism. Using an X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL), the room-temperature structure of the Fusobacterium ulcerans ZTP riboswitch bound to ZMP has now been determined at 4.1 Å resolution. This model, which was refined against a data set from ∼750 diffraction images (each from a single crystal), was found to be consistent with that previously obtained from data collected at …

Objectives: This study was to determine whether using telehealth education in conjunction with standard care compared to standard care only, could increase self-efficacy scores and knowledge for adults with diabetes.

Inadequately controlled acute pain is a problem for hospitalized patients. Non-pharmacological pain management interventions (NPPMIs) are recommended but underutilized. Nurse-directed lavender aromatherapy is a feasible and effective NPPMI. Patients at a community hospital, including its surgical-orthopedic unit, reported lower patient pain management experience scores than the average score of Magnet Recognition status hospitals. The community hospital planned to improve pain management by implementing nurse-directed lavender aromatherapy. The purpose of this evidence-based practice project was to fortify the hospital’s nurse-directed lavender aromatherapy implementation with change agents. A logic model guided implementation. The experience of workplace violence is demoralizing, resulting in low job satisfaction, decrease productivity, physical injury, and potential Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (Phillips, 2016; Howerton & Mentes, 2010). Millions of dollars in grants are awarded annually through the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). This study examined the impact of the funding structure on program implementation, both for current program periods and over time. A dual-methods survey was sent to recipients of 2018 grants for three programs to identify any modifications made to the planned programs due the project period length and potentially unreliable funding. Anticipated results are that grant recipients with the shortest project periods will be more likely to have made program modifications due to project length, and organizations that have received VAWA grants over multiple years …

Fish and wildlife are often used as sentinels for human health. This systematic review examines one aspect of wildlife health, intersex (both ovarian and testicular tissue) animals and their prevalence or severity near Superfund sites (EPA designated toxic waste sites). The body of evidence demonstrates some evidence of this indicator and more research is needed, specifically a meta-analysis that is outside the scope of this study.

Beverages containing low-calories sweeteners (LCSB) are used as alternatives to sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), yet their effects on the overall diet and effectiveness for weight management are unclear. The objective of this analysis was to examine energy and macronutrient intake among children who report LCSB and SSB consumption. The findings of this analysis challenge the utility of LCSB consumption as a strategy for weight management in children.

Methods used to explore the research question included a retrospective analysis of children admitted to the ICU of the MAX Saket Superspecialty Hospital between March 1, 2013 and May 2018 in order to identify those patients with an oncologic condition who were admitted to an ICU. PURPOSE. To understand the attitudes and perceptions of therapists towards animal assisted therapy (AAT) and towards the barriers and facilitators of implementing AAT into practice. METHOD. This descriptive qualitative studied consisted of ten semi-structured interviews with rehabilitation therapists that were coded for common themes. Data from two Likert-scale questions were analyzed using descriptive statistics. RESULTS. Eight themes emerged from the data including therapists’ attitudes towards animal assisted therapy and their own competence, three core benefits of animal assisted therapy that they identified (increased patient participation, positive emotional/social influence, and contribution to patient-centered goals), and three main barriers towards implementation (scheduling/operations, …

A critical analysis of chronic disease among Latino immigrants demonstrates the interplay between the individual, socioeconomic, and pathophysiological mediators of disease. To identify the major factors involved, a conceptual framework was developed to explain the relationship between Latino immigration to the US and the manifestation of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Marijuana is one of the most common substances used in the United States with more men utilizing marijuana compared to women. The effects of marijuana on the brain are well known, however, there is limited research on its effects on human sperm parameters. We examined the association between THC and human sperm parameters in participants in the Washington D.C. area. Our preliminary results suggested that THC was associated with low sperm morphology.

This study aims to investigate the association between LCSB consumption and diet quality in children and adolescents, and to compare the diet quality of LCSB consumers with that of water consumers, consumers, or combined consumers of both LCSBs+SSBs. Dietary data collected from children and adolescents enrolled in The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2016 were used to assess diet quality using the Healthy Eating Index (HEI-2015) total and subcomponent scores. Consumption of LCSBs or SSB+LCSBs does not appear to improve diet quality compared to water. These findings reinforce recommendations that SSBs should be replaced with water rather than …

Effects of long-term alcohol consumption have not been well studied in populations with diabetes, though regular alcohol consumption is common among American adults and it is estimated that at least 10% of Americans have diabetes. Individuals living with diabetes who are heavy alcohol consumers may be at heightened risk for diabetic complications. Using the well-phenotyped Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) cohort of 1,246 adult subjects with type 1 diabetes, a secondary analysis was conducted to determine if relationships exist between alcohol consumption and nephropathy, retinopathy, and neuropathy at baseline, follow-up year 5, and DCCT closeout. This systematic literature review explores whether isoprene emission rates from common tree species would be exacerbated in a warming world. When isoprene reacts with other pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides, tropospheric ozone is formed. Ozone is harmful to human health and is shown to decrease lung function among many other negative respiratory effects. If the rates of emissions continue at their current levels, there may be increased rates of asthma-related ED visits and respiratory diseases among the general population.
