The Gay Nineties: Oscar Wilde Reconsidered, Frederick J. Spencer Jan 1981

The Gay Nineties: Oscar Wilde Reconsidered, Frederick J. Spencer

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Sex and hypocrisy have always been bedmates, but never more than in Victorian England. In the “Gay Nineties” promiscuity was widely accepted in all social classes, although the aristocracy hid its lust behind a strict code of propriety. Country house parties catered to infidelities with the approval of the Prince of Wales, himself a notorious womanizer.

Changing Concepts Of Cancer Biology, Diagnosis And Treatment, Robert N. Taub

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Cancer is the number two killer in the United State and will probably account for some 400,000 deaths in 1982. The lung has now achieved the dubious distinction of being the most common site of cancer in men and causes the most deaths. Cancer of the colon and rectum is the second most common cancer in both males and females combined, whereas carcinoma of the breast and uterus predominate in women.

Breast Cancer: An Update, Wade K. Smith Jan 1981

Breast Cancer: An Update, Wade K. Smith

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Breast cancer comprises approximately 13.9% of all cases of malignancy in both sexes and 19% in women, in whom it is the commonest form of cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that 110,000 women developed breast cancer in 1981, and some 37,100 deaths from the disease occurred. The five-year survival rate has been improving over the past 40 years as shown in Table 1, but patients remain in risk of recurrence indefinitely and survival for ten years is generally accepted as the minimal time period necessary to establish the validity of new therapies.

Abstract

We studied two phases of cortisol feedback suppression of ACTH in nine patients who had had adrenalectomy for Cushing's disease. Four had been treated by adrenalectomy alone and presumably had ACTH-secreting pituitary tumors. Five others were studied two or more years after transsphenoidal removal of an ACTH-secreting microadenoma. In both groups, cortisol-ACTH feedback during the first 30 minutes of cortisol infusion was abnormal; plasma ACTH fell only 2.7±2.6 per cent (mean ±S.E.), as compared with 28.0±10.1 per cent in five hypoadrenal controls (P<0.01). The fall in ACTH during the second phase of cortisol infusion was similar in the patients and the controls. Cyproheptadine corrected the feedback abnormality occurring during the first phase in both groups of patients with Cushing's disease; ACTH fell by 24.4±4.8 per cent (P<0.005). Persistence of a cortisol-ACTH feedback abnormality after removal of the pituitary tumor in Cushing's disease, as well as the correction by cyproheptadine, suggests that higher centers have a role in the pathophysiology of Cushing's disease. Colonial Cultivation And Concoctions, Sara Jones Gomberg Jan 1981

Colonial Cultivation And Concoctions, Sara Jones Gomberg

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Have you ever wondered how to increase the value of your property? One way would be to include a well-cultivated herb garden, that is if you were a seventeenth-century colonist. Not only were the herbs much sought after for their culinary uses but also for their medicinal properties. Today’s medical library may not include a collection of botany books, yet botanical knowledge was a large part of early medical training and the mainstay of the “cavalier concoctions” used by colonists for medical treatment.

Recent Advances In Gastorintestinal Cancer, Galen L. Wampler Jan 1981

Recent Advances In Gastorintestinal Cancer, Galen L. Wampler

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Colorectal carcinoma accounts for the majority of all gastrointestinal cancers and is the second leading site of cancer, excluding skin cancers, in overall incidence in the United States. Cancer of the stomach, although decreasing in frequency is still an important cause of morbidity and mortality. Unfortunately, data from large numbers of patients such as can be found in Cancer Patient Survival Report No. 5 show only very modest increases in survival for patients with these diseases in recent years.

Oxidation Of Native And Modified Hemoglobin And Myoglobin By Sodium Nitrate. Effect Of Inositol Hexaphosphate, Ali Mansouri Jan 1981

Oxidation Of Native And Modified Hemoglobin And Myoglobin By Sodium Nitrate. Effect Of Inositol Hexaphosphate, Ali Mansouri

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Native and modified hemoglobin, myoglobin and a and phemoglobin subunits were oxidized by sodium nitrite at pH 6. The experiments were carried out under oxy and deoxy conditions with and without inositol hexaphosphate (IHP). It is shown (a) that under oxy condition low concentration of IHP inhibits the oxidation of native hemoglobin only. However, high concentration of IHP inhibits the oxidation of both myoglobin and modified hemoglobin (digested or 0-93-SH groups blocked). This inhibition is partially counteracted by high oxygen pressure, (b) Under deoxy condition the oxidation rates of all hemeproteins studied are significantly faster than that of native hemoglobin. …

Injuries To Birds Of Prey Caught In Leghold Traps, Katherine Durham Jan 1981

Injuries To Birds Of Prey Caught In Leghold Traps, Katherine Durham

International Journal for the Study of Animal Problems

One hundred and seventy-three raptors, including 32 Bald Eagles, have been treated for trapping injuries at the University of Minnesota Raptor Research and Rehabilitation Program since 1972. These birds were primarily caught in "open" bait leghold sets incidental to furbearer trapping in the Minnesota region. The differential outcome of the injuries concerning crippling or mortality is presented for large versus small raptors, toe versus leg injuries, and leg fracture versus soft tissue damage only. There is only limited potential for mitigating the effects of trapping injuries.

The Psychology Of Euthanizing Animals: The Emotional Components, Charles E. Owens, Ricky Davis, Bill Hurt Smith Jan 1981

The Psychology Of Euthanizing Animals: The Emotional Components, Charles E. Owens, Ricky Davis, Bill Hurt Smith

Human and Animal Bonding Collection

The emotional effects of euthanizing unwanted animals on professional animal control personnel are examined using written statements of and discussions among twenty-six euthanasia technicians at a workshop during a national session of the Animal Control Academy (Tuscaloosa, AL]. Emotional conflicts arise .in significant part from the dilemma that the same public which is responsible for the problem of unwanted animals also has a markedly negative perception of euthanasia, and by extension, of those who perform euthanasia. During discussions, the euthanasia technicians revealed a variety of strategies for coping with feelings of isolation, alienation and sorrow. These included intellectualization, avoidance of …
