Mobbing Calls Of The Phainopepla, Daniel W. Leger, Laura F. Carroll Jan 1981

Mobbing Calls Of The Phainopepla, Daniel W. Leger, Laura F. Carroll

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

When mobbing potential predators, male Phainopeplas (Phainopepla nitens) utter smoothly upswept vocalizations, unlike the harsh, staccato mobbing calls of other birds and mammals. A Phainopepla repeats this call as it approaches the bottom of its diving arc over the predator. We suggest that these calls do not serve to attract additional mobbers to the scene. Rather, they appear to emphasize the diving attacks directed toward the predator.

The necessity for nutrition education of the patient is becoming increasingly important in the health care system. This kind of education can aid the patient to select and practice a more desirable nutritional behavior in order to produce a favorable change in his health status. The dietitian's role in health care education is the application of nutritional knowledge to the individual situation of the patient. A dietitian must first establish rapport with the patient through verbal and non-verbal communication. He or she must be able to understand others' feelings and be warm, friendly, and put the patient at ease. The …

Mental Health Status Of Vietnamese Refugees In Utah County, Utah, David A. Acree

Theses and Dissertations

This study attempted to measure mental health status of Vietnamese refugees in Utah County, Utah. The test instrument used was the Cornell Medical Index (CMI). Two subproblems were considered: First, to see if refugee complaints on the CMI were predominantly physiological or psychological. Second, to see if there was a relationship between CMI scores and a related list of demographic variables.

Results showed the mean CMI score for the sample under study was well above the suggested score indicative of possible psychological dysfunction. For 80% of participants, psychological complaints were predominant over physical complaints. The only variables showing a relationship …

The Development Of An Assessment Form To Screen Preschool Children For Nutritional Referral, Donna Bond Phillips Jan 1981

The Development Of An Assessment Form To Screen Preschool Children For Nutritional Referral, Donna Bond Phillips

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The Ten State Nutrition Survey (1968-1972) included West Virginia as a participant and provided data on the nutritional status of various age groups including preschool children. Information from biochemical tests, anthropometric measurements and a 24-hour dietary recall indicated that a significant number of children in West Virginia and the United States are malnourished or at nutritional risk. For this reason it is essential that nutritional evaluation of children be carried out during physical examinations. However, it may not be necessary for the evaluation to be completed by a nutritionist.

The Relationship Between Self-Concept And Locus Of Control In Physically Abused Women, Betsy Wright Shires Jan 1981

The Relationship Between Self-Concept And Locus Of Control In Physically Abused Women, Betsy Wright Shires

Theses and Dissertations

History can provide some clues concerning the physical abuse of women by men. Beginning in biblical times, women were viewed as the property of men (Steinmetz, 1977). Until 1824 by law, a man was allowed to strike his wife if provoked (Bell, 1977). Under the law, some states still grant "spouse immunity" in cases of assault and battery, where married couples are involved. The focus of this research was to examine the problem of wife abuse through the perspective of social learning theory. Using Roy's theory of adaptation (Roy, 1976), the investigator also examined the area of self-concept as it related …

In Vitro Percutaneous Penetration Of Methotrexate, Rajaram Vaidyanathan Jan 1981

In Vitro Percutaneous Penetration Of Methotrexate, Rajaram Vaidyanathan

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This research project was designed to investigate the effects of various physical and chemical parameters on percutaneous penetration of methotrexate. The potential of propylene glycol in water as a vehicle for topical delivery of methotrexate has been examined. A detailed examination of solubility, partition coefficient and pH parameters in the range of 2 to 6 pH units has been conducted with the goal of correlating their effects on skin penetration of methotrexate. The importance of physiochemical parameters such as solubility and partition coefficient and their aid in the development of a suitable delivery system for topical application has been explained. …

An Epidemiologic Study Of Toxoplasmosis In Pregnant Women, Joyce Moell Matzen Jan 1981

An Epidemiologic Study Of Toxoplasmosis In Pregnant Women, Joyce Moell Matzen

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Life Cycle and Transmission

Toxoplasmosis is a disease produced by infection with the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii, an intracellular parasite which was first isolated from the North African rodent, Cyterodactylus gondii, in 1908. Since that time, this organism has been shown to have worldwide distribution and is probably the most common parasite of mammals, birds and reptiles (Remington., 1960). In 1965, Hutchinson described toxoplasma oocysts in cat feces, but it was not until 1970 that the life cycle of the organism was disclosed. The felidae represent the primary host for toxoplasma and are the only animals known to harbor the intestinal …
