Background: Pancreatic cancer (PC) is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Reported risk factors for PC include: advancing age, a family history of PC, high-risk inherited syndromes, cigarette smoking, exposure to occupational and environmental carcinogens, African-American race, high fat/high cholesterol diet, obesity, chronic pancreatitis, and diabetes mellitus.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to characterize one of the largest national registries of familial PC (FPC) and sporadic PC (SPC), focusing on demographics, clinical factors, self-reported environmental and occupational lifetime exposures and survival status.

The Global Fund and PEFPAR have increased resources for preventing, treating, and caring for HIV/AIDS and dramatically changed the ways in which the HIV/AIDS epidemic is addressed internationally. While attention often focuses on the roles of government and health workers, national civil society organizations (CSOs) and local communities are gaining recognition and key roles to play in responding to HIV/AIDS in many countries. For CSOs and communities, however, accessing Global Fund and PEPFAR resources can be challenging given these mechanisms’ technical, financial, and programmatic requirements. In 2005, the International Honors Program, a longstanding organization that runs comparative study abroad programs, launched its “Health and Community” (HC) Program. The program is offered to upper-level undergraduates from across the US and from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds. It travels to four countries in one semester and uses lectures, site visits, case study research and homestay experiences to engage students in critical and comparative thinking about health and illness at both the global and community levels. Language barriers in health care are a growing concern for patients and health care providers. According to the 2000 U. S. Census, there is an increasing number of people who spoke a language other than English at home. This number increased from 14 percent (31.8 million) in 1990 to 18 percent (47 million) in 2000 (Shin & Bruno, 2003). Studies have shown that patients with limited English proficiency have less access to care, poorer adherence to treatment regimens and consequently contribute to increased health disparities. The Ithaka Report 2006 investigated trends in the valuation of library functions by faculty. Faculty placed high values on library functions as purchaser and archive even as the valuation of information gateway declined. This poster demonstrates an effort toward expanding the archive function of a hospital library. We will describe our pilot program to digitize historical documents and photographs.

This program took place in Gales Point, a rural, underserved community in Belize. Impact students provided medical, dental and public health services to the community in an interdisciplinary service-learning format. As Master of Public Health students, Molly and Jordan directed health education initiatives and served on the Leadership Team for the program. Service Project Purpose: We identified dentists in the Central District Health Department region who perform fluoride varnish on underserved children aged 3 and under. The information was formatted into a usable database, separated by zip code. A map, identifying locations of those dentists in District 4, was created. Learning goals: Apply basic concepts of population-focused practice to client situations, and perform targeted community assessments centered on an identified need of an agency working with a population. Implement short-term interventions and make recommendations for short and long-range goals and interventions for the agency/population.

Researchers’ focused examination of Latino adolescents’ cultural values and sexual activity has yielded questions regarding the cultural- and gender-specific attitudes and practices of these youth (Deardorff, Tschann, & Flores, 2008). Cultural values include family-related variables such as different aspects of familism, parent-adolescent communication, and parental monitoring, which have been found to decrease adolescents’ engagement in other negative activities such as aggressive behavior, (Dishion & McMahon, 1998), substance use (Estrada, Rabow, & Watts, 1982), and delinquency (Clark & Shields, 1997). Reports on rates of PTSD among women receiving treatment for substance use disorders (SUDs) ranges from 20% to as much as 59%. Research however has shown that fewer than half of women with SUDs will receive treatment that addresses their PTSD symptoms. Research over the past three decades has shown an increased interest in individuals diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) using group psychotherapy. However, group psychotherapy approaches for co-occurring PTSD and substance use disorders are not as well developed. Faculty and students worked closely with Gales Point villagers to gain an insight into the use of Southern Lagoon. The objective of the study was to assess fecal coliform levels in Southern lagoon, its primary and secondary contact use by villagers and its potential impact on health. Study methodology involved collection of water samples, both near shore and offshore, in the lagoon and incubating them using ColiQuant EZ method approved by EPA. It is vital that undergraduate medical students demonstrate competency in clinical skills upon graduation. To confidently state that students are competent in these skills, medical schools must assess students using tools that provide an accurate measure of their abilities. As with many medical schools, the School of Medicine at the University of Notre Dame Australia uses the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). Research findings strongly support the OSCE as a reliable and valid measure of students’ clinical competence. Objectives: The purpose of this presentation is to describe a comprehensive evaluation undertaken to study the feasibility of Fitwits MD, an intervention designed to assist primary care physicians to increase health fluency and affect wellness choices of children and their families. Childhood obesity is a growing epidemic but there are few if any successful interventions to alter the course of childhood obesity. The intervention was created through the use of participatory design.

Belize is a country in Central America, formerly British Honduras, located south of Mexico and east of Guatemala on the Yucatan Peninsula.
