Neuraxial labor analgesia for vaginal delivery or cesarean section is performed in more than 71% of women in the United States. Postdural puncture headache(PDPH) is a relatively common complication of neuraxial anesthesia. Epidural blood patch (EBP) is considered the gold standard treatment, and although EBP is a highly effective intervention, it is not without risk. There is growing evidence that less invasive alternative treatments, such as combined use of atropine and neostigmine have effectively relieved PDPH where traditional, conservative methods have failed. Research opportunity targeted for freshmen and sophomores through the SEA-PHAGES program. The goal of the research is to discover new bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria) to help combat antibiotic resistance. Phage therapy is a promising alternative to conventional antibiotics. Phages have also been widely used in the food industry to prevent microbial growth on certain foods and are currently being explored as a method for bioremediation of oil spills and wastewater treatment.

From May 9, 2022 till July 29, 2022, I served as a Research Intern at Pfizer. Specifically, I worked in the Vaccine Research and Development Sector in the High Throughput Clinical Immunoassays and Diagnostics Group (HCID). In this group, I was responsible for Phase 3 testing of clinical trial material for the Covid-19 Vaccine. Over this time, I learned a great deal about the process of vaccine production from start to finish. Additionally, I was able to make numerous connections. This is definitely an experience I would recommend to others.

The purpose of this capstone project was to reduce 30-day readmissions of patients into the acute care setting by developing, enhancing, and implementing education materials for patients and their caregivers during occupational therapy treatment sessions. Patients who experience unplanned readmissions into acute care within 30 days are subjected to disruption in occupations, functional decline, occupational deprivation, and role strain and stress on caregivers and families. All patients with occupational therapy orders from a physician that matched certain criteria received this treatment. Purpose/Objective: Characterize rigorously the preictal period in epilepsy patients to improve the development of seizure prediction techniques. Background/Rationale: 30% of epilepsy patients are not well-controlled on medications and would benefit immensely from reliable seizure prediction. Methods/Methodology: Computational model consisting of in-silico Hodgkin-Huxley neurons arranged in a small-world topology using the Watts-Strogatz algorithm is used to generate synthetic electrocorticographic (ECoG) signals. ECoG data from 18 epilepsy patients is used to validate the model. Unsupervised machine learning is used with both patient and synthetic data to identify potential electrophysiologic biomarkers of the preictal period. The present capstone project and experience aimed to develop and implement a 12-week program of social skills peer groups for school-aged children with autism at an outpatient pediatric therapy clinic. The program consisted of weekly peer group sessions targeting a range of social skill topics, such as emotional regulation, conversation skills, and collaborative play. The purpose of the Capstone experience was to develop and implement a five-week peer-led building resilience and social-emotional skills training program at a public high school. This program addressed high school students' knowledge, skills, and attitudes regarding resources, social-emotional skills, and resilience. A questionnaire was administered pre and post-program to measure effectiveness. The results indicated an increase in scores, demonstrating a clearer understanding in all three areas.

The Parker Place is a pediatric endocrinology and lifestyle management facility located in Annapolis, Maryland. Interprofessional education (IPE) is defined by AOTA (2015) as an “occasion by which students from two or more professions learn about, from, and with each other to improve collaboration and quality of care”. IPE is closely related to and often overlaps with interprofessional collaboration (IPC) within healthcare settings. IPC “occurs when multiple health workers from different professional backgrounds work together with patients, families, [caregivers], and communities to deliver the highest quality of care” (World Health Organization [WHO], 2010, p. 7). The overall aim of IPE is to promote and develop effective IPC thereby improving patient outcomes (Khan, 2016).

Hypothesis and Objective: Genes participating in the notch signaling pathway are influenced by exposure to high nitrous oxide (HNO) levels. Notch signaling pathway genes are responsible for regulating cell fate, differentiation, and apoptosis. Dysregulation of these genes can contribute to tumorigenesis. Alterations in the expression of these genes in MCF7 breast cancer cells could help determine the effects of the notch signaling pathway on tumorigenesis as a result of exposure to nitrous oxide.

Methods: Samples of cDNA from MCF7 and MCF7-HNO cells were used in DNA microarray analysis. Qualifying genes of interest provided a p value < .05. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were defined and categorized using the Gene Oncology Uniprot (GO) Molecular Function database. These cells were further analyzed using a proprietary bioinformatics analysis created by our laboratory.

This is an enriching experience for undergraduate students, giving them a clinical and hands on experience in the field of Optometry. Students will have the opportunity to participate in research, see participants, shadow optometrists, engage in new studies, and possibly present their research at the end of their second semester. Students will work under a health professional at HPD and first observe their work along with the work of the interns before them to get familiar with the position.
