MPNSTs are rare malignancies that are classically associated with pre-existing plexiform neurofibromas in neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) patients, but also occur in association with radiation as well as sporadically in patients with no known risk factors. The typical presentation of sporadic MPNST is a new painless enlarging mass. The typical presentation of MPNST in an NF-1 patient is rapid enlargement or new onset of pain associated with a pre-existing plexiform neurofibroma. Although both MPNST and benign neurofibromas share in common the absence of neurofibromin function due to loss of both NF-1 alleles, malignant transformation to MPNST requires several additional aberrations, …

Baystate Health is a teaching hospital located in Springfield, MA. Our city’s population is 52% White; 22% Black; 39% Hispanic (regardless of race). Nearly 24% of our families speak Spanish at home. Poverty rates are 27%, as compared with 10% statewide. These populations are less likely to use the internet to find health information. The Dept of Health & Human Services draws a correlation between internet-based information seeking and the status of people experiencing disease, finding inverse relationships between internet use and incidence of asthma, diabetes, heart disease and other conditions. The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) was designed for use in a wide range of clinical environments with staff that had no special training (Teasdale and Jennett 1974). Evidence (Waterhouse 2007 and 2008) suggests however that there are ongoing problems with the use of the GCS assessment, and the impact that this might have on patient outcome is unknown. Variations in practice have been found in all areas, including the neurological specialties wards, however the skill level of nursing staff in non neurological areas is concerning with inconsistency in practice.

The goal of this study was to analyze sugar-sweetened beverage tax policy as one strategy to fight America’s obesity epidemic. Obesity is an enormous problem that plagues individuals worldwide. The prevalence of obesity is high in this country, exceeding 25% in 33 states. In Pennsylvania in 2009, 27.7% of adults were labeled as obese. Additionally, there are many more Philadelphians who are overweight or obese (900,000) than who are at a healthy weight (600,000). Obesity is extremely complex and has several causes. Diabetes is a serious public health problem in the United States and in Philadelphia. A 2007 CDC report stated that 7.8% in the US and 10.4% in Philadelphia had diabetes. While the key to managing one’s diabetes and lowering the risk of its adverse health outcomes is adherence to diabetes management guidelines, the prevalence of these behaviors among adult diabetics in the US remained relatively low. Attendance at a diabetes self-management class was particularly low (55.4%), which is of concern because of the importance of education in a patient’s adherence to diabetes-maintenance behaviors. Dr. R. Phillip Dellinger is a Professor of Medicine who holds a faculty appointment in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He is also the Vice-Chair, Department of Medicine and the Director, Medical/Surgical/Cardiovascular Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the Cooper Medical Center in Camden New Jersey. In 2006-2007, he was selected as South Jersey Top Docs by South Jersey Magazine. Dr. Dellinger's interests are in the treatment and outcomes of septic shock.

Conclusions:

Turning 2D CT/PET slices into 3D objects assists in understanding the topology surrounding tumor masses. Incorporating the visual and physical characteristics of a patient’s anatomy will provide surgeons with an informative pre-operative tool to plan and practice the operation before the first incision. Including haptic feedback provides a familiar 'feel' to surgeons as they palpate the target organ, trying to locate the tumor and determine how large a margin of resection will be needed.
