This presentation will address DSM-V criteria for feeding and eating disorders, demographics for eating disorders, long-term medical issues associated with eating disorders, assessment measures for feeding and eating disorders, and resources for the community. Being able to identify, assess, and treat eating disorders within the children and adolescent population is crucial in their long-term physical development and mental health as eating disorders typically begin in mid-adolescence.

Between 12-24 million people in the United States suffer chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD is linked to reduced physical activity and may be due to effects of the disease on the musculoskeletal system. Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) clinics offer patients the chance for a better quality of life through exercise programs. However, PR typically lasts 36 sessions and is covered by Medicare. However, any maintenance past the 36 visits requires that costs to be covered by the patient. Cost and access to infrastructure are major barriers to continued supervised maintenance. Background: Functional mobility in stroke survivors is affected by the deterioration in bilateral coordination while walking. A passive exoskeletal device, the Kickstart (Cadence Biomedical, Seattle, WA), that provides assistance during walking may help correct asymmetrical gait patterns by providing different task constraints for each leg during gait training. Methods: 15 healthy young participants walked on a split-belt treadmill where the speed of each belt could be controlled independently. Each participant’s preferred walking speed (PWS), fast walking speed (FWS) and slow walking speed (SWS) was established. Participants then underwent the experimental protocol while either wearing or not wearing the exoskeleton. The …

Nationally, men who have sex with men (MSM) continue to be significantly affected by HIV compared to other populations. Surveillance data indicates that in Nebraska, between 2011 and 2015, over 55% of new HIV cases were MSM.¹ More specifically, the majority of new HIV cases in the state of Nebraska are reported in Douglas County.² The rate of Hispanic Latino males living with an HIV diagnosis is 2.3 times of white males.³ Similarly, the rate of Hispanic/Latina women living with HIV diagnosis is 3.4 times that white females.³ It is important to identify culturally appropriate messages …

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is caused by blockages in the lower extremity arteries that results in pain during walking known as claudication. Gait variability has emerged as a functional assessment in older and pathological groups1. A healthy gait pattern demonstrates stride-to-stride fluctuations within a certain range of values.2 This study uses standard deviation (SD) and coefficient of variation (CV) to assess the magnitude of variability in the time series. . The Ruiez-Moreno CHIKV model predicts the outcome of the Chikungunya disease. Chikungunya, a disease similar to the Zika virus, is vector-borne with very little treatment for patients. This experiment looks to find ways to improve the model. The model will still need further improvement, as there is no model that can predict with full certainty. Objective: Objectively examine postpartum mothers’ physical activity (PA) and sleep. Compare PA and sleep of overweight/obese and normal weight postpartum mothers. Setting: A mid-sized city in the Midwestern United States. Participants: Twenty-one mothers who had an infant at least three months old. Participants were classified as normal weight (n = 8) or overweight (n = 13). Methods: PA and sleep levels were gathered for four days at three time intervals in the six months following childbirth. Identified risk polymorphisms affecting the Jak-STAT3 pathway in patients with Crohn’s disease could affect TGF-β1 and collagen I expression and in the pathway’s negative regulator, SOCS3. Genetic factors, however, account for only ~25% of disease. Epigenetic events also shape gene expression. Recent experiments showed that autocrine IL-6 production in mesenchymal cells, subepithelial myofibroblasts (SEMF) and muscle cells, of patients with fibrostenotic Crohn’s disease causes sustained Jak-STAT3 activity, excess TGF-β1 and Collagen I production and fibrosis. SOCS3 paradoxically decreased in these cells. We now identify epigenetic mechanisms that silence SOCS3 expression in SEMF of patients with fibrostenotic Crohn’s disease. In a …

This is an enriching experience for undergraduate students, giving them a clinical and hands on experience in the field of Optometry. Students will have the opportunity to participate in research, see participants, shadow optometrists, engage in new studies, and possibly present their research at the end of their second semester. Students will work under a health professional at HPD and first observe their work along with the work of the interns before them to get familiar with the position. They will typically see participants for research about 2-3 times a week, and work on their term paper outside of that.

This program is a 10-week internship designed for undergraduates interested in the scientific field to engage in current research. Students have the option of requesting to work under three mentors, one of which they will be paired. Students will work in the lab with the principal investigator and other members of the lab. Along with working in the lab, students in the program will also attend bi-weekly talks/lectures from researchers, grad students, and professionals at TSRI as well as participating in two presentations and a final poster or oral presentation.

Background

The focus on traditional acute, hospital-based health care is being replaced with a new paradigm aimed at providing primary care, care of populations, and care across transitions and providers. The Institute of Medicine’s report (2010), the “Future of Nursing” emphasized the need for nurses to lead health care change and called for nursing education focused on a community and population-based perspective, person centered care, and emerging roles for nurses across the care continuum. In response, the Jefferson College of Nursing embarked on the ambitious task of designing a new and innovative baccalaureate nursing curriculum over a 13 month period.

When they complete preschool and begin kindergarten, they should be using complete, complex sentences, have an extensive vocabulary, and use correct grammar. During pregnancy, women typically see a disruption in sleep and an abnormal amount of abdominal fat accumulation. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a relationship between sleep disturbance, quality or quantity and the accumulation of abdominal fat during pregnancy. METHODS: First-time pregnant women (N=25) were recruited from a local OB/GYN office. Participants (aged 27.2±4.5 years) visited the exercise physiology laboratory at KSU to obtain body composition measurements and sleep data between 17 and 21 weeks gestation.
