Abstract

Background: Of the 2 million veterans that have been deployed to combat zones, 13-20% of them most likely have developed posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Only half of the returning combat veterans seek care, and only about 40% experience significant improvement of their symptoms of PTSD. One potentially effective intervention for PTSD has been the use of service dogs. Veterans have reported that service dogs have decreased their PTSD symptoms when they could not find relief from other PTSD interventions.

Streptococcus mutans JH1140 is a strain of bacteria which produces a lantibiotic product, named mutacin 1140. Mutacin 1140 has been shown to be effective at inhibiting Gram-positive bacterial infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae. Mutacin 1140 is a ribosomally synthesized peptide antibiotic that undergoes extensive posttranslational modifications (PTM). We have found that Mutacin 1140 and an aminoglycoside, Kanamycin, when combined together, act synergistically against Staphylococcus aureus. This was determined by performing serial kill curve dilution overlays on solid media, followed up with kill curve by microdilution plate, and most recently confirmed with kill curve CFU count plates …

INTRODUCTION: Three Master’s degree candidate students opted to pilot a neuro-behavior concentration track after completing the first year of core Biomedical Sciences courses.

METHODS: Courses from the Mental Health Counseling, School Psychology and Clinical Psychology programs as well as select classes from the second year Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Clinical and Basic Neuroscience course were integrated into the curriculum. Routine discussions and additional clinical or research experiences enhanced the understanding and appreciation of the combination of courses from the various disciplines.

Objective: Examine relationship between magnitude and frequency of head impacts during regular and postseason soccer games. Setting: Collegiate soccer fields. Participants: 17 women’s soccer athletes (height=163.68±4.99 cm, age=19.88±1.05 years, mass=61.12±5.00 kg) participated in 19 regular and 9 postseason games during 2014 season.
