Causes Of Obesity, Barbara Brown Apr 1976

Causes Of Obesity, Barbara Brown

Honors Theses

The preoccupation with obesity finds expression in the popularity of books and articles dealing with dieting and weight control, the rapid growth of weight reduction groups such as Tops and Weight Watchers, as well as the full marketing of numerous low calorie and dietetic foods. Much of the interest in weight control is a consequence of the current standards of physical beauty in our society. But another more pressing reason for interest in weight control is the documented evidence relating obesity to various somatic disorders.

Verbal Interference With Visual Classification: Optimal Processing And Experimental Design, John H. Flowers, Beccy Blair Jan 1976

Verbal Interference With Visual Classification: Optimal Processing And Experimental Design, John H. Flowers, Beccy Blair

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The speed of classification of six alternative ink colors into two categories of three colors each was measured in tasks for which the colors were displayed as either XXXX patterns or incongruent words (Stroop stimuli). Substantial interference from the words occurred when the classification required grouping nonadjacent hues (red, yellow, and blue vs. orange, green, and purple) regardless of whether subjects received exclusive practice with this classification. Interference also occurred when the classification required grouping adjacent hues (red, orange, and yellow vs. green, blue, and purple), but only if this classification was intermixed within blocks of trials with the nonadjacent …

The Use Of Dance As A Tool For Personality Integration, Barbara Throckmorton Rankin Jan 1976

The Use Of Dance As A Tool For Personality Integration, Barbara Throckmorton Rankin

Dissertations and Theses

This study is exploratory in nature. The material was highly individualistic and subjective, so I have deviated from the traditional empirical research approach. My purpose is to grasp what kind of person was attracted to attending a dance workshop. How does Halprin’s use of dance assist people in learning about themselves? What kinds of information do people learn about themselves through her dance process? What techniques does Halprin combine with the medium of dance to get results? Are people enhanced, or better integrated by the Halprin process? Finally, my intention was to be stimulated by the Halprin process to explore …

Effects Of Surveillance On Intrinsic Motivation, Richard Rajala Jan 1976

Effects Of Surveillance On Intrinsic Motivation, Richard Rajala

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Previous research indicates that explicit surveillance should induce subjects to attribute their performance at a task to the surveillance; hence, such subjects should persist to a lesser extent than subjects not exposed to such surveillance. Two forms of explicit surveillance were utilized: human and camera, as well as the appropriate opposites (human non- and camera non-surveillance). Subjects were directed to perform a model construction task, then were unobtrusively observed during a post-task “waiting period.” No difference in persistence was found for type of surveillance utilized. However, as predicted, subjects exposed to surveillance persisted less with the task materials than subjects …

Schizophrenia: Institutionalization And Dependence, Jerry L. Boyd

Masters Theses

The review of the literature dealt with dependence in mental patients. Additional focus was given to the process of patienthood as it relates to the acquisition of dependence. Research on schizophrenia was then discussed and the special interaction of the schizophrenic and the environment was explicated. Finally, attention was given to the unique relationship between the schizophrenic mental patient and dependence.

57 Ss from a rural area in the midwestern United States were given the 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire (Form C). Ss were divided into 3 groups. The groups were matched according to age, sex, race, marital status, and education. …

A Study Of Requests For Voluntary Admission To Oregon State Hospital, Julie Kern, Jeanne Miller, Alice Plummer Jan 1976

A Study Of Requests For Voluntary Admission To Oregon State Hospital, Julie Kern, Jeanne Miller, Alice Plummer

Dissertations and Theses

This study was undertaken in February and March of 1975 in order to provide in depth analysis of those seeking hospital admission. It is a descriptive study of requests for voluntary admission to Oregon State Hospital. Special care was taken to incorporate the study in such a way that the current admitting procedures would not be rearranged or changed in any way.

Essentially the study asks the questions:

  • Who makes self-requests for hospitalization?
  • Where do they come from? When? How do they get there? Why do they come?
  • What is the history of their contact with other community agencies for …

The Use Of Visual And Name Codes In Scanning And Classifying Colors, John H. Flowers, Susan Dutch Jan 1976

The Use Of Visual And Name Codes In Scanning And Classifying Colors, John H. Flowers, Susan Dutch

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The effect of incongruent color words on speed of classifying ink colors was measured in visual scanning tasks and in card sorting tasks. In both cases, little or no interference effects were noted when the classification allowed focusing on a single ink color or a set of highly similar colors (adjacent hues). Substantial interference occurred when the task required grouping of three dissimilar colors (nonadjacent hues). These findings suggest that the relative efficiency of name and visual codes in making perceptual classifications is largely dependent upon the memory requirements imposed by the task.

The Runaways, Richard David Young Oct 1975

The Runaways, Richard David Young

IUSTITIA

At the present stage of development, the varied literature on runaway children and adolescents provides little basis for firm conclusions. The apparent heterogeneity of runaways has yet to be fully realized in conceptual or research attempts, although efforts in that direction are beginning. There appears to be little utility or meaning in assigning runaway behavior solely to categories of delinquency or psychopathology. Such efforts have done little to clarify the meaning of running away or to define the important environmental factors and personality features involved in running away. To some extent their greatest impact has been on the restriction of …

An Emotion-Attribution Approach To Moral Behavior: Interfacing Cognitive And Avoidance Theories Of Moral Development, Richard A. Dienstbier, Donald Hillman, John Lehnhoff, Judith Hillman, Maureen C. Valkenaar Oct 1975

An Emotion-Attribution Approach To Moral Behavior: Interfacing Cognitive And Avoidance Theories Of Moral Development, Richard A. Dienstbier, Donald Hillman, John Lehnhoff, Judith Hillman, Maureen C. Valkenaar

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

A theory is presented concerning the impact of attributions about the causes of emotional responses as they influence self-control in temptation situations. Research is reviewed indicating a high level of adult sensitivity to external influence in making such causal attributions. Two studies are presented in which the post transgression emotions of second-grade children are labeled shame (because of being found out) or guilt (due to the transgression itself); when a similar situation was subsequently represented as safe from detection, shame-condition children transgressed 60–80% more than guilt-condition subjects. It is suggested that emotional arousal elicited in temptation situations because of past …

Utilization Of Mental Health Services For Children Relative To Social Class. A Pilot Study, H. K. Von Brauchitsch Jun 1975

Utilization Of Mental Health Services For Children Relative To Social Class. A Pilot Study, H. K. Von Brauchitsch

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Two groups of children were selected from those evaluated and treated over a two-year period. The study attempted to contrast the mental health care needs and the health care delivery system of children from the uppermost classes against those of the lowest classes. Very few diagnostic discriminators were found. Prevalence of intellectual dysfunctions In the lower classes and neuroses in the upper classes did not correlate with behavior pattern of "acting out" or "acting in." Autistic psychoses were found almost exclusively among the upper classes; suicidality almost exclusively In the lower classes. Upper class children were more frequently referred by …

A Cross Validation Of Leary's Level I-M Assessment Method, Bruce Leroy Purvine May 1975

A Cross Validation Of Leary's Level I-M Assessment Method, Bruce Leroy Purvine

Dissertations and Theses

Leary has proposed a method of estimating overt interpersonal behavior from MMPI indices. However, subsequent investigations have only been able to validate a portion of this assessment technique at best.

Thirty adults were individually given the MMPI to obtain estimates of interpersonal vertical (Dom) and horizontal (Lov) scores. Two raters described the subjects using the Interpersonal Checklist (ICL). The mean of theses two ratings produced the interpersonal vertical and horizontal scores.

The Pearson Product Moment statistic was applied to the paired sets of vertical and horizontal scores. The results showed no correlation along the vertical or horizontal dimensions. Several possible …

Lesbian Marriage, Sandi Parks

Dissertations and Theses

Research findings on marriage as a heterosexual institution were reviewed and research was carried out to determine if certain of them were applicable to lesbian “marriage” as well. Marriage was defined as a relationship in which two people have lived together with strong emotional and sexual involvement for a year or more. Subjects were volunteers from among women age 22 or older, who were childless, and who were involved in the women's movement, as well as their friends, lovers and husbands. There were 14 lesbian couples, 14 lesbians who has never been married and 6 lesbians who had been married …

The Client-Centered Counselor In The Pastoral Setting, Joseph Roland Armshaw May 1975

The Client-Centered Counselor In The Pastoral Setting, Joseph Roland Armshaw

Graduate Theses

A role conflict exists for the priest in the contemporary Catholic church. He must act as an official minister of an authoritarian church in his spiritual role and at the same time as a counselor that meets the needs of his parishioners in his secular role. Therefore, "How authoritarian must he be?" and "How per missive can he be?" It is proposed in this study that the modern Catholic priest can find an answer to this dilemma when he applies Rogers' client-centered counseling theory to his pastoral role. Rogers' theory is based on the dignity, worth, and trustworthiness of the …

"Sensory" Interference In A Word-Color Matching Task, John H. Flowers Jan 1975

"Sensory" Interference In A Word-Color Matching Task, John H. Flowers

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Two experiments measured RTs for matching sequentially displayed color names to color patches. Experiment I demonstrated that printing the name in an incongruent color produced longer RTs than when the name was printed in black ink or a congruent colored ink, provided the time interval between the name display and the color patch display was brief (less than 100 msec). This interference was attenuated with longer delays. In Experiment II, a wider range of irrelevant colors was combined with the name display, and RT was found to be correlated with the colorimetric dissimilarity between the name and the irrelevant color. …

A Systematic Investigation Of Warning Stimulus Modality Effects On Two-Way Active Shuttle Avoidance Performance In Rats, James Paul Villaume Jan 1975

A Systematic Investigation Of Warning Stimulus Modality Effects On Two-Way Active Shuttle Avoidance Performance In Rats, James Paul Villaume

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Three students systematically investigated the hypothesis of Rosic, Frontali and Bignami (1969) that certain stimuli facilitate higher levels of avoidance performance (i.e., more correct responses) because of their ability to generate greater amounts of unconditioned motor activity during the stimulus presentation. Experiment I showed that buzzer, tone and light stimuli produce different amounts of unconditioned motor activity in rats, with the buzzer generating the most activity and the light generating the least. In Experiment II, the introduction of non-contingent shock resulted in a reduction in motor activity levels, but the buzzer still produced higher levels of activity than the light. …

An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Loneliness And Differential Diagnosis In A Rural Mental Health Center, Kathryn Dunscomb Jan 1975

An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Loneliness And Differential Diagnosis In A Rural Mental Health Center, Kathryn Dunscomb

Masters Theses

The review of the literature discussed loneliness in general and specified three seperate forms of loneliness; social, psychic, and existential. The relationships between loneliness, social interaction, and pathology were discussed. 139 clients were given the Belcher Extended Loneliness Scale - Revised prior to therapy. They were assigned one of six diagnostic categories to determine loneliness score (LS), diagnostic, and sex interactions. An analysis of variance found a significant difference (p <.0001) between the diagnostic categories’ LS. The schizophrenic’s and the neurotic’s LS s were significantly higher (<.05) than the remaining categories. The males had significantly (p <.036) higher LS than the females. It was also hypothesized that the degree of loneliness would increase the lower the diagnostic developmental level. The hypothesized order was not consistent with the results. Further research was recommended.

Exploration Of The Incidence Of Identified Emotional Disorders In Selected General Hospitals Of Nebraska, Arlene M. Van Horn Sep 1974

Exploration Of The Incidence Of Identified Emotional Disorders In Selected General Hospitals Of Nebraska, Arlene M. Van Horn

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A descriptive-comparative survey using content analysis of medical records has been done to determine the frequency with which emotional disorders are identified by medical personnel in the population hospitalized in small general hospitals in north-central Nebraska.

A systematic, random sample of medical records was taken from two hospitals arbitrarily included in the study on the basis of bed capacity and distance from mental health facilities.

Each medical record that was reviewed has been placed in a category based on whether an emotional disorder was identified in it by the medical personnel, or whether it contained recorded behaviors that could indicate …
