The Relations Of Pubertal Status To Intrapersonal Changes In Young Adolescents, Lorah D. Dorn, Lisa J. Crockett, Anne C. Petersen
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relations between pubertal development and adolescents’ perceptions of their physical and emotional states. Two research questions were posed: (a) What are the effects of pubertal status upon satisfaction with appearance and mood states of the adolescent; and, (b) What are the patterns of those pubertal effects in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades? A nonclinical group of adolescents (N = 253) was selected from two cohorts and was followed from sixth through eighth grade. Multiple measures were used to assess satisfaction with appearance and mood states. Significant multivariate findings were limited to …
Increasing The Self-Esteem Of Junior High Emotionally Disturbed Boys, La Rue Eaton Richey
Increasing The Self-Esteem Of Junior High Emotionally Disturbed Boys, La Rue Eaton Richey
Student Dissertations & Theses
Emotional disturbance can be viewed as an inability to manage one's behavior. This inability to maintain self-control in stressful situations represents a serious problem not only for the individual but for family and school personnel. In this study, Reasoner's (1984) Building Self-Esteem program was used with seventh and eighth grade emotionally disturbed boys in a West Texas community. Their self-esteem scores did increase as measured by Coopersmith (1984) Self-Esteem Inventory. *

Four experiments examined how people operate on memory representations of familiar songs. The tasks were similar to those used in studies of visual imagery. In one task, subjects saw a one word lyric from a song and then saw a second lyric; then they had to say if the second lyric was from the same song as the first. In a second task, subjects mentally compared pitches of notes corresponding to song lyrics. In both tasks, reaction time increased as a function of the distance in beats between the two lyrics in the actual song, and in some conditions reaction …
Prediction Of Intellectual Deficits In Children With Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia, Paul Trautman, Candace Erickson, David Shaffer, Patricia O'Connor, Annaliese Sitarz, Antonio Correra, Irvin Sam Schonfeld
Prediction Of Intellectual Deficits In Children With Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia, Paul Trautman, Candace Erickson, David Shaffer, Patricia O'Connor, Annaliese Sitarz, Antonio Correra, Irvin Sam Schonfeld
Publications and Research
Possible predictors of reported lower cognitive functioning in irradiated children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) were investigated. Thirty-four subjects, 5-14 years old, with ALL in continuous complete remission and without evidence of current or past central nervous system disease, were examined 9-110 months after diagnosis, using standard measures of intelligence and academic achievement. Subjects with a history of post-irradiation somnolence syndrome were significantly older at diagnosis than nonsomnolent subjects. Intelligence (IQ) was found to be unrelated to history of somnolence syndrome. IQ and achievement were unrelated to age at irradiation, irradiation-examination interval, and radiation dosages. The strongest predictor of IQ …
The Effects Of Spouse-Based Cognitive-Behavior Therapy On The Treatment Of Agoraphobia, Joan Woods
The Effects Of Spouse-Based Cognitive-Behavior Therapy On The Treatment Of Agoraphobia, Joan Woods
Dissertations
The purpose of this clinical research was to determine whether spouse-supported treatment of agoraphobia would result in greater improvement on measures of exposure and avoidance than would individual treatment or no treatment. It was hypothesized that Couples Treatment subjects would demonstrate a significantly greater change from pretest to posttest than would Individual Treatment subjects or No-Treatment Control subjects. The study further predicted that significant improvements would be demonstrated for both treated groups on the same outcome measures, pretest to posttest and from pretest to follow-up.
Total N was 10 subjects, all were agoraphobic, married, and female, with 4 in Couples …

"Cradled On The Sea": Positive Images Of Prison And Theories Of Punishment, Martha Grace Duncan
"Cradled On The Sea": Positive Images Of Prison And Theories Of Punishment, Martha Grace Duncan
Faculty Articles
This interdisciplinary study investigates the meanings of incarceration through an analysis of prison memoirs and novels. It argues that many prisoners and nonprisoners exhibit powerful positive associations to penal confinement. The Article draws on psychoanalysis, philosophy, and sociology to account for the various kinds of attraction that prison exerts. The Article also considers the interrelationships between the analysis of the positive images and three traditional purposes of punishment: rehabilitation, deterrence, and retribution.

Conduct Disorder And Cognitive Functioning: Testing Three Causal Hypotheses, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, David Shaffer, Patricia O'Connor, Stephanie Portnoy
Publications and Research
Studied the relation between cognitive functioning, as evidenced by IQ and achievement test performance, and Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) categories of conduct disturbance, using data from Black adolescents who were members of collaborative perinatal project from birth to age 7 yrs. At age 17 yrs, Ss and their parents were administered a battery of instruments that included standardized psychiatric diagnostic interviews as part of a call-back study. Analyses were compatible with the hypothesis that deficiencies in cognitive functioning are causally related to adolescent conduct disorder as defined by DSM—III. Results suggest that the relation of cognitive …
