Ultrasonic Versus Hand Filing Of The Human Root Canal System, Howard W. Scholz Jr.

A comparison was made of ultrasonic filing versus hand filing using three solutions to flood the canals of 24 extracted human maxillary central incisors. A modified PR-30 Cavitron insert was used in a Cavitron 1010 unit for the ultrasonic filing. The clinical crown was removed with a diamond saw and water spray at the cemento-enamel junction. The two major groups were ultrasonic filing versus hand filing; the three subgroups were solution/solvents - 10% EDTA, 2.0% NaOCl, and distilled water.

An experimental study was conducted with twenty-one breast-feeding primiparas during the initial four-week post-partal period to test the effect of in-home community health nursing assessment and counseling on the breast-feeding success rate. It was hypothesized that mothers receiving assessment and counseling regarding physical, informational and psychosocial needs, would be more successful than those who were not counseled.

Criteria for success were: (1) breast-feeding at four weeks postpartum, (2) an adequate milk supply as evidenced by no need for formula supplementation to keep the baby satisfied, (3) an infant weight gain of one to two pounds during the four-week period, and …

Endodontic therapy was evaluated as a possible control or prevention modality of radiation type dental caries in dogs. Two adult male dogs with permanent dentitions had endodontic therapy performed on alternating teeth in each jaw. The nontreated teeth served as controls.

The dogs were irradiated with 7000 rad Cobalt-60 radiation fractionated over an eight week period. The dogs were killed at 60 and 182 days post-irradiation. The teeth were removed from the jaws and immersed in methylene blue dye, sectioned, and the dye penetration pattern photographed. Diffusion of the dye into the tooth structure was quantified and statistically analyzed.

An investigation was conducted to evaluate the application of Xeroradiography for imaging the Temporomandibular Joint using the Updegrave and Weinberg positioning boards and to compare these images to those obtained by conventional radiography using the same positioning boards.

A cadaver head in which three spherical radiopaque implants had been placed was used in this study. A General Electric Model 1000 (Dental Unit) was the source of radiation. The conventional radiographs were produced on Dupont Cronex 2DC film and processed by a Phillips 810 automatic processed by a Xerox "125 System".

This study compared the ability of three different bone growth factor combinations with that of Ca(OH)₂ to stimulate apical closure as well as the effectiveness of Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) as an apical barrier. Fifty-six roots of second and fourth mandibular premolars of seven six- month old beagle dogs were used. Periradicular lesions were created over a four week period. Aggregated forms of deoxyhemoglobin S were examined with a field emission transmission electron microscope. Images of isolated helical fibers were obtained from sickled cell lysates stained directly on the electron microscope grid. Optical and digital analyses of the electron micrographs showed that the fibers are similar to those characterized by J.T. Finch, M. F. Perutz, J. F. Bertles, and J. Dobler [(1973) Proc.NatL Acad. Sci. USA 70, 718-7221 in that they consist of stacked discs each composed of six hemoglobin molecules. The fibers exhibit an outer diameter of 160-170 A and an inner diameter of about 60 A with an …

A precision filing test involving the reduction of a steel cylinder to a perfect cube with the use of a hand file and bench vise was devised as a diagnostic tool for the early detection of freshman students having technic difficulties. The test was administered to 188 freshman dental students in three classes at Loma Linda University, School of Dentistry. Subjective and objective scores were then statistically compared with subsequent technic and clinic grades of the students. A 6-week study was made in the summer of 1971 as an initial effort to determine the extent of pollution that the three sewage disposal plants in Jessamine County, Kentucky, are contributing to its streams. With the rapid population increase in Lexington and nearby municipalities, this study should furnish a basis of comparison for future investigations. Eighteen collecting stations were established in riffle areas of Hickman and Jessamine Creeks, and coliform bacteria, macro-invertebrate populations, fish populations and chemical water quality of each riffle area were studied.

Research results from studies of the physiological effects of aerosal propellants on animals and people are summarized. The papers selected for this summary were published between 1968 and 1975. Effects of the 15 chlorofluorocarbons used as propellants have been recorded on the cardiac, pulmonary and respiratory functions of a number of animal species as well as man. The fifteen propellants have been classified into four groups on the basis of their degree of toxicity. Fluorocarbon 11, the most frequently used propellant, is in group 1, the most toxic. This thesis describes a comparative study of 82 vegetarian and 21 non-vegetarian Seventh-day Adventist females ages 25 to 65 to discover if there is a possible correlation between diet and weight. The subjects were chosen by random sampling in the specified target population and were personally interviewed by the use of a questionnaire.

The general linear hypothesis analysis shewed that present age and relative weight at age 25 were significant in terms of present relative weight; however, physical activity and socioeconomic stratum were not significant. Diet, defined as vegetarian or non-vegetarian, was only marginally significant.

This study was undertaken to determine which intracanal medication, 1% aqueous parachlorophenol with prednisolone or XP-7 with prednisolone was the most effective in reducing the severity and duration of post-treatment pain following initial, conventional endodontic therapy. The investigation was conducted by five endodontists in their private offices and utilized a double-blind technique.

The postoperative reactions of 343 patients were examined statistically. It was shown that there was no statistically significant difference in the reduction or duration of post-treatment pain with either drug. It was the purpose of this study to identify the attitudes of a selected group of women which influenced their participation in Papanicolaou testing. These attitudes were inferred from the reasons women gave for obtaining the test. The subjects were randomly selected from the telephone book of a medium-sized town in Southern California. The 135 women who participated in the telephone interview were considered to be the respondents in the study.

The primary object of this dissertation is to present some con­tributions to the theory of estimation of growth curves by least square splines in the presence of unknown unequal variances. The theoretical developments rest heavily on the standard least square theory and the theory of polynomial spline functions. A modifica­tion of the Aitken procedure of weighted least squares is used to estimate regression parameters. It is shown that this modification of the Aitken procedure does not unduly influence the nice least square properties of estimators so obtained; the estimators re­ main unbiased, consistent and asymptotically efficient.

During 1973 and 1974 a large range of fungicide spray and seed treatment schedules were tested. The 1973 results were, on the whole, not very encouraging, but the very early post-germination spray, two weeks after germination, did indicate a possible means of control. In view of the 1973 results, in the 1974 trials fungicidal sprays were applied early, and a new method of application of fungicide to the seed, known as "prilling" was used. This study presented evidence for the existence of a membrane-bound, sodium-activated ATPase which does not require potassium ions for its activity. Furthermore, the data suggest the presence of a soluble factor which activates this enzyme and may play a regulatory role in sodium transport.

The mode of action of the algicide produced by Pandorina morum was examined by exposing Volvox globator and isolates spinach chloroplasts to a partially purified algicide preparation. Oxygen evolution of Volvox, whole chloroplasts and broken chloroplasts (minus the Calvin cycle),was reduced indicating that the algicide inhibits the light reactions of photosynthesis. Oxygen evolution studies of other Volvocaceae confirmed the observation that Pandorina morum is not significantly influenced by its own inhibitor. Molecular weight approximation by gel filtration established that the inhibitor has a low molecular weight (probably below 100 mw).
