The best understood functional activity of the pineal gland is its diurnal production of melatonin in response to environmental lighting cues. Several enzymes of the melatonin pathway respond to daily photoperiod changes, for example hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase (HIOMT) and serotonin N-acetyltransferase (SNAT). Increased levels of the glycolytic enzyme neuron-specific enolase (NSE) are thought to reflect increased physiological demands placed on neurons and neuroendocrine tissues. Homodimer non-neuronal enolase isoenzyme (NNE) is immunolocalized to cells, and the hybrid enolase (consisting of subunits from NSE and NNE) has been seen in cerebellar stellate and basket cells. Cholesterol oleate was demonstrated to be the cuticular contact sex pheromone of Dermacentor variabilis. This pheromone which has been termed the Mounting Sex Pheromone (MSP) was also demonstrated to be present on the surface of D. andersoni, Amblyomma maculatum and A. americanum. This contact sex pheromone enables males excited and attracted by 2,6-dichlorophenol to identify the female as a potential mating partner. The MSP is the second in the series of three sex pheromones guiding the hierarchy of behavioral responses which constitute tick courtship behavior. Tests with D. variabilis and D. andersoni showed that this pheromone …

Occupational stress is costly in terms of human suffering and impaired organizational effectiveness. Occupational stress involves the interface between the individual worker and the work environment. The purpose of the study was to analyze the fit between motivational style and the type of job demands as a contributing factor in developing occupational stress symptoms. A literature review of occupational stress models was conducted. Feasibility Of An Extraoral Method For Predicting Manibular Incisor Relapse, Mark J. Saylor

The author undertook to develop an extraoral model for predicting mandibular incisor relapse similar to the model described by Harvey and Sheldon Peck. Whereas the Peck and Peck method involves intraoral measurements, the method described in this paper relied on the taking of measurements from the patient's pre-treatment plaster models. Two hundred and sixty teeth were measured both orally and on plaster casts, and several statistical tests were performed to isolate any differences between the intraoral and extraoral methods. Concerns have been expressed for the ability of some vegetarian diets to support normal growth of children. Animal protein or meat intake showed a positive relationship to attained height in children from developing countries. In this study, the relationship between meat intake/vegetarian status and physical growth was investigated in children living in California.

Height and weight were collected on 2,272 Caucasian children aged 6-18 years attending Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) or public schools who participated in a two year longitudinal study. Age-, sex-, and school-specific mean heights and weights were at or above the national reference values. Sex-specific, age-adjusted regression analysis …

Facial typing methods are used to determine to which of three basic facial pattern categories an individual patient belongs. These three categories are mesofacial, brachyfacial, and dolichofacial. It is important to establish the correct facial type because the reaction to treatment mechanics and the stability of the denture is dependent upon the analysis of the facial patterns. The purpose of this paper was to show a comparative study of facial typing classification methods used on 100 patients (47 boys and 53 girls). This trial was of similar design to the single row evaluation, except four replications and pesticide treatments were also included.
However the trial had to be abandoned due to severe phytotoxic responses seen in the medics due to repeated spraying of 'Lorsban' (used at recommended rates).
Intended to repeat this work in 1990, bulk seed where possible and to eventually assess these lines, under such conditions, in large plots.

Sheep fed cereal grains as an energy source over summer usually need added calcium because cereal grains are generally low in calcium (for example, 0.03 per cent calcium compared to 0.26 per cent phosphorus), and there may not be a natural source such as clover, weeds, leafy stubble or edible bush in the paddock.

The safestt and most effective calcium supplement is finely ground limestone added to the feed, but some farmers have used other sources of calcium such as gypsum and superphosphate in this manner.

Lithium has been known to be an effective medication for people with bipolar disorder. The mechanisms of action of lithium in the brain is not very well understood. NMR spectroscopy and imaging are effective both in determining lithium levels in tissue and brain. We have monitored lithium levels in red blood cells. We have been able to separate intra- and extracellular compartments of lithium using shift reagents, thereby obtaining T^1 's of both the compartments. Lithium uptake as a function of hematocrit was monitored weekly over a 3 week period. The time constant of 50 mM lithium uptake at 25°C …

Drugs such as adrenoceptor antagonists and certain centrally acting agents are known to lower blood pressure and thus serve as clinically useful antihypertensive agents. Norepinephrine 4, a natural ∝-adrenoceptor agonist, is the major agent associated with increased blood pressure in the periphery. Based on a careful structure-activity comparison, a series of substituted oxazolidines, 20, 21, 22 and 23, have been designed as possible antihypertensive candidates. Specifically, 22 and 23 have been synthesized to serve as potential norepinephrine antagonists.

Preliminary evaluation of these compounds indicated that they were not antihypertensive in nature. The more active compound, 23, …

The diabetic C57BL/KsJ-db m mouse has abnormal thyroid hormone levels and indications of thyroid hormone resistance. To investigate the basis of these abnormalities, the hepatic nuclear thyroid hormone receptor was extracted with 0.4 M KCl, 1.1 mM MgCl₂, 20 mM Tris/HCl, pH 7.9 from hepatocyte nuclei of normal C57BL/KsJ, heterozygous C57BL/KsJ-db m (db/m), and diabetic C57BL/KsJ-db m (db/db) mice. Normal and heterozygous mice were grouped together as the controls.
