An Analysis Of Blood Cortisol Levels In Oral Surgery Patients Under Various Levels Of Intravenous Medication, Fred L. Bunch

This study was designed to objectively evaluate each pharmacological component of the Loma Linda intravenous sedation technique. The results were evaluated as a function of stress as measured by plasma cortisol levels.

The study was conducted on fifty patients in groups of ten. Blood samples were taken at set procedure intervals during dental extraction of third molar teeth. A component of the Loma Linda technique was deleted from each of the groups to ascertain its role in sedation and relief of stress.

Results show a trend toward reduction of plasma cortisol levels as the procedure progresses, indicating a measure of …

The Effect Of A Pufa Diet On Human Red Blood Cell Levels Of 2, 3-Dpg, Sandra A. Dassenko

Fasting blood was collected at weekly intervals and the level of 2,3-DPG of the red blood cell was determined in 15 male subjects age 28 to 57 with serum cholesterol levels greater than 250 mg%. A lactovegetarian diet containing no cholesterol, a high level of dietary fiber and a P/S ratio of 4.0 was provided for 28 days.

During the course of the experimental period the 2,3-DPG increased by an average of 0.83> «moles/ml red blood cell which was highly significant (p^.001). This significant increase of 2,3-DPG which relates to an increased oxygen delivery capability of the red blood cells …

It was the purpose of this study to identify the attitudes of a selected group of women which influenced their participation in Papanicolaou testing. These attitudes were inferred from the reasons women gave for obtaining the test. The subjects were randomly selected from the telephone book of a medium-sized town in Southern California. The 135 women who participated in the telephone interview were considered to be the respondents in the study.

A review of the literature revealed that through the annual use of the Papanicolaou smear, approximately 11,000 deaths every year from uterine and cervical cancer could be prevented, Attitudes …

The LD₅₀ of Vibrio parahaemolyticus ATCC 17803 for 13- to 18-g male mice, strain ICR, as determined by the 50% endpoint method, was found to be an estimated 7 x 10⁷ CFU, when administered intraperitoneally in 0.5 ml of 24-h broth culture, O. D. 0.5 at 650 nm, diluted to 10^-0.72.

The elicitation of protective antibody by this bacterium in male New Zealand White rabbits was demonstrated by testing control, baseline, and hyperimmune rabbit sera for their protective effect against 2 LD₅₀ of the bacterium administered intraperitoneally in 13- to 18-g male mice, strain ICR. …

A large degree of variation in fiber tracheid length, vood specific gravity, and time of apical bud formation existed vithin two populations of Liquidambar styraciflua L. from south central Kentucky. The variation exhibited by these populations may be attributed to the self-sterility of Liquidaribar and the variable environment of south central Kentucky. Variation of fiber tracheid length and wood specific gravity within the two populations was significant. Fiber tracheid length was dependent on temperature and photoperiod while wood specific gravity was primarily dependent on temperature. A significant level of variation was also evident between the two populations regarding tracheid length. …

An Evaluation Of The Cytotoxicity Of Root Canal Filling Materials On Tissue Culture Cells In Vitro: Grossman's Sealer, N2 Permanent, Rickert's Sealer, And Cavit, Donald D. Antrim

An in vitro study using radioactively-labeled tissue culture cells was conducted over a seven-month period on Grossman's sealer, Rickert's sealer, N₂ Permanent, and Cavit to determine the lasting and relative tissue toxicity of these materials.

From this study it was observed that all materials possess lasting tissue toxicity. When relative toxicity is considered, Grossman's is the most toxic, followed by N₂, Rickert's and Cavit in descending order of toxicity. Both Grossman's and N₂ would be considered highly toxic, with Rickert's displaying moderate toxicity. Cavit would be considered mild to moderate in toxicity.

The Relationship Of Alcohol Consumption In Rats To Morphine And Codeine Intake And The Metabolism Of Dopamine, Hsiu Fen Liu

The effects of morphine and codeine free-choice alcohol consumption in male Sprague-Dawley rats were studied. Intakes of a 10% alcohol solution in milliliters per 100 gm. of body weight were on recorded weekly. No difference was found in the alcohol intake of rats given either a morphine-supplemented diet (0.01% of the diet) or daily injection of morphine sulfate (2 mg./kg.); however, there was a significant lower intake of water (p < .05) in those rats fed the diet with morphine. Total fluid consumption of both groups given the morphine-supplemented diet and daily injection of morphine sulfate was decreased (p < .05). It was found that morphine did not affect the percentage of total fluid consumed as alcohol or the weight gain.

Two levels of codeine phosphate (10 mg./kg. and 20 mg./kg.) were injected subcutaneously into rats twice a day. It was observed that the codeine significantly decreased alcohol intake in rats …

Two series of experiments were conducted in order to determine the effects of diet on neutrophilic phagocytosis. The first series was designed to determine the effects of varying amounts of oral glucose on phagocytosis. Blood samples from 6 to 8 subjects were drawn at fasting, and at various time periods following ingestion of 12.5, 25, 50, 75, and 100 grams of glucose. Interactions between five different cardiac glycosides, digitoxin, cymarol, convallatoxol, digoxin and ouabain, and Na+K+-ATPase from guinea pig heart, kidney, brain and rat heart and brain have been studied. Concentrations of glycosides required for 50% inhibition of the enzyme (I50) have been determined at various concentrations of K+. The binding of the glycosides to the enzyme preparations was studied using tritiated glycosides. ATP, Mg2+, and Na+ were required for specific binding. Through the use of Scatchard plots, a high affinity binding site was demonstrated for each guinea pig enzyme preparation, and the association constants (Ka) were measured for each of the …

A computerized system for instruction and diagnosis of clinical electrolyte and acid-base disorders has been implemented on a PDP-8/e minicomputer at the Medical University of South Carolina. The program is designed for use by persons at various stages of medical training: student, house staff, and clinician. This system not only aids the physician in making his diagnosis, but also serves as a means of educational instruction in acid-base physiology for the student. The major objective of the work was to clarify some of the adaptive mechanisms that a common widespread species would show as a possible requirement for survival in its natural habitats. Analysis of various populations of Xanthium (cocklebur) indicated differences in chlorophyll levels and leaf chloroplasts ultrastructure between populations. The study also revealed some insight into intrapopulational variation in dark requirements for flowering of selected populations. In addition, caloric values of dried leaf material of cocklebur were analyzed for interpopulational differences. A study of the seasonal and spatial distribution of phytoplankters in relation to physio-chemical parameters and discharge regime was conducted in Barren Lake, Kentucky, a flood control reservoir with a dam equipped with a multilevel outlet, from February, 1970, through January, 1971. Paired samples were collected every two weeks from April through October and every three weeks from November through March. Samples were obtained from eight depths in the main pool area of the reservoir and from the tailwater. Reservoir discharge was primarily from the upper 3 m from April through September. A pneumotachograph suitable for measuring flow rates of respiratory gases in small animals and comprising essentially a flow-resisting element which can be placed in series with a subject''s airway. The pressure drop across the resistive element is proportional to the rate of airflow and is linear over the range of flows which one normally would expect to encounter in small animals (0-2 liters/min.).

This paper demonstrates the value of oxygen in maintaining arterial blood gas in an adequate range during outpatient oral surgery. Dental extractions were completed on ten patients under an anesthetic technique utilizing Innovar and methohexital with supplemental nasal oxygen. Blood gas samples were drawn at five stages during the procedure.

The mean of the PaO₂ samples drawn with the patient at the point of deepest sedation was approximately three times the normal value.

Jean Mayer has postulated the presence of glucoreceptors located primarily in the ventromedial hypothalamic nuclei of the brain which are activated by glucose in the measure that they utilize it. According to Mayer, hunger occurs when glucose is not available for metabolic purposes and satiation supervenes when glucose is made available. Control of this mechanism rests with the glucoreceptors. These receptors are believed to be destroyed when an injection of the compound goldthioglucose is given to mice. This model of placental CO₂ and O₂ exchange calculates the time course of changes in P_^CO2, [HCO₃^-], and [H⁺] in each of four "compartments" of placental exchange vessels: maternal erythrocytes, maternal plasma, fetal plasma and fetal erythrocytes. The changes in hemoglobin-bound CO₂ (carbamate) and oxyhemoglobin contents within the erythrocytes are also calculated, permitting consideration of the Haldane and Bohr effects. Equations were written to represent one-dimensional steady state CO₂ and O₂ diffusion between concurrent maternal and fetal capillaries and the subsequent hydration, carbamino and oxyhemoglobin reactions. This experimental study was conducted to investigate the effects of lateral positioning on central venous pressure. It was hypothesized that lateral positioning would not significantly change the central venous pressure so long as the subjects were placed on the same horizontal plane for both supine and lateral measurements. It was also hypothesized that the length of time spent in the lateral position would not alter the pressure.

In order to determine the duration of the effect of glucose, fructose, sucrose, honey, starch, and orange juice on neutrophilic phagocytosis, 10 subjects underwent a complete series of carbohydrate tolerance tests. Blood samples were drawn at specific time periods following ingestion of 100 grams of each carbohydrate. Blood was then analyzed for glucose and phagocytic index (the mean number of bacteria engulfed per leukocyte); a red blood cell and white blood cell count and differential white cell count were done also on about 1/2 of the samples. An isolated heart-abdominal ganglion preparation of this mollusc was developed and used to study the cardioregulatory function of the ganglion and nerves. The heart was perfused with artificial sea water through an atrial cannula and the gastro-esophageal artery was catheterized for blood pressure monitoring. The presence and cardioregulatory effects of axons in the nerves was investigated by electrical stimulation. Fine-tipped glass microelectrodes inserted into ganglionic neurons were used to determine the relationship between the neuronal and cardiac activities.

A study of 800 patients ranging in age from seven to one hundred years was conducted in the development of an anesthetic technique which combines the desirable qualities of a neuroleptic agent with the requirements of an outpatient oral surgical anesthetic. These requirements included rapidity of onset, effectiveness of action, ease of controlling duration, and rapid postoperative recovery.

Patients who were cleared medically for outpatient procedures were given Innovar 1.5 cc/150 lb of body weight, atropine 0.4 mg, and fentanyl 1.0 cc/150 lb of body weight as an initial dose within 30-45 seconds in a D5W drip by means of …
