Relationship Between C-Reactive Protein/Albumin Ratio And Mucocutaneous Symptom Frequency And Disease Severity In Behçet’S Disease, Erdal Pala, Mustafa Bayraktar

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: There is no specific marker that can be applied to determine the severity of Behçet’s disease. The aim of this study is to investigate the potential of C-reactive protein (CRP)/albumin (CAR) ratio as a tool for assessing the severity of Behçet’s disease.Materials and methods: A retrospective crosssectional study was conducted by examining hospital archives. The CRP and albumin levels of Behçet’s disease patients who presented to our dermatology clinic over a three-year period from February 2020 to February 2022 were included, along with the identical laboratory parameters in the control group. The CAR ratio was calculated and statistically compared …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: In this prospective study, we aimed to investigate the association of serum (s) and urine (u) IP-10, galectin-9, and SIGLEC-1 with disease activity in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).Materials and methods: Sixty-three patients with active SLE (31 renal, 32 extrarenal) were included. Thirty patients with inactive SLE (15 renal, 15 extrarenal), 17 with renal active AAV, and 32 healthy volunteers were selected as control groups. Serum and urine IP-10, galectin-9, and SIGLEC-1 were tested using ELISA.Results: Levels of sIP-10 (p = 0.046), uIP-10 (p < 0.001), sGalectin-9 (p = 0.03), and uSIGLEC-1 (p = 0.006) were significantly higher in active SLE group compared to the inactive SLE; however, no differences were detected in the comparison of uGalectin-9 (p = 0.18) and sSIGLEC-1 (p = 0.69) between two groups. None of the biomarkers discriminated patients with active renal SLE from active extrarenal SLE. ROC analyses revealed an AUC of 0.63 (0.52–0.73) for sIP-10, 0.78 (0.68–0.86) for uIP-10, 0.64 (0.53–0.74) for sGalectin-9, and 0.68 (0.57–0.77) for uSIGLEC-1 in discriminating disease activity in SLE, which did not outperform C3 (0.75, 0.64–0.84) and C4 (0.72, 0.61–0.82). sIP-10 (p = 0.001), uIP-10 (p = 0.042), and uGalectin-9 (p = 0.009) were significantly increased in patients with active renal SLE compared to active renal AAV. sGalectin-9 (p < 0.001) and sIP-10 levels (p = 0.06) were decreased after 8 (5–22.5) months of treatment. Conclusion: sIP-10, uIP-10, sGalectin-9, and uSIGLEC-1 reflect global disease activity in SLE but do not outperform C3 and C4. sIP-10 and uIP-10 may be specific for active SLE compared to active AAV. sIP-10 and sGalectin-9 might be valuable in monitoring response after treatment.

Background/aim: Obesity is a chronic metabolic disease involving dysregulation of fat metabolism that affects 13% of the world’s population. Obesity has been linked to dyslipidemia with a lot of complication, including stroke, chronic kidney disease, fatty liver disease, and so on. One of the natural resources that have several potential effects including anticholesterol, antiobesity, and antidyslipidemia is the butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea/CT). CT’s petal has been found to contain high levels of anthocyanins and tannins that can inhibit the biosynthesis of cholesterol and lipid. This study aims to investigate the antiobesity and antidyslipidemic effects of Clitoria ternatea extract (CTE).Materials and …

Chemical biological radiological nuclear threats are at an important point in the agenda of world health today, as theycan cause mass deaths. B. mallei attracts attention as a potential biological warfare agent due to its features such as multidrug resistance,a rapid transmission mechanism via aerosol, the absence of a complete treatment protocol for the infection it causes, and the absence ofan approved vaccine for protection against the bacteria. B. mallei suspect samples must be studied by experienced personnel in biosafetylevel III laboratories. The objective of this study is to evaluate the clinical presentations and adverse outcomes of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) and assess the impact of SSc features on the clinical course of COVID-19.Materials and methods: In this multicenter, retrospective study, SSc patients with COVID-19 were included. Clinical features of SSc, along with detailed COVID-19 data, were extracted from medical records and patient interviews. Results: The study included 112 patients (mean age 51.4 ± 12.8 years; 90.2% female). SSc-associated interstitial lung disease (ILD) was evident in 57.1% of the patients. The findings revealed hospitalization in 25.5%, respiratory …

We aimed to search the relationship between the preoperative PVI (pleth variability index) and intraoperative respiratory parameters to reveal whether PVI can be used as a prediction tool in bariatric surgery.Materials and methods: Forty patients undergoing bariatric surgery were included. Noninvasive pleth variability index measured via finger probe before induction of general anesthesia. Following intubation each patient was ventilated in controlled mode. Intraoperative blood pressure, peak airway pressure, end-tidal CO2, SpO2, PEEP, and FiO2 were recorded every 5 min for the first 10 min and then every 10 min until extubation. Steroid and bronchodilator requirements were recorded. Results: The systolic pressure-PVI, …

Although high muscle strength worsens the sense of force, it is unknown whether there is a relationship betweenthis deterioration and the underlying molecular mechanisms. This study examined the relationship between decreased force sense (FS)acuity and strength-related gene expressions.Materials and methods: Maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) and FS (50% MVIC) tests were performed on the kneejoints of twenty-two subjects. The expression analyses were evaluated by qRT-PCR in blood samples taken before, after MVIC, after 50%MVIC, and 15 min after the test. Results: MVIC and FS error values were significantly correlated with each other (r = .659, p = .001). The qRT-PCR analyses …

Awake craniotomy (AC) maximizes the resection of lesions in eloquent brain areas while preserving functionality.Tumor delineation with intraoperative use of sodium fluorescein (NaFl) facilitates total resection. When used with AC, it may allowfor safe resection without increasing the risk of postoperative neurologic deficits. This study investigated the efficacy and safety of thecombined use of NaFl and AC for maximum safe resection in patients with brain metastases.Material and methods: Patients who underwent AC due to brain metastasis in the Department of Neurosurgery of Uludağ University’sFaculty of Medicine between January 1, 2018 and August 1, 2022, were retrospectively analyzed. The study comprised …

The study is aimed to determine the relationship between the delivery and breastfeeding history of the patients andthe clinicopathological properties of breast cancer.Materials and methods: A questionnaire was utilized for the study, which included the age of diagnosis, the number of children at thetime of diagnosis, the age of the children, and the breastfeeding period of each child. Results: The study included 828 patients. The median age at diagnosis was 47 years for parous women and 42 years for nonparouswomen (p < 0.001). The tumor size of the patients diagnosed within the breastfeeding period was significantly larger compared to theother patients. Estrogen and progesterone receptor positivity were lower in patients diagnosed during breastfeeding. Additionally, themean number of positive lymph nodes, dissected lymph nodes, and positive lymph node/dissected lymph node ratio in parous andbreastfed patients with a nonmetastatic disease were statistically significantly higher in multivariable analysis than those patients whowere nulliparous and have not breastfed. Conclusion: Breast cancer is seen at a later age in patients who are parous than those who have never given birth. Patients who areparous and have breastfed tend to present with a higher stage of the disease.
