Alopecia areata (AA) is a common cause of non-scarring alopecia characterized by patchy hair loss. AA is difficult to treat because of its chronic and inflammatory nature. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of low-dose systemic corticosteroids in the treatment of AA. Fifteen patients with AA were included in this study. Systemic prednisolone 10-15 mg/day on 2 consecutive days per week for 6 months was administered. Fourteen patients (93.3%) had patchy alopecia areata. One patient (6.3%) had alopecia universalis. This study was performed to determine the body fat percentage, fat distribution and plasma lipid-cholesterol levels of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). We compared the body fat percentage, distribution and lipid profile in 22 patients with definitive diagnosis of MS and age and height matched 16 healthy control subjects on normal diets. Poser criteria was used to determine the MS diagnosis. Glibenclamide (Glyburide), a widely used second-generation sulfonylurea hypoglycemic agent, is a known specific blocker of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) sensitive potassium (K+) channels. Although the blockage of the ATP dependent potassium channel reduces arrhythmia, it increases enfarct size. Yohimbine is an alpha-2 blocker that reduces infarct size as suggested by several studies. We hypothesized that a combination of yohimbine and glibenclamide may be more effective in reducing the arrhythmia following ligation. The purpose of this study was to determine the dentoalveolar and skeletal effects of a Goshgarian transpalatal arch (TPA) in unilateral maxillary first molar distalization. It is not clear whether Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection affects insulin levels and insulin sensitivity. We aimed to determine insulin sensitivity and beta cell function, and to evaluate serum lipids in subjects with and without Hp infection. Eighty non-obese young adult males, 40 of whom were Hp positive and 40 were negative, were included in the study. Two endoscopic biopsy specimens were obtained from each subject. The present study aimed to determine the correlation between the bactericidal activity of vancomycin and quinupristin/dalfopristin (Q/D) on Staphylococcus aureus isolates and their minimal inhibition concentrations. The in-vitro susceptibilities of the 99 S. aureus isolates to vancomycin and Q/D were investigated by agar dilution. Thirty methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and 30 methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) vancomycin and Q/D susceptible isolates were involved in time-kill studies. While both MRSA and MSSA isolates were susceptible to vancomycin, 96% of both isolates were determined as susceptible to Q/D. The sulcus angle of the femoral trochlea is particularly important for evaluating the patellofemoral joint. Our experimental study aimed to assess the osseous femoral sulcus angle radiologically in the right and left knees and osteologically in the right and left femurs in males and females. Glutathione is an important thiol-containing compound involved in the detoxification process in erythrocytes. Its thiol group reacts with a variety of xenobiotics in a glutathione S-transferase catalyzed reaction to form conjugates that are effluxed from the erythrocytes by an ATP dependent transport mechanism. A well studied experimental system is the transport of the conjugate of glutathione and 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene. We investigated whether N-acetyl-L-cysteine protects the free-SH content and restores 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene detoxification in erythrocytes or replaces glutathione in detoxification process in glutathione predepleted erythrocytes. This study was conducted to determine brucellosis seropositivity in patients suspected of having brucellosis who sought treatment at the Central Laboratory of Dicle University Medical Faculty Hospital in southeast Turkey (Diyarbakır). 20,663 serum samples were collected during the study (1 August 2001-31 December 2002), and 14,480 sera were tested in a 12-month period on a seasonal basis by Rose-Bengal slide agglutination (RBSA), and positive sera were titrated by standard tube agglutination (STA). Norfloxacin is a poorly water soluble drug, and to improve its solubility it was complexed with b-cyclodextrin (BCD). Several ocular patches/inserts of norfloxacin-b-cyclodextrin were prepared in hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) matrix. The influence of rate controlling membranes made of ethyl cellulose (EC) alone and in combination with polyvinyl pyrrolidone K30 (PVP K30) in different proportions on drug release kinetics was studied. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of weight loss induced by pharmacotherapy combined with a hypocaloric diet for a period of 8-weeks on maximal work (Wmax) production capacity and aerobic fitness in obese patients. Twelve obese females were put on an integrated energy restricted diet with orlistat supplement 3 x 120 mg/day. Each patient performed 3 incremental ramp exercise tests using an electromagnetically braked cycle ergometer: one at onset, one at the end of 4-weeks and one at the end of the 8-weeks to determine Wmax production capacity. Exposure to 70% N₂O evokes a robust antinociceptive effect in C57BL/6 (B6) but not in DBA/2 (D2) inbred mice. This study was conducted to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) in the mouse genome that might determine responsiveness to N₂O. Offspring from the F₂ generation bred from B6 and D2 progenitors exhibited a broad range of responsiveness to N₂O antinociception as determined by the acetic acid-induced abdominal constriction test. LP-BM5 retrovirus-infected C57BL/6 mice develop splenomegaly, lymphadenopathy, hypergammaglobulinemia, and immunodeficiency; thus, this disease has been named mouse AIDS. In this syndrome, CD154/CD40 interactions are required for but do not mediate disease by upregulation of CD80 or CD86. We report here that there is nonetheless a necessity for CD40 signaling competence, specifically an intact tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 6 (TRAF 6) binding site.

Quorum sensing triggers virulence factor expression in medically important bacterial pathogens in response to a density-dependent increase in one or more autoinducing pheromones. Here, we show that phagocyte-derived oxidants target these autoinducers for inactivation as an innate defense mechanism of the host. In a skin infection model, expression of phagocyte NADPH oxidase, myeloperoxidase, or inducible nitric oxide synthase was critical for defense against a quorum-sensing pathogen, Staphylococcus aureus, but not for defense against a quorum sensing-deficient mutant.
