Macrofungi Of Sinop Province, Ahmet Afyon, Dursun Yağiz, Muhsi̇n Konuk

Turkish Journal of Botany

This study was based on macrofungi specimens collected from Sinop province between 1998 and 2000. According to the field and laboratory work, 170 taxa belonging to 32 families have been identified and 32 of these taxa were added to Turkey's macromycota flora as new records.

A Taxonomic Study On The Phytoplankton Of Lake Uluabat (Bursa), Di̇dem Karacaoğlu, Şükran Dere, Nurhayat Dalkiran

Turkish Journal of Botany

The phytoplanktonic algal flora of Lake Uluabat was studied during July 1998- June 1999 by analysing samples taken each month from 5 sampling stations. Identified taxa (331) of the phytoplanktonic community are as follows: 152 Bacillariophyta, 89 Chlorophyta, 42 Cyanophyta, 31 Euglenophyta, 11 Dinophyta, 4 Cryptophyta and 2 Chrysophyta. Algal species which live in eutrophic water are dominant in the phytoplankton. Most of the species are characterised by their widespread presence, although it is also noted that some taxa are rarely found in Turkey.

Field studies were carried out in the Besni district between 2001 and 2002, and macrofungi samples were collected. As a result of laboratory studies, 56 species belonging to 20 families in Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes were identified.

Taxonomical And Ecological Investigations On Some Geophytes Growing Around Denizli Province (Turkey), Ali̇ Çeli̇k, Mehmet Çi̇çek, Gürkan Semi̇z, Mustafa Karincali

Turkish Journal of Botany

In this study, the taxonomical and ecological features of some geophytes which grow naturally around Denizli province have been investigated. From this research, which was performed between 1996 and 2000, 31 species belonging to 8 families have been determined. Thirteen soil parameters from 31 localities were analysed in order to establish plant and soil relations. The ecological spectra of the species are considered, comprising 16 species in macchie and phrygana (50%); 1 species in fields (1%); 7 species in high mountains (23%) and 8 species in forests (26%).

Macrofungi Of Samsun Province, Aysun Pekşen, Gürsel Karaca

Turkish Journal of Botany

A total of 169 species of macrofungi were determined in Samsun province between 1997 and 2001, of which 19 belonged to the Ascomycota, 149 to the Basidiomycota and one to the Myxomycota. Among these, 51 species were edible, 67 inedible, 28 edible but not worthwhile or best avoided because of possible confusion with poisonous species, and 12 species were poisonous. The edibility of 11 species was unknown.

Hedwigia ciliata (Hedw.) Ehrh. ex P.Beauv. var. leucophaea Bruch & Schimp. is recorded as a new taxon for the bryophyte flora of Turkey. It belongs to the H. ciliata complex sensu lata that consists of three different taxa: H. stellata, H. ciliata var. ciliata, and H. ciliata var. leucophaea. As all three taxa occur in Turkey, a key to the species, descriptions, illustrations of the diagnostic characters, as well as their distribution in Turkey are presented.

Taxonomy And Conservation Status Of Acantholimon Laxiflorum Boiss. Ex Bunge (Plumbaginaceae), Musa Doğan, Hayri̇ Duman, Gali̇p Akaydin

Turkish Journal of Botany

Acantholimon laxiflorum Boiss. ex Bunge (Plumbaginaceae), a local endemic species in Turkey, was subjected to taxonomic analysis in order to clarify its taxonomic status, because this species seems to have been wrongly treated and overlooked since it was first described by Boissier. The species is restricted to the east of Arsuz (C5 Hatay, Turkey) along dry riverbank, where it grows in rocky places on serpentine rocks. A full description and an illustration of the species are given, along with some additional information dealing with its ecology, phytogeography and conservation status.

Five species belong to the class Ascomycetes and 54 to the class Basidiomycetes and they are as follows; Ascomycetes: Helvellaceae: 1, Morchellaceae: 3, Nectriaceae: 1, Basidiomycetes: Lycoperdaceae: 3, Sclerotermatacea: 1, Tremellaceae: 1, Ganodermataceae: 1, Rhizopogonaceae: 1, Polyporaceae: 8, Schizophyllaceae: 1, Nidulariaceae: 1, Pleurotaceae: 2, Boletaceae: 5, Tricholomataceae: 8, Agaricaceae: 9, Coprinaceae: 7, Strophariaceae: 1, Cortinariaceae: 2, Russulaceae: 3. Coprinus fimetarius (L.) Fr., Coprinus silvaticus (L.: Fr.) Fr., and Cortinarius violaceus (L.: Fr.) Fr. are new records for Turkish mycoflora.

The macrofungi collected during field trips from the Değirmenboğazı picnic area between 1998 and 2001 were investigated taxonomically. As a result of these field and laboratory studies, 54 taxa belonging to 19 families were identified. These species are presented as a list. Eleven of these taxa are new records to the Turkish Macromycota.

Macrofungi were collected during field trips in the Ağrı district between 1997 and 2000. At the end of field and laboratory studies, 45 taxa belonging to 3 classes and 18 families were identified. Three of these, Pluteus ephebeus (Fr.:Fr.) Gill. (Pluteaceae), Coprinus auricomus Pat. (Coprinaceae) and Inocybe tigrina Heim. (Cortinariaceae), are new records for the mycoflora of Turkey.

Structure Of The Pericarp In Some Amaranthus L. (Amaranthaceae) Species And Its Taxonomic Significance, Mihai Costea, Giles Waines, Andrew Sanders

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

In order to determine their taxonomic significance, 10 pericarp structure characters were scored for 21 Amaranthus L. taxa. In many, pericarp patterns permit recognition of the taxa as species. Differences between cultivated taxa and their wild relatives offer new arguments against their taxonomic union. The relationships between other closely related taxa are also analyzed (A. quitensis and A. hybridus: A. bouchonii and A. powellii; A. hybridus and A. powellii; A. blitum and A. emarginatus). Mechanisms of dehiscence and terminology for the fruit of Amaranthus are considered.

This study was carried out on macrofungi samples collected in Bitlis province between 1997 and 2000. As a result of field and laboratory studies, 60 species belonging to 17 families were identified. Four of them, Coprinus xanthotrix Romagn., Psathyrella atomata (Quél) Fr., Rhodocybe fallax (Quél) Sing. and Polyporus meridionalis (David) Jahn., are new records for Turkey.

In this study, three Cyanophyceae species new for Turkey are reported. These specimens are Oscillatoria bonnemaisonii (P.Crouan & H.Crouan) P.Crouan & H.Crouan, Microcoleus chthonoplastes Thuret (Oscillatoriales) and Dichothrix spiralis Fritsch (Nostocales). They were determined to be epiphytic on the other algae which were found at the upper-infralittoral zone of the bay of İskenderun (Mediterranean Sea, Turkey).

Yuccas (Yucca, Agavaceae) are an easily recognizable constituent of the vegetation of the International Four Corners; an area made up of portions of Arizona, New Mexico, Sonora and Chihuahua. We recognize three species as native to the region, Yucca baccata, Y. elata and Y. madrensis, together with interspecific hybrids, and document for the first time naturally occurring intersectional hybridization between baccate-fruited (sect. Yucca) and capsular-fruited (sect. Chaenocarpa) species. A revision of Autophagomyces (Laboulbeniales) was made based on a comparative morphological study of new collections and 16 species included in the genus by Thaxter in the final volume of his monograph published in 1931 and by others more recently. The concept of Autophagomyces (species on Anthicidae, Phalacridae, and Scapidiidae [Coleoptera]) was narrowed and comprises 12 species, four of them new, i.e., A. hammondii, A. mexicanus, A. protuberans, and A. ramosus. A new genus of Laboulbeniales (Laboulbeniaceae: Stigmatomycetinae), Monandromyces, was described. Its type species, M. hemipteralis, was based on Autophagomyces hemipteralis. The latter, which parasitizes a riparian bug, a species of Microvelia (Heteroptera: Veliidae), was characterized by Roland Thaxter in 1931. Ten new species of Monandromyces- taken from members of three genera of Veliidae-were described as follows: M. australis, M. falcatus, M. polhemorum, M. protuberans, M. tenuistipitis, and M. umbonatus (on Microvelia spp.); M. neoalardi (on Neoalardus sp.); and M. elongates, M. longispinae, and M. pseudoveliae (on Pseudovelia spp.). An Expanded Circumscription Of Bouteloua (Gramineae: Choridoideae): New Combinations And Names, J. Travis Columbus

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Cladistic analysis of nuclear ribosomal and chloroplast DNA sequences has revealed that the New World grass genus Bouteloua (Chloridoideae) is not monophyletic. Indeed, some species of Bouteloua are more closely related to species in other genera than to congeners. The problem was dealt with by expanding the circumscription of Bouteloua to include species formerly positioned in the satellite genera Buchloe (1 species), Buchlomimus/em> (1), Cathestecum/em> (4), Cyclostachya/em> (1), Griffithsochloa (1), Opizia (2), Pentarrhaphis (3), Pringleochloa (1), and Soderstromia(1). Thirteen new combinations and names were necessary. As here circumscribed, Bouteloua is monophyletic and comprises 57 species.

Recent phylogenetic analyses within Polemoniaceae have provided evidence that the current circumscriptionof Gilia recognizes and gives taxonomic status to a polyphyletic assemblage of species. Four new species of Triceromyces (Laboulbeniales) parasitic on Hydrometra (Heteroptera: Hydrometridae) were described and aspects of their morphology and development were discussed and illustrated with line drawings. Two of the species, T. floridanus and T. elongatus, are monoecious; T. floridanus, known only from Florida, U.S.A., has features allying it with T. elongatus, which ranges from Madagascar and Kenya in Africa to India, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka in Asia. During the post-Darwinian history of taxonomy, the Linnaean hierarchy has maintained its role as a means for representing hierarchical taxonomic relationships. During the same period, the principle of descent has taken on an increasingly important role as the basis for reformulated versions of fundamental taxonomic concepts and principles. Early in this history, the principle of descent provided an explanation for the existence of taxa and implied a nested, hierarchical structure for taxonomic relationships. Recent studies of genetic variation within and among populations and phylogenetic estimates have provided evidence bearing on the evolutionary history and taxonomy of Styrax in California (S. redivivus). In this paper, data from these studies are further analyzed and integrated with new data from morphology to gain insight into the nature and taxonomic significance of character variation within this species. Six morphological characters thought to be important in the delimitation of infraspecific taxa within S. redivivus were measured on 52 herbarium specimens and analyzed with Pearson correlations and multivariate methods. This key has been produced to make identification of Maireana species (the bluebushes) easier in the arid shrublands region of Western Australia. It attempts to use everyday terms rather than technical botanical terms wherever possible and includes an illustrated diagram for ease of identification. A new dioecious genus of Laboulbeniaceae (Laboulbeniales), Corylophomyces, was established to accommodate five species parasitizing Corylophidae (Coleoptera; Cucujoidea): C. peyerimhoffii (≡Cryptandromyces peyerimhoffit); C. sericoderi (≡Autophagomyces sericoderi); C. sarawakensis (≡A. sarawakensis); and two new species, C. reflexus and C. weirii. A key to the taxa was given and all were illustrated with line drawings. Corylophomyces was placed in Amorphomycetinae sensu Tavares. The other genera included in this subtribe by Tavares in 1985, i.e., Amorphomyces, Dioicomyces, Nanomyces, Rhizopodomyces, and Tetrandromyces, were compared with one another and with the new genus.

The biovulate subfamily Oldfieldioideae of Euphorbiaceae, characterized by spiny pollen, is an otherwise apparently diverse assemblage of mostly Southern Hemisphere trees and shrubs that traditionally have been allied with genera of Phyllanthoideae and Porantheroideae sensu Pax and Hoffmann. Although fairly diverse anatomically, the following structures characterize the subfamily with only a few exceptions: pinnate brochidodromous venation with generally randomly organized tertiary and higher order venation; foliar and petiolar glands absent; unicellular or unbranched uniseriate trichomes; latex absent; mucilaginous epidermis or hypodermis; brachyparacytic stomata; vessel elements with simple perforation plates and alternate, often very small, intervascular pits; thick-walled nonseptate imperforate tracheary …
