Laboulbeniales On Semiaquatic Heteroptera. Vi. The Genus Tavaresiella, Richard K. Benjamin
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Majewski's original circumscriptions of Tavaresiella (Laboulbeniales; Laboulbeniaceae; Stigmatomycetinae) and its type species, T. hebri, were emended in this study of the genus. In addition, three new species were described, T. majewskii, T. polhemi, and T. santamariae. These, like the type species, occurred on true bugs of the family Hebridae (Heteroptera). A key to the species was provided, and ali were described and illustrated with line drawings and photographs. Aspects of ascomatic structure and development were summarized, and the genus was compared with other genera of the subtribe having similar characteristics.

Cupulomyces, A New Genus Of Laboulbeniales (Asomycetes) Based On Stigmatomyces Lasiochili, Richard K. Benjamin

A new genus of Laboulbeniales, Cupulomyces, is described. Its type species, C. lasiochili, is based on Stigmatomyces lasiochili, originally described by Roland Thaxter in I 917. This taxon subsequently has been classified in two other genera, Hesperomyces and Acompsomyces. Structure and development of the thallus of C. lasiochili are described and illustrated with photographs and line drawings. Distinctive features of the receptacle, appendage, and perithecium warrant recognition of a new genus.

This update of my classification of the flowering plants, or Angiospermae, is based upon about 800 pertinent books, monographs, and other botanical papers published since my last synopsis appeared in the Nordic Journal of Science in 1983. Also I have narrowed my family- and ordinal-gap concepts to bring acceptance of family and ordinal limits more in line with those of current taxonomists. This new information and the shift in my phylogenetic philosophy have caused significant changes in my interpretation of relationships and numbers and content of taxa. Allium fimbriatum in California and northern Baja California causes frequent difficulty in identification. The species, as defined by Ownbey, comprises nine varieties and is characterized by great morphologic diversity. No single character or suite of characters separates this species from others in the A. sanbornii alliance. This investigation was undertaken to survey the large number of herbarium specimens that have accumulated since Ownbey's study and to observe all of the taxa in the field or garden, something not accomplished by Ownbey. A new genus ofLaboulbeniales, with two species, Phalacrichomyces normalis (type) and P. anomalus, is described from Phalacrichus diligens (Coleoptera: Dryopoidea; Limnichidae). Phalacrichomyces is placed in the Stigmatomycetinae of the Laboulbeniaceae where it appears to be most nearly related to Stemmatomyces and Synandromyces among the other 39 genera of the subtribe. The new taxa are characterized and salient features of the structure and development of their ascomata are summarized and illustrated with photographs and line drawings. Nucleic acids and proteins provide useful characters for the elucidation of evolutionary relationships. Those protein molecules, e.g., legumins, which are subject to less influence of selection processes, have proven to be most valuable as diagnostic characters in phylogenetic studies. Three systematic investigations conducted using comparative serological legumin analyses are discussed as contributions aiding botanists' understanding of a natural system of classification.

Lectotypes are designated for Amanoa caribaea Krug & Urban and A. guianensis Aublet; presumed syntypes of the latter taxon are shown to be heterogeneous by inclusion of a previously unrecognized species. Four new species of Amanoa are described: A. congesta from French Guiana and northeastern Brazil; A. gracillima from Manaus, Brazil; A. nanayensis from Amazonian Peru and adjacent Colombia and Brazil; and A. neglecta from French Guiana and Surinam. Amanoa sinuosa is proposed as a new name for the later homonym A. robusta Leal. A key to the 13 neotropical species is presented.

Monardella Stebbinsii (Lamiaceae), A New Serpentine Endemic Species From The Northern Sierra Nevada, Plumas County, California, Clare B. Hardham, Jim A. Bartel

Monardella stebbinsii (Lamiaceae ), a new species from the northern Sierra Nevada of Plumas County, California, is described and illustrated. Characterized by ovate leaves, multiple verticillasters per infiorascence, a matlike habit, reddish papery bracts, and purplish-red leaves with a soft white pubescence, the species is not closely related to any other species of the genus. The new species is apparently restricted to the central portion of a serpentine outcrop located north and east of the confluence of the North Fork of the Feather River and its East Branch.

Dudleya Cymosa Subsp. Costafolia (Crassulaceae), A New Subspecies From The Southern Sierra Nevada, Tulare County, California, Jim A. Bartel, James R. Shevock

Dudleya cymosa subsp. costafolia, a new subspecies from the southern Sierra Nevada, Tulare County, California, is described and illustrated. Along with bright yellow flowers, the cespitose plant produces numerous, small rosettes with rib-shaped linear to linear-oblanceolate leaves, which are unique to the subspecies. The authors have searched numerous other rock outcrops, especially limestone, in the general area for additional plants with no success. Dudleya cymosa subsp. costafolia evidently is restricted to a solitary limestone outcrop north of the South Fork of the Middle Fork of the Tule River.

Taxonomy And Morphology Of Aporomyces (Laboulbeniales), Richard K. Benjamin

Thaxter's original circumscription of Aporomyces (Laboulbeniales) is emended in this study of the eight known species of the genus, three of them new: A. byrrhini, A. lutrochi, and A. physemi. The new species, as well as A. subulatus, A. szaboi, A. trinitatis, and A. uniflagellatus (type), are dioecious and occur on beetles belonging to the Limnichidae (Coleoptera: Dryopoidea). The eighth species, A. perpusillus, appears to be monoecious and occurs on Staphylinidae (Coleoptera: Staphylinoidea). All taxa are described and illustrated with line drawings and/or photographs. The name Carex poeppigii (sect. Echinochlaenae) is validated and a new combination in South American Carex, C. vixdentata (sect. Spirostachyae), is made here. Also, the taxonomic status of C. aueri is discussed, and this name is placed in the synonymy of C. reichei (sect. Arenariae).

Astragalus ertterae, a new species from pinyon pine woodlands, southern Sierra Nevada, Kern County, California, is described and illustrated. This remarkable new species is morphologically closest to A. bicristatus in sect. Bicristati but differs in its dwarf stature, pilose indumentum, short peduncles, somewhat smaller flowers, and especially in a pod only half as long and proportionately twice as plump.

A revision of the genus Anoda is presented that recognizes 23 species, of which ten are described as new. The genus includes annual herbs, subshrubs, and occasionally shrubs and occurs from the southern United States to Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile. Most of this distributional range, however, is accounted for by a single species, A. cristata, which also occurs as an adventive in a few other parts of the world. The genus is principally Mexican, all of the species occurring within that country. Anoda is closely allied to the genus Periptera, also a Mexican genus, and the two genera share …

The Sierra Madre del Sur of Pacific coastal Mexico has been of limited accessibility and therefore not well explored botanically. Only G. B. Hinton and E. Langlasse have made significant collections from the area. More recent collections by the authors have resulted in the recognition of nine new species, described herein as follows: Acanthaceae—Elytraria rnexieana; Malvaceae—Bastardiastrurn batesii, Gossypiurn schwendirnanii, Hibiscus zygornorphus, Kosteletzkya flavicentrum, Periptera lobelioides, Sida fastuosa, and Sida prolifiea; and Tumeraceae—Piriquetia mexieana. Six species of Triceromyces (Laboulbeniales), including the type, T. balazucii (on Hebridae), parasitic on semiaquatic Hemiptera, were studied at the light-microscopic level. Descriptions are provided for all of the taxa, and features of developmental morphology are described, compared, and illustrated with photographs and line drawings. Four species are described as new: T. hebri (on Hebridae), T. hydrometrae (on Hydrometridae), and T. biformis and T. bullatus (on Mesoveliidae). The species growing on Hebridae and Hydrometridae are monoecious. The two species on Mesoveliidae develop monoecious and dioecious morphs, which occur together on the same host individual. Allium tribracteatum and related species present a confusing array in California. Previous attempts at classification have been largely unsuccessful and keys that are available are unworkable. Herbarium and field studies were initiated to ascertain if previously overlooked characteristics could be found that would elucidate relationships within the group. Members of the complex were examined morphologically and cytologically. Based on these investigations four of the seven previously described taxa are considered valid: A. cratericola, A. obtusum, A. tribracteatum, and A. yosemitense. Allium tribracteatum is redefined and A. obtusum is divided into two varieties. Allium obtusum var. conspicuum …

Morphology And Relationships Of A New Species Of Microsomyces (Ascomycetes: Laboulbeniales) From Illinois, Richard K. Benjamin

Microsomyces telephani, a new species of Laboulbeniaceae, is described from collections found on Telephanus velox (Coleoptera: Cucujidae) from Illinois. Features of development and maturity of the new species are illustrated with photographs and line drawings. Microsomyces telephani differs from the type and previously only known species of the genus, M. psammoechi, in its larger, more highly corticated receptacle, which bears secondary appendages, and in its larger primary appendage, which typically bears several antheridial phialides. Among known genera of Laboulbeniales, Microsomyces is thought to be most closely related to Cucujomyces.

Although known to botanical science for 285 years, the genus Picrodendron Planchon has been poorly understood for most of this time. The most pervasive problem has been that of discerning familial relationships, and there have been additional difficulties in typifying the generic name (Hayden & Reveal, 1980) and in distinguishing its three nominate species. This paper provides a systematic treatment for Picrodendron and demonstrates its relationships with Euphorbiaceae subfam. Oldfieldioideae Kohler & Webster as evidenced by data on gross morphology, palynology, anatomy, and cytology.

Petalacte has been in continuous use for this genus of 1-3 species since proposed by D. Don. The only exception was Lessing's misuse of Petalolepis Cassini, from which he excluded the two original Australian species and substituted two from S. Africa. Lessing was not followed by later authors.T he genus was recently revised by Lundgren (in Bot. Notiser 127: 119-124. 1974) and this revision may be consulted for full references.

The series Trees of Western Australia, which appeared in The Journal of Agriculture of Western Australia, was commenced in 1952 by Charles Austin Gardner, Government Botanist and Curator of the Western Australian Herbarium from 1929 to1960. Until his death in 1970 Gardner published in the series 29 articles, dealing with 117 species of Eucalyptus, the last article appearing in 1966.
The articles are of historical and scientific interest. They contain valuable original information on the phytogeography and taxonomy of over half of the Western Australian species of Eucalyptus, based largely on Gardner's personal observations made in the course …
