Winter Surveys Of Cotinus Obovatus (American Smoketree) In The Ozark Mountains, Gary R. Graves

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Cotinus obovatus (American smoketree) is a rare deciduous tree with a relictual distribution in southeastern North America. Efforts to map its fine-scale geographic distribution in the Ozark Mountains have been limited to the growing season when the distinctive blooming panicles and foliage facilitate detection in hardwood-cedar woodlands. I describe the physiognomic traits of leafless C. obovatus that permit effective population mapping in winter landscapes. Clumped growth and diagonally leaning stems facilitate detection at a distance. Bark texture, twig morphology, and sap odor confirm the identity of the tree at close range.

Rates of tree mortality in California and the Pacific Northwest have greatly increased in recent years, driven largely by pest and pathogen outbreaks as well as the effects of hotter, warmer droughts. While there have been a multitude of regional-scale assessments of mortality and forest decline, landscape-level studies are necessary to better identify forests that are most vulnerable to decline and to anticipate future changes. Little is known about the pollination biology of the Pacific Coast Irises (Iris: series Californicae, hereafter PCI), especially who visits and pollinates their flowers. In general, Iris flowers are considered bee-pollinated, however, flies in the genus Eulonchus (Acroceridae) are known to visit some PCI members. Therefore, I assessed the relative importance of Eulonchus and other insect visitors to the pollination of a rare PCI species native to the Siskiyou Mountains, I. bracteata.

Recently, native and managed colonies of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and other insects, have experienced a largescale declines. In an effort to restore habitat for pollinators, the United States Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) created the CP-42 Pollinator Habitat conservation practice under the Conservation Reserve Program. This program pays private landowners to restore habitat for pollinator species with ecological and economic importance. To qualify for the program, CP-42 seed mixes must include:

In preparation for the publication of the Manual de Plantas de Costa Rica, new species, names, combinations, and synonymies are provided in six genera of Acanthaceae: Anisacanthus, Chamaeranthemum, Dicliptera, Justicia, Ruellia and Stenostephanus. The new species are A. grace-woodiae, J. altior, J. lithophila and S. chavesii. A new name at the species level, R. leonardiana, is provided for R. tubiflora var. hirsuta. Determination of in-season N requirement for corn (Zea mays L.) is challenging due to interactions of genotype, environment, and management. Machine learning (ML), with its predictive power to tackle complex systems, may solve this barrier in the development of locally based N recommendations. Prairies once covered approximately 85% of Iowa, but due to extensive habitat loss less than 0.1% of native prairies remain (Smith 1998). Habitat loss in Iowa has been driven by agricultural expansion and intensification, and has resulted in the decline of many native insect pollinators. To curb habitat loss and restore habitat for pollinators, USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) provides private landowners incentives to enroll agricultural land into the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) Pollinator Habitat (CP-42) practice. To date, there has been no formal assessment of practice success (i.e., post-seeding forb establishment)

In this study, we assess forb establishment in randomly selected CP42 fields near Cedar Falls, Iowa

The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is a land conservation program administered by the US Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency (FSA) to improve water quality, prevent soil erosion, and create wildlife habitat.

This study aimed to compare the efficiency of logistic regression and maximum entropy models for distribution modelling of plant species habitats in the rangelands of western Taftan, southeastern Iran. Vegetation cover was sampled using a systematic-randomized method. Soils were sampled at 0?30 and 30?60 cm depths through digging of eight soil profiles. The agreement between predictive maps generated by models with documented maps of habitats indicated that logistic regression was able to predict the distribution of Artemisia aucheri and Artemisia sieberi habitats at excellent (kappa value = 0.95) and weak (kappa value = 0.39) levels, respectively. Roselliniella Lecideae Sp. Nov. And Other Interesting Lichenicolous Fungi From The Northern Black Sea Region (Ukraine), Valeriy Darmostuk, Alexander Khodosovtsev, Ganna Naumovich, Nadiia Kharechko

The lichenicolous fungus Roselliniella lecideae sp. nov. on Lecidea fuscoatra is described from Ukraine. It is characterized by globose ostiolate perithecia, 2-3 septate hyaline periphyses, unitunicate 8-spored asci, and unicellular ellipsoid brown ascospores. This species, close to Roselliniella microthelia, has shorter periphyses, smaller asci, and ascospores, and its hosts. Brackelia lunkei, Henfellra muriformis, Lichenoconium aeruginosum, Lichenohendersonia squamarinae, Lichenostigma dimelaenae, Sphaerellothecium atryneae, Stigmidium epistigmellum, S. stygnospilum, Pronectria xanthoriae, Refractohilum achromaticum, and Zwackhiomyces lithoiceae are reported for the first time from Ukraine. The prickly pear (Opuntia ficus-indica L. Miller) is a xerophytic cactus species widely cultivated in arid and semiarid regions worldwide and used in rehabilitation programs of rangelands in Algeria since 1990. This study analyzed the diversity and functional traits of plant species established in prickly pear plantations growing under arid and semiarid climates. A 3-year plant assessment (2008-2010) was carried out using ecological descriptors (abundance, species richness, diversity indices, disturbance index, and Jaccard index) and plant functional traits (life forms, chorological types, dispersal types, Grime's, Noy-Meir's strategies, and morphological types). This study is an overview of the importance of soil nutrients for the maintenance of Vuralia turcica, which is an endemic in Turkey due to its natural habitats. Electrical conductivity, pH, and mineral element content (macroelements: nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and sodium, and microelements: boron, cadmium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel, lead, and zinc) were analyzed in 21 soil samples taken at 30?60 m depth at 21 points from 8 different locations where V. turcica was growing to determine nutrient content, which is important for soil fertility and controls the crop yield. The present study provides information on the development of the female and male gametophytes and seed ontogeny characteristics for Trichloris, and it discusses their taxonomic significance to the family Poaceae. Trichloris species are characterized by having 2?3 stamens per floret, tetrasporangiate anthers, a monocotyledonous development of the anther wall, a single middle layer of common origin with the tapetum, fibrous thickening in the cell walls of the endothecium, and a secretory tapetum. These characteristics are constant within Poaceae. Eleven Taraxacum species were given from Poland for the first time: T. praecox from the section Borea , T. fusciflorum from the section Hamata , and T. clarum , T. praestabile , T. xanthostigma , T. floccosum , T. lundense , T. ottonis , T. subborgvallii , T. pittochromatum , and T. subleucopodum from the section Taraxacum . A photograph of the herbarium specimen from Poland and distributions in Poland and Europe were given for each species.

This research aims to evaluate the photosynthesis-related parameters in chromosome segment substitution lines (CSSL), containing drought tolerant region from DH212 in a ‘KDML105’ genetic background. Screening at seedling stage indicated that CSSL4 was more tolerant to drought stress than ‘KDML105’ with the higher maximum quantum yield of Photosystem II (Fv/Fm). At vegetative stage, CSSL4 tended to have the higher level of light-saturated net photosynthetic rate (PNmax), stomatal conductance (gs), electron transport rate (ETR) and effective quantum yield of photosystem II photochemistry (FPSII), when compared to the ‘KDML105’ after 9 days of water withholding. Strawberry is an excellent source of natural antioxidants with high capacity of scavenging free radicals.

This study evaluated the effects of two plant probiotic bacteria, Bacillus amylolequefaciens BChi1 and Paraburkholderia fungorum BRRh-4 on growth, fruit yield and antioxidant contents in strawberry fruits. Root dipping of seedlings (plug plants) followed by spray applications of both probiotic bacteria in the field on foliage significantly increased fruit yield (up to 48%) over non-treated control. Enhanced fruit yield likely to be linked with higher root and shoot growth, individual and total fruit weight/plant and production of phytohormone by the probiotic bacteria applied on plants. …
