Archaeobotanical Studies At The Urartian Site Of Ayanis In Van Province, Eastern Turkey, Tuğba Solmaz, Emel Oybak Dönmez

Archaeobotanical macro remains recovered from the Ayanis fortress and the outer town of the Urartian period of the Iron Age (685-645 BC), located in the area of Van (Turkey), were investigated. Most of the remains were charred due to fire. Large quantities of Hordeum vulgare L. (hulled barley), Panicum miliaceum L. (broomcorn millet), and Setaria italica (L.) P.Beauvois (foxtail millet) were found at the study site, indicating the storage of agricultural surplus. Other types of cereal remains were also recorded, including Triticum aestivum L. (bread wheat) and Secale cereale L. (rye). Ground wheat grains were also recovered and their starch …

Airborne Pollen Content Of Kuşadası, Aycan Tosunoğlu, Ayşe Yeni̇gün, Adem Biçakçi, Kayi Eli̇açik

Atmospheric pollen grains of Kuşadası were captured using Durham samplers and investigated in 2005. The total number of pollen grains and the pollen grains/cm^2 were calculated from slides that were changed weekly. During the study period a total of 12,980 pollen grains/cm^2 belonging to 44 identified taxa and unidentified pollen grains were recorded at 2 stations. At the first station (S1), 7346 pollen grains were counted per cm^2, while only 5634 pollen grains were counted at the second station (S2). The phytosociological properties of the forest, shrub, and steppe vegetation of Kızıldağ (Isparta province) were investigated in 2010 and 2011. The vegetation of the area was analysed using a 3-dimensional ordination technique based on the Braun-Blanquet method. As a result, 5 new plant associations were determined as belonging to forest, shrub, and steppe vegetation and classified syntaxonomically. The associations and their higher units are as follows. Some species belonging to the genus Orchis Tourn. ex L. (Orchidaceae) are of great economic importance as their tubers or corms are used to produce a hot beverage called salep. Polyphenol profiles can suffer quali-quantitative modifications as the plant modifies its phenological condition. The objective of this work was to determine if there is a rhythm of production in the synthesis of polyphenols according to the phenological condition in the leaves, roots, and rhizomes of Smilax campestris Griseb. The plant material analysed corresponded to individuals of a colony of S. campestris collected in different phenological conditions. Standard methodology was used for the chromatographic profiles of flavonols (kaempferol, quercetin, isorhamnetin, and their glycosides) and proanthocyanidins (procyanidin and propelargonidin) and quantification of total phenol, condensed tannins, and flavonols. The moss flora of Artvin Province (Ardanuç, Şavşat, Borçka, Murgul, and Arhavi districts) in Turkey was studied between 2009 and 2011. A total of 167 moss taxa (belonging to 80 genera and 33 families) were recorded within the study area. Among these, 3 species [Dicranella schreberiana (Hedw.) Dixon, Dicranodontium asperulum (Mitt.) Broth., and Campylopus pyriformis (Schultz) Brid.] are new records from the investigated area for the moss flora of Turkey. Scotomyces subviolaceus (Peck) Jülich, Geoglossum lineare Hakelier, and Chlorencoelia versiformis (Pers.) J.R.Dixon were recorded for the first time in Turkey. The new taxa are described and illustrated. Scotomyces Jülich and Geoglossum Pers. are also new records at genus level.

A Contribution To Taxonomy Of Centaurea Including Psephellus (Asteraceae) Based On Anatomical And Molecular Data, Özhan Aydi̇n, Kami̇l Çoşkunçelebi̇, Mutlu Gültepe, Murat Erdem Güzel

Seven Centaurea L. s.l (Asteraceae) taxa endemic to Turkey were examined in terms of anatomical and molecular aspects to contribute to their taxonomic positions. Numerical analysis of the 13 anatomical traits showed that average row number of collenchyma and the arrangements of the vascular bundles in the stem, leaf type, and abaxial surface of leaf epidermal tissue were important to determine the investigated taxa. It was also found that the 7 investigated taxa were grouped into 2 distinct clusters based on anatomical traits and combined nrDNAITS/cpDNA data.

The genus Ferulago W.Koch is represented with 49 species in the world and 34 species in Turkey. In this study, comparative fruit anatomical properties based on mericarp shape in transverse section of 27 Ferulago species grown in Turkey are given. A description of Ferulago cypria H.Wolff, which was mentioned as a new record in an unpublished postdoctoral thesis, is also given. As a result of this study, we are able to identify and classify the species of this genus by using anatomical features of the fruit. The levels of inorganic (Na^+, K^+, Ca^+^2, Mg^+^2, Cl^-) and organic (proline, carbohydrates) osmolytes and quaternary ammonium compounds were measured in 3 endemic Limonium Mill. species [L. lilacinum (Boiss. & Bal.) Wagenitz, L. iconicum (Boiss. & Heldr.) Kuntze, and L. anatolicum Hedge] of Lake Tuz in central Anatolia, Turkey. Rose breeders need reliable and efficient germination protocols to exploit all viable embryos in their breeding programs. In this study, different treatment combinations were assessed to overcome the mechanical resistance of the pericarp and enhance germination of rose seeds obtained from hybridisation among hybrids roses. In the 3 treatments, 30 days of a warm temperature followed by 60 days of cold stratification and 30% sulphuric acid treatment for 10 min proved more effective in getting higher seed germination (18.54%) and seed vigour index (261.18) of the progenies. The mature female gametophyte in Trifolium pratense L., a natural tetraploid plant, consists of 7 cells: the egg cell, 2 synergids, the central cell, and 3 antipodal cells. This type of mature female gametophyte is known as polygonum. The central cell occupies the largest portion of the mature female gametophyte and the polar nuclei are situated close to the egg apparatus. The cytoplasm of the central cell is rich in organelles. The current investigation is concerned with the histological features of Senna occidentalis (L.) Link (coffee senna plant). The anatomical structure of different vegetative and reproductive organs was investigated weekly or fortnightly, according to the investigated organ, throughout the growing season. The bark structure of Quercus faginea Lam. in trees 30-60 years old grown in Portugal is described. The rhytidome consists of 3-5 sequential periderms alternating with secondary phloem. The phellem is composed of 2-5 layers of cells with thin suberised walls and narrow (1-3 seriate) tangential band of lignified thick-walled cells. The phelloderm is thin (2-3 seriate). Secondary phloem is formed by a few tangential bands of fibres alternating with bands of sieve elements and axial parenchyma. Formation of conspicuous sclereids and the dilatation growth (proliferation and enlargement of parenchyma cells) affect the bark structure. Fused phloem rays give rise …

In this study, the comparative wood anatomy of the European [Rhodothamnus chamaecistus (L.) Reichb.] and Anatolian (Rhodothamnus sessilifolius P.H.Davis) species of Rhodothamnus were studied. The wood anatomy of the taxa shows evidence of adaptation to growing in alpine habitats. The woods of the species exhibit primitive wood anatomical characteristics and share similar qualitative anatomical features. However, some of the quantitative anatomical characteristics of the taxa show significant differences, such as the distinctness of the growth ring and the bar number of the scalariform perforation plate. In this study, the bryophyte flora of Melendiz Mountain (Niğde Province) was investigated. In total, 99 taxa were found in this area. Of these, 4 taxa were liverworts and 95 taxa were mosses. According to Henderson's grid-square system, 39 moss taxa for the B8 square and 12 moss taxa for the C13 square are new records. Among them, Syntrichia caninervis Mitt. var. abranchesii (Luisier) R.H.Zander was recorded for the first time, and Cinclidotus pachylomoides Bizot and Orthotrichum sprucei Mont. were recorded for the second time in Turkey. Taxonomic Update Of Adenocalymma (Bignoniaceae): Emendations, New Synonyms, Typifications, And Status Change, Renata Udulutsch, Marco Antonio Assis, Pedro Dias

A recent taxonomic treatment of Adenocalymma resulted in nomenclatural changes associated with 47 names and 24 species. Seven emendations, 16 new synonyms, 29 typifications (24 of which are lectotypifications), 4 neotypifications, 1 epitypification, and 1 status change are proposed. Emendations are related primarily to the first description of the fruit of Adenocalymma dichilum, A. divaricatum, A. fruticosum, A. hypostictum, A. macrophyllum, A. salmoneum, and A. scabriusculum. A variety of Adenocalymma, A. marginatum var. apterospermum, has been raised to the rank of species (A. apterospermum).

Bellevalia malatyaensis Uzunh. & H.Duman is described and illustrated as a new species from East Anatolia. The distribution area of this species is restricted to Erkenek (Malatya)-Gölbaşı (Adıyaman). It grows in open areas of Pinus brutia Ten. forest. It resembles Bellevalia gracilis Feinbrun, but differs in scapose habitus, leaves, and characters of the capsule. The morphological diagnostic characters and karyological features are discussed.

This article investigates the seed exomorphic characteristics of 14 taxa of Lepidium L. in Brassicaceae by light microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The exomorphic characteristics of the seed are size, seed shape, seed colour, seed wings, and seed surface pattern. All characteristics of the seeds are described, illustrated, and compared in this article. The results of SEM at higher magnification showed 6 types of seed surface patterns: tuberculate, reticulate, ruminate, reticulate-tuberculate, reticulate-areolate, and reticulate-fovate. In these seed surface patterns, there were diagnostic characteristics and differences at the specific level for Lepidium.

Azadirachta indica A.Juss. and Melia azedarach L. are 2 closely related species from Meliaceae that are considered noteworthy medicinal plants in the world and have very often been confused with each other. Various evaluations like organoleptic and microscopic characteristics, preliminary phytochemical screening, and fluorescence analysis were carried out on the pulp, husk, leaves, and seeds of both plants in powdered form to establish appropriate data that can aid rapid and easy differentiation between them. The main aim of this study was to compare Grime's strategies in 91 plant taxa occurring from the eastern to the western part of the central Black Sea region of northern Turkey (Samsun). To do this, 45 sample plots were taken from different community types (from swamp forests to halophytic communities), and the strategies of plant species were compared with each other. Litter production and its decomposition is a major source of nutrients for mangrove ecosystems. This study was conducted on a naturally growing mangrove population in the Sandspit area in Karachi, Pakistan, during 2007 and 2008. Avicennia marina (Forssk.) Vierh. forms an almost pure population in Sandspit mangrove swamps. To examine the details of temporal fluctuation in litter accumulation and its decomposition, observations were taken at monthly intervals. In this study, we researched the main aquatic vegetation (AV) species and their orthophosphate and turbidity removal efficiencies in the Lower Kelkit Basin of Turkey. We chose an experimental area (1650 m^2) in the field and determined orthophosphate (mg/L) and turbidity (NTU) variables at the charging and discharging points between November 2005 and March 2006. The new species Inula tuzgoluensis M.Öztürk & O.Çetin (Asteraceae) is described from Central Turkey. The species grows on salty marshes, in the Cihanbeyli District of Konya Province. Inula tuzgoluensis, an endemic confined to Central Anatolia, is related to I. aucheriana DC. The new species is distinct from the closely allied I. aucheriana by habitus, indumentums, leaves, flowers, pollen grains, and achenes. Photos of the new species are provided. Special attention is also given to its ecology and conservation status. In addition, pollen characteristics and achene surface features are examined by scanning electron microscopy. Astragalus silifkeense Dinç, Aytaç & Doğu, sp. nov. (Fabaceae, sect. Astragalus Bunge) is described as a new species from Silifke (Mersin Province), in southern Anatolia, Turkey. The new species is closely related to A. columnaris Boiss., endemic to Denizli in western Anatolia, and A. gilvus Boiss. in Ankara Province, Turkey. Taxonomic descriptions, as well as pollen and seed characters of the new species, are presented. The new species grows in an open Abies cilicica (Antoine & Kotschy) Carrière forest. This work extends knowledge about the distribution of secretory structures (black nodules, translucent glands, and type A and B secretory canals) to other species of the genus Hypericum L., as only H. perforatum L. appears to have been widely investigated. Moreover, the current study was extended to include leaf vascular patterns. Wadi Al-Noman in Mecca is one of the most important wadis. It was included among the most important water sources where the springs and wells of Zobida run and it provides drinking water for the holy places in Mecca and visitors to the Kaaba and Arafat regions. The present study provides an analysis of floristic composition, vegetation types, and structure and species distribution at 20 sites, emphasising the environmental factors that affect species distribution.
