Herbaceous Plant Cover Establishment In A Barren Materials Quarry, Nikolaos Arambatzis, Kitikidou Kyriaki
Turkish Journal of Botany
The ability to establish cover using grass and legume species without any soil preparation was studied in a barren materials quarry. The biodiversity indexes (Simpson) during the growing season as well as the vegetation cover and composition were measured. The results showed that the established species had a satisfactory cover (up to 87.5%). This means that we can achieve significant soil rehabilitation after mining using herbaceous plant cover and reduce the cost of rehabilitation by cutting the expenses of soil preparation.

The Geophytic Flora Of Şanlıurfa Province, Turkey, İsmai̇l Eker, Mehmet Koyuncu, Hasan Akan

This study was carried out between 2001 and 2004 to determine the geophytic flora of Şanlıurfa, located within C6, C7, and C8 of the grid system in Turkey. In all, 789 plant specimens that consisted of 104 taxa belonging to 13 families and 30 genera were gathered from the investigation area. Of all the collected specimens, 19 taxa were new records for C6, C7, and C8, and 11 taxa were endemic to Turkey. Scilla mesopotamica Speta, which was first collected from Şanlıurfa-Halfeti in 1888 by Sintenis and was considered a missing species, was rediscovered after 116 years during this study. …

Minimal information exists on whole-plant dynamics of mineral flow through Arabidopsis thaliana or on the source tissues responsible for mineral export to developing seeds. Understanding these phenomena in a model plant could help in the development of nutritionally enhanced crop cultivars. A whole-plant partitioning study, using sequential harvests, was conducted to characterize growth and mineral concentrations and contents of rosettes, cauline leaves, stems, immature fruit, mature fruit hulls, and seeds of three WT lines (Col-0, Ler, and Cvi) and one mutant line (Col-0::ysl1ysl3). ‘Darrell’ (Reg. No. CV-1024, PI 644224) hard red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was developed by the South Dakota State University–Agricultural Experiment Station and released in 2006 to seed producers by the South Dakota State University–Agricultural Experiment Station and the University of Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station. Darrell was selected from the cross 2076-W12-11/‘Karl 92’ (PI 564245)//NE89526. NE89526 is an experimental line from the University of Nebraska with the pedigree ‘Lancota’ (CI 17389) selection/’Siouxland’ (PI 483469)//TX792729. 2076-W12-11 is an unreleased experimental line that originated from a population with an unidentified pedigree. Tribal people of the Northern Great Plains have utilized plants for centuries. Amelanchier anifolia (Juneberries/Serviceberries) historically played an important part in the diet and culture of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara (MHA) Tribal Nations. Research conducted as part of this study into historical and contemporary uses of the Juneberry by MHA Tribal Members indicated extensive historical use and a high interest in Juneberry reestablishment for cultural, nutritional, and economic reasons. The present study aimed to test the utility of RAPD (randomly amplified polymorphic DNA) and cpSSR (simple sequence repeats) markers for in situ gene conservation programs for fir species, as well as for determining the genetic similarities between the Abies nordmanniana Spach species complex (A. nordmanniana, A. bornmuelleriana Matff., A. equi-trojani (Asch. & Sint. ex Boiss) Mattf.) and between populations of A. equi-trojani, which is a narrow-endemic to Turkey. Studies On The Rhizosphere Mycoflora Of Mangroves, Marium Tariq, Shahnaz Dawar, Fatima S. Mehdi

Rhizosphere soil of mangrove plants (Avicennia marina, Rhizophora mucronata, Aegiceras corniculatum, and Ceriops tagal) was collected from coastal areas. Almost all samples showed a sandy to sandy loam texture. pH of the soil samples ranged from 7 to 10 and water content ranged from 8% to 9%. In all, 18 species of fungi belonging to 11 genera were isolated from the rhizosphere soil of all the mangrove species by direct plating method, whereas 20 fungal species belonging to 11 genera were isolated by serial dilution. In this study, comparative morphological, anatomical and palynological studies of Stachys L. sect. Ambleia Bentham species (Lamiaceae) in Turkey are carried out on the plants collected from their type localities. These species are Stachys cydni Kotschy ex Gemici & Leblebici and S. yildirimlii M. Dinç, which are highly local endemics. Morphologically, micromorphological features of the trichomes are studied. Trichome morphology appears to have a taxonomic value with respect to the results. The aim of this study was to determine how carbon (C) mineralization of carob (Ceratonia siliqua L., Fabaceae) soils are affected by different temperatures (23 °C and 28 °C) and humidity [field capacity (FC), 80% and 60% of their field capacity] conditions in the laboratory. The carob soils were taken from Çukurova University campus in the eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey. C mineralization of all soils was determined using CO_{2} respiration method. Plants have evolved mechanisms to avoid and repair UV radiation damage; it is not surprising that photomorphogenic responses to UV-B and UV-C are often assumed to be adaptations to harmful radiation. Free radicals generated by UV are likely to be involved in the induction of antioxidant defence system. In this study plants were grown for 5 weeks in controlled conditions. Plants were grown in vermiculite medium before applying the UV treatments, and irrigated daily by Hoagland solution for 5 weeks. Vascular Flora Of Forest Vegetation In Altındere Valley (Maçka-Trabzon), Alper Uzun, Sali̇h Terzi̇oğlu

The vascular flora of forest vegetation in Altındere Valley (Maçka-Trabzon) was investigated. The study was conducted between 2001 and 2002, during which time 1200 plant samples were collected. In all, 383 vascular taxa belonging to 246 genera and 84 families were identified. The richest family was Asteraceae (35, 9.1%), followed by Lamiaceae (27, 7.0%) and Fabaceae (23, 6.0%). Additionally, the richest genus was Campanula L. (7, 1.82%), followed by Trifolium L. (6, 1.56%) and Acer L. (6, 1.56%). The phytogeographical regions of 209 (54.56%) taxa were determined. Background concentrations of the heavy metals Mn, Ni, Cd, Co, Zn, Cu, and Pb in the soils and plant monitors of the Boatin Reserve were determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). Surface soil layers of the Boatin Reserve were polluted with Cu, as its concentration exceeded both the national legal standards and the content of Cu in non-polluted areas. Analysis of heavy metals accumulation in all studied plant monitors indicated that the content of Cu, Pb, and Zn exceeded their concentration in non-polluted areas. Induction Of Embryogenic Tissue From Immature Zygotic Embryos In Pinus Nigra J.F.Arnold Subsp. Nigra Var. Caramanica (Loudon) Businsky, Zeynep Özkurt, Tolga Yildirim, Sertaç Önde, Zeki̇ Kaya

Embryogenic cultures (EC) of Anatolian black pine (Pinus nigra J.F.Arnold subsp. nigra var. caramanica (Loudon) Businsky) were initiated from immature pre-cotyledonary zygotic embryos sampled weekly from 16 different trees in 2 consecutive years. Douglas-fir cotyledon revised (DCR) medium supplemented with 13.6 µM of 2,4-D and 2.2 µM of BAP was used for initiation and maintenance of EC. Overall initiation frequencies of EC in the study were 0.92% in 2004 and 1.96% in 2005; tree values ranged from 0.0% to 7.32%. Overall, 0.38% and 0.62% of the initial explants were converted into established cell lines in 2004 and 2005, respectively.

The present study involves the flora of Balıkdamı Wetland and its surroundings in Sivrihisar, Eskişehir, Turkey. This 2-year study (2002-2003) examined the plant samples collected in this region and determined that there are 51 families, as well as 250 taxa belonging to 173 genera (247 species, 1 subspecies, and 2 varieties). All of these taxa belong to the Angiosperms (201 Dicotyledons, 49 Monocotyledons) subdivision. The largest families are Brassicaceae (31), Poaceae (29), and Fabaceae (25) in terms of the number of species and subspecies included. This study was carried out to determine the flora of the area between Üzümlü and Sakaltutan (Erzincan-Gümüşhane). In this research, conducted between 2001 and 2006, 5210 plant specimens were collected from the research area, and 960 taxa (at specific and intraspecific ranks) belonging to 344 genera and 73 families were reported. The large families are Asteraceae (152 taxa), Brassicaceae (78 taxa), Fabaceae (73 taxa), Caryophyllaceae (64 taxa), and Lamiaceae (62 taxa). The large genera are Astragalus L. (30), Silene L. A check-list of the genus Biarum Schott in the Flora of Turkey is presented, with 10 taxa, of which 2 are endemic to Turkey. A list of taxonomical changes that have occurred since the publication of the Flora of Turkey, Supplement II is given. In addition, Biarum syriacum (Spreng.) H.Riedl is recorded for the first time (C6 Gaziantep) from Turkey. In this paper an expanded morphological description of this species is provided. Moreover, an image of a type specimen, a photograph of a plant from the field, an illustration of a plant, and a distribution map are presented.

This study presents the taxonomy and threatened categories of 3 Achillea L. (Asteraceae-Anthemideae) species: A. membranacea (Labill.) DC., A. brachyphylla Boiss. & Hausskn., and A. boissieri Hausskn. ex Boiss. These species belong to sect. Babounya (DC.) O.Hoffm. and were previously placed in the data deficient (DD) category in the Red Data Book of Turkish Plants. Descriptions, localities, distribution map, and images of the species are given. Threatened categories of the species were determined as A. membranacea in VU, and A. brachyphylla and A. boissieri in EN.

The major source of environmental lead (Pb) is the combustion of leaded gasoline. After emission as exhaust, lead in the air falls to earth and contaminates soil and plants. In the present investigation, the effect of maleic hydrazide (MH) has been studied on seed germination, mitosis, and pollen fertility of Trigonella foenum-graecum L. to test its cytotoxicity. Six different concentrations (0.01%, 0.02%, 0.03% 0.04%, 0.05%, and 0.06%) of maleic hydrazide (MH) were given at seed level. The abnormalities noticed were both physiological and clastogenic. Fragments, stickiness of chromosomes, univalents, multivalents, and anaphase bridges were the most frequent abnormalities. The decrease in seed germination and pollen fertility was found significant at 0.05 level. Anatomical Findings Of The Genus Galium L. (Rubiacaeae) In Egypt And Their Systematic Implications, Kadry N. Abdel-Khalik, Monier M. Abd El-Ghani, Ahmed A. Elkordy

Transverse stem sections of 11 species and 2 subspecies of the genus Galium L. from Egypt were studied by light microscopy. Epidermal cell shape, cortex, xylem, and pith were of good taxonomic value between the taxa. Four types of stem shape were discerned in the transverse sections. The shape of epidermal cells can be used to distinguish between subspecies of Galium setaceum Lam. The cortex varied in size from wide to very narrow. The pith was wide or narrow, and solid or hollow, and was useful for classifying species into groups. A key for the identification of the investigated taxa …

Verbascum samniticum Ten. (Scrophulariaceae) is recorded for the first time for the flora of Turkey with the specimen collected from A1(E) Kırklareli. A description of the species and descriptive illustrations are given based on the collected specimen. Its relationship with V. phlomoides L. is discussed.

Biogeography Of South-West Asian Bryophytes – With Special Emphasis On The Tropical Element, Harald Kürschner

The recent bryophyte flora of South-West Asia is heterogeneous and consists of 6 floral elements [(Sub)cosmopolitan taxa, northern taxa, xerotherm-Pangaean taxa, circum-Tethyan taxa, tropical taxa, and endemics of various origins] that are derived from the different Pangaean ancestral floral stocks. Analysis of the flora and vegetation indicates that there is a very strong tropical - and especially palaeotropical and Afromontane - influence in the bryophyte flora of the area. Altogether, more than 95 taxa, or nearly 10% of South-West Asia´s total known bryoflora, are of xero-tropical origin.
